Starts 8th of February and runs until the 12th.

No, not a bad idea to miss Paddy's day. It's celebrated worldwide anyway :D

I missed Rag week last year, as I was away.

Does much happen in terms of lectures during this week, or is it generally accepted that students are going to be on the tear and ignoring lectures?

If so, I'll happily treat is as a holiday week on the continent.

Lectures proceed as normal. If someone doesn't show up, that's their prerogative.

interesting use of the word prerogative

There's a rumour going around that the Battle of the DJs will not be held in the old bar this year, Can anyone confirm this? IMO the BoD IS rag week, if they mess with that all we'll have left is student union types running around with buckets and spoofing about how drunk they were the previous night, shame on you student union types

Firstly, as far as I know it hasnt been officially decided yet, but its unlikely that the battle of the DJ's will indeed be taking place this year in the old bar alright. The reason for this is that least year as you may or not know there was a lot of trouble on the Monday alone of rag week specifically with this event, the security in the bar wasnt suitable, and in short, a lot of things happened there that shouldnt have, and people left in the afternoon and caused mayhem on college road. A couple of weeks after last years rag week, the university, guards, and students union all met to agree guidelines for future rag weeks so that this doesnt happen again, and they included taking the focus off alcohol, renaming the week to its full name of Raise and Give week, and stopping the battle of the DJ's event in the old bar. The alternative to this was cancelling the week altogether, like what happened in Galway last year.

So this year we'll be following the guidelines and trying to provide sufficient entertainment and fun during the week that doesnt involve drinking all day long (surprising as it may be to you, this is possible). There'll also be a much bigger focus on the charity side of things, and we'll be reminding people that this actually is what Rag week is about, rasing money for charity and having fun, not spending the day in the old bar getting pissed each day. Your attitude that the battle of the DJ's is rag week shows is one we'll be trying to change. And yes, shame on us "type" for trying to put charities before students getting drunk.

Depend on your lecturers. When I was in BIS Kieran Murphy gave 5% to the 15 people who showed up to the 9am Thursday lecture on rag week without any warning

Hes also been lobbying to move it to during the holidays, the man has no soul!

That's why your sponsered by Gorbys

On a serious note, fair play for putting in the effort

I've gone to 4 battles of the DJs in the Old Bar and I can HONSESTLY say that last years few days were the most timid I've ever seen. Two years ago the DJsoc won Rag society of the week or something like that.

CIT pushed their Christmas Day celebrations off campus and look at the result, absolute mayhem in Bishopstoen, the college name being dragged through the dirt and the loss of earmning potential for the college on the day

I hope it goes ahead, it's my last year in ucc

RAG week last year got a bit out of hand, but if people can just act like humans instead of animals and handle their drink in a reponsible way then its great craic and not this demonised week people make it out to be.

oh and from what i heard last year, I dont have exact figures or anything, but i believe they made a bundle for charity. Apparently it was one of the best RAG weeks in terms of rasining money. Sure, if people have fun at the same time than whats the problem?
