Hi, i am thinking of disconnecting my UPC service. Bill is 68 quid a month (sports included) but it is 2 much. I was wondering is there a disconnection fee with UPC because it wouldnt surprise me if there was. Ive heard 100 euro being mentioned whcih is crazy stuff. If there is a fee is there a way around it? Also would people recommend sky ahead of UPC? I prob will get sports in again in August but at the end of the day i just want value for value and i just think UPC are a crowd of cowboys trying 2 screw over customers as many times as possible. Thanks in advance

It is down to the terms and conditions of your contract. I am just coming to the end of a contract with them and as far as I am aware they charge cancellation fees if you cancel the service whilst in contract (contracts are usually 12 months but if you change package that may start a new contract period). If you are not in contract you can cancel without penalty but still have to give a months notice in writing to a particular address (which I had to ring up to get as they don't make it easy to find on their website).

Basically it is down to the rules you signed up to when you joined.

My only experience of Sky is that when we enquired a couple of years ago the sales agent on the phone would not give any information about packages or discuss anything until we had given our direct debit details first. Being suspicious of that my wife ended the call - more politely than I would have done!

I was on their standard package that was over 30 a month but rang up and swapped to their basic one which is 20ish euro a month has all the normal channels you want RTE BBC Channel 4 etc all i lost was national geographic and the history channel. I have a second box upstairs that i got for 8ish euro a month. When i rang to cancel recently they offered to bring the bill down from just over 28 euro to 20.

May be worth trying that. World cup is on BBC and ITV all summer anyway so no need for sky sports.

Both UPC and Sky charge an early disconnection fee for cancelations within the first 12 months of the contract, after that there's no fee. Both companies also charge an administration fee for downgrades.

If you do a search of past posts on Boards you'll find some people have the same (and worse) opinion of Sky as you do of UPC, just like you'll find others agreeing with you.

€15 plus settlement on any outstanding monthly subscription to the extra packages.

A €15 Downgrade Administration Fee will be applied anytime you downgrade any element of your service.

Its sickening having to pay the disconnection fee, same thing happens with us every year in college, 9 months in (Sept - May) and then have to cancel when we all move home!

If you don't like it, don't et their service. Terminate within contract duration will cost you in any service area.

I certainly would, especially if you have Sky Sports. Sky might work out more expensive, but its worth it if only for Sky Sports HD and the extra HD channels.

Also when going from being used to a Sky box (which I was used to in my old house) to the Chorus Digital HD thingy its like going from a Core2Duo to a Spectrum ZX81 (no disrespect to the Spectrum; the ZX81 is probably a better piece of kit than the Chorus box)... The Chorus box is so slow and unresponsive its a joke.

Chorus does the job if you have no alternative (as I dont living in an apartment building) but why anyone who could have Sky would choose Chorus for their tv is beyond me.

So just to get this straight.

You signed into a contract with them and are now cancelling.
You heard from someone (Presumably not within Upc) there is a disconnection fee and based on this unconfirmed information you are branding them a group of cowboys.

Why do people automatically think that if a company tried to charge a cancel fee because a customer wants to close an a/c within the contract period, they are scammers/cowboys/trying to screw you. Read your terms and conditions before signing up. Its not the companys fault you didn't.

That is true. They just require 31 days notice. So while they do not charge a downgrade fee, I would rather pay 15 quid over what ever sports or movies costs a month.

Hello. If with upc for 5 years - and now want to downgrade from Broadband & TV to just Broadband, is the downgrade fee just €15?

Can this be done just by ringing them or does this have to be put in writing too?

No d/g fee is you are cancelling TV but there is a stand alone fee then for your broadband example if you have 15mb at 32e a month it will now be 39.74e pm, plus you must give 30 days notice in writing to cancel TV

Can you not just ring them? EMails tend to get ignored by most companies.

I would be very surprised if their email cancellations department ignored cancellation requests.

For support, they used to have a notice saying they didn't respond to email, you could only contact them via the phone or a letter. I used to wonder at an ISP that didn't respond to email. They've changed that at least.

I think theres a note on the back of the bill saying how to cancel it. I though it had to be by letter.

Downgrade 'administration fee' for tapping a few keys on a keyboard ?. I think it's an absolute disgrace that any company can add on these nonsense fees.

I know it's easy to joke about them but I've found their customer services section has improved a lot over the last couple of years. I've found them good to deal with recently.
