Will be in Cork Saturday, plan to head out and try Galtymore and Galtybeg. Will presumably be turning off main road near Skehinarinky. Is there any neat circuit from that side that would take in Galtymore, Galtybeg, and any other peaks in 4-5 hours or so? Not looking for a trail necessarily, was really trying to get those 2 and maybe bag a few more, time permitting.

4-5 hours will let you take in Galtybeg (799m), Galtymore(919m), Slievecushnabinnia (766m) and probably Carrignabinnia (822m), and return back the path you came to the carpark.

Galtymore & Galtybeg can be 3.5-4 hour round trip on there own though depending on weather and such.

Yea take the left on the road after Skeheenarinky, and follow until you come to a carpark. Access is up the lane through 2 gates and follow the path to the base of Galtybeg.

    Thanks for that.

I googled and see getting to the north side isn't that difficult. And found a walk described here...

Which is better or are they much of a muchness?

well the north approach is tougher, you climb all of Galtymore in one go (which is steep enough) as opposed to gaining some height by walking towards it from the south side.

It's a nice circuit though, and should take up to 5.5/6 hours. I personally prefer the south approach.

Thanks for the pointers. Went on Saturday. Managed to find the car park that they have hidden away in the woods. Found a trail which came to a dead end and had to battle through thick forest for a few minutes, which was frustrating. Finally got through that, and got on the mountains. Found the trail leading from Knockeenatoung and went up Galtybeg and then on to Galtymore. Bit misty on the summits and between the two, but when the cloud rolled back the views were lovely. Was with a woman in runners, so going was slower than had hoped, and didn't make it to Slievecushnabinnia. Coming down was a bit tricky too, needed to cross a couple of fences with barbed wire.

Sorry to jump in on an existing thread but thinking of doing the Gus Tobin Galtee Walk in June. Just to see what the ground is like on the Galtees - done the Mourne Wall Walk recently and wore my trail-runners but not sure how practical this would be on the Galtees..

from the south it's a rocky pathway, then grassy land which can get marshy/boggy at places. never worn trail runners so couldn't say for sure.

Cheers... That's the 'tourist route' I take it?
Might chance the trail runners - don't fancy covering too much ground in boots if it stays warm.

yea it would be the most popular route up, although I'm not sure if your walk is using that route?
