If someone changes their name by deed poll and they are named as a beneficiary on a will by their previous name can they still claim their inheritance?

I imagine yes. While deed poll is rather deliberate, many people change their names through marriage or through common usage.

Should an inheritance to "My friend Pat Brown" be denied because he is properly known as Patrick Brown?

It may become problematic where the identity is ambiguous, e.g. the deceased has a neighbour Patricia Brown.

Like victor said no problems unless there is ambiguity as to who beneficiary is, in which case the executor should apply to the probate court for directions.
