Sticking Brakes

I have an old beetle 1303, Im not sure if its disks or drums, but for some reason its making a noise recently.

Its like a rubbing noise and coming from the front left wheel, I think it might be a sticking brake. Ill take the wheel of tomorrow and see.

Is this called a sticking caliper? or something else.
Can it be fixed or does it need replaced?

    Thanks.

A 1303 should have front discs on it. Could be the caliper siezed alright from lack of use maybe? Jack it up and see does the wheel spin freely. If its not the calipers will need to be freed out.

a rebuild kit should be available from eirespares or otto someone like that for the caliper

not necessarily, unless it's a 1303S it will have drums.

If it has disks on front and one of them is sticking then the caliper will have to be removed, stripped and rebuilt. If the seals have split then corrosion can take root on the caliper pistons and cause them to stick. New calipers are cheap too, maybe even cheaper than the parts and labour involved in rebuilding your old ones.

If it's drums (front or rear) then they'll need to be opened up to check for wear and/or sticking pistons in the wheel cylinders, as above. Again, new wheel cylinders are certainly cheaper than the labour involved in repairing an old one.

Might also be an internally collapsed flexi-hose - they can break down inside and act as a one way valve when the brakes are applied.

No harm to do an overhaul on the brakes if any aspect of them are showing signs of age - parts are cheap enough from Otto, especially if you're a www.eircooled.com member....

Edit: jack it up and spin the wheel - see if there's any noise and resistance. Then (and only then) apply the brakes and spin the wheel again. If the wheel spins freely before and not after the brakes are applied, then its the brakes. Otherwise consider wheel bearings, speedo cable (if its the front left) etc.

Hey, I was coming down the M50 and the noise was terrible when It started... it was like d,d,d,d,d,d,d,,d,d,d,d,d,deeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, BANG............. hahah

Was really scary as I thought the wheel was going to come off, so got back to Blanch and contemplated how I was going to get it fixed as 4 of us were going to Dingle in it and it needed to be fixed (I wasnt travelling in a kia picanto)...

Decided to text the saint of beetles, in Celbridge.. His name is ben (have his number if anyone wants), so i text him 4 letters! HELP.... he text back saying "whats wrong hahah"?

I asked could i come over 6pm on sunday eve, and could a beetle drive on 3 wheels cause I was sure one was going to pop off!

I checked the bolts were tight before setting off again, and hobbled my way over..

15 mins past, and Ben, came out of the garage where I sat in a fully restored beetle thinking, hmmmm ( is there a classic scrappage scheme - Joking)...

Right! he said, the nut holding the handbreak cable on to the drum on the rear left snapped off, its just wear and tear and ive replaced the nut and a wee spring in the drum..

Oh jesus, what next, drop me off at anglo irish while I die along with all their debt, as I thought of how much it was all going to cost.

    7 EURO.................hahhahahhahahahhahahah Cool!

Owning a Classic car is cheap cheap cheap!

(Had that been kia, I would have had to wait 2 weeks for the part and pay 200euro for a full new hub)
