Marty Morrissey comment on Cork

Good old Marty was showing yet again that he knows nothing about the game when commenting on Cork Kerry game.

Not a Cork or Kerry man myself but the comment he made about Cork football was hilarious. At one stage in the second half Cork where passing the ball very effectively around their 22 area and it was a joy the watch.

They were setting up a play and passing it beautifully. Then a though ball to one of the forwards for a point. Marty says nobody like this type of football. This is not enjoyable. What does he want them to do? Just pump it up field and hope some lad gets on the end of it??

A team tries to develop their game a bit and all he can think about it throwing a boot on it. When the ball is passed around skillfully like that passage of play its a joy the watch. What a idiot!!

Did anyone else notice this? and What is your opinion on it? another overpaid Rte head who hasnt a clue? i.e Hamilton on rugby etc

I wouldnt take a whole lot of notice to anything Marty says but in fairness at one stage Cork handpassed the ball across their own goal 9 times without leaving their 45. It mightnt have been as obvious watching it on TV but the Cork fans around me were disgusted by it.

Cork had the lions share of possesion around the middle and still refused to kick it in, im not talking about hoofing it in as the OP suggested but playing it in low to the 2 man full forward line we had up there.
Kerrigan got a few balls and did very well but how many did Goulding get? i can only remember one in the first half and he turned and got a score of it.

Sounds like the same passage of play Marty was speaking about. Was in the 2nd half. In fairness, a score did eventually come from it but I think the point Marty was trying to make was that it was frustrating to watch - I don't think he was commenting on how effective a tactic it was. Indeed, I was watching on TV and the two other people in the room mentioned it at the same time as well..

I'm fairly sure Cork were passing it about well into thir own half when Marty started his comments on this, someone watching the game with me was saying the same just as Marty said it.

The only quote I remember from Marty was at the end of the match when he said "Cork and Kerry must do it all over again next weekend in Pairc Ui Chaoimh.......... when and where we don't know yet"

Ah have say even as Corkman Marty was right on this one. Now I remember i think it was Kissane who broke through for point but still Cork were asking for trouble at one stage and inviting Kerry onto them.

And how do you suggest the Cork center back line pass the ball low into their full forward when Kerry had 12 men behind the ball for the majority of the game?

I watched the game from behind the Kerry goal in the second half and while Kerry did 'pack' the defence, had we driven the ball into the corners sooner, there was plenty of room for Goulding and Kerrigan to run into. Unfortunately with every handpass the half back line of Kerry were getting closer to their goal thus cutting off the pass.
While this type of possesion football limits the opportunities that Gouch and Donahy will get , it also limits the opportunties of our corner forwards. When we did break through we simply had the wrong men taking the shots at goal - thus no green flags.
I like the posession game but on a limited basis, not every fúcking time. Good fast ball and Kerrigan and Goulding will have a field day, á la last years replay, bring it on!!

High balls don't suit Kerrigan or Goulding - they need low, accurate ball, and that needs to be given further up the pitch.

Incorrect! There was plenty of room in front of both corners for a ball to be pumped in. They would not be jumping for it - the ball would have bounced once or even twice given that they would have started their runs from the 13yard line.
Time and time again they went to go ..... then stopped..... went to go ..... then stopped then came all the way back to between the 13 and 21. It must be so frustrating especially when you think Kerrigan managed to score 3 points from 'jack' posession!!

You're fiercely unhappy with the half forwards tracking their men back! Two threads you're on about it.:pac:

Once again though, kicking long ball from your half back line into the full-forward line is more often not inaccurate.

At one stage Marty refers to Gooch and Donaghy as the "Dynamic Duo"

He didn't say who was Batman and who was Robin.

I was making this very point to my boss at work during the week. Cork struggle when teams drop deeper and put men behind the ball....even though Walsh and O'Connor won midfield on Sunday, the Kerry half forwards dropped deeper as the game went on, limiting the supply of ball that went into the Corks full forward line, Kerrigan and Donncha O'Connor were starved of possession for the last fifteen minutes. Limerick used the same tactic last year too in the final to good effect.

I heard that this could be Micheál O' Muircheartaigh's last year as a commentator. Marty Morrissey or Brian Carthy and a few others are nowhere close to his level of ability. Radio commentary will never be the same. As the person that told me of the imminent retirement said of Brian Carthy, he doesn't really describe the play. He'll tell you that there was a score, but not the detail on exactly how it happened, which is a vital component of radio commentary.

+1.. Ger Canning used to be very enthusiastic and great to listen to but is painfully slow and disinterested at the moment (doing soccer matches I think affected him abit)...

Darragh Moloney I think is the best of the lot...Marty is just BRUTAL...

Micheál will be sadly missed,a legend and an absolute gentlemanicon14.gif

he's right though, it is horrible to watch. Passing the ball backwards inside your own half should be banned.

i dont get why brian carthy is disliked so much, i think he has a wonderfully unique voice and much prefer listening to him than canning, morrissey et al.

i really cant bear morrissey at all, even if i agree completely with what he is saying that annoying voice and the image of that silly grin on his face drives me mad
