Unusual dental reappointment

Firstly, my dentist is fairly sound and I have been going to him for about 10 years, only down side there is normally at least a 4 week waiting period.
I rang 5 weeks ago and explained to the receptionist that my filling has broke
and I'd like to make an appointment and today was the day of the appointment.
I had to wait 5 weeks for the appointment take time off of work and drive in to town.So now I am in the chair, dentist asks whats the story I tell him he takes a look and says yes tooth needs to be filled and while he has me he will take a look at the other teeth. He then says other teeth are fine and to make an appointment for after christmas for the filling.I explain that I have been waiting
5 weeks for this appointment, he says well today was really only for a checkup,
I did not want to get in to an arguement with him so I said it to the receptionist in passing who said he is very busy.Anyway it turns out that I have to wait another 4 weeks for an appointment,9 weeks total and take more time off of work.Is this normal run of the mill stuff or should I take my business elsewhere.

Now that I think of it I had to get a filling before after waiting 3 weeks,he said he could only give me a temp filling which lasted about 10 days and that I would have to call back in 4 weeks for the proper job.7 weeks all together.

it's likely to be his routine. some dentists do it all the time, where they check what needs to be done, and do the work on subsequent visits. in his defense, if he is busy and you were scheduled for a check-up (mistaken or not) then he's unlikely to spend the extra time doing the filling, just to keep the day going on time.
on the other hand, some dentists like to do work there and then, and don't worry about running late. like me.

I agree with Ballsy ( mainly because I like his sense of humour :D) but I would like to add that in 35 years of practice I have never been booked up more than a few days ahead, and I've always been quite busy.

People with problems ( pain, broken teeth, etc) always get moved to the top of the queue. I fire my receptionest for only one reason, and that is if she turns a patient in pain away. I have not had to fire anybody- but it was always clearly understood that we were in the toothache business.

So having said that, to answer the OP question, I generally don't do the filling or whatever treatment the first day. I just do an exam and treatment plan and then rebook for what is needed. I make exceptions if people have issues with work or distance etc but that is rare enough. BUT.... making a guy wait weeks on end? I just don't understand it.
