I have recently started back college in IT Carlow doing a degree in
Computer Systems Management and am in the 2nd year.I got into 2nd year
because I finished 1 year of a similar course down in WIT in 2004-05
but had to pull out of that course at the time due to illness at the
time.A few months back I was in with FAS and they got me in touch with
the college to go in and see if I would be allowed to re enter in the
2nd year and after an interview with one of the lecturers they told me
that i would be accepted into 2nd year .I have been on jobseekers
allowence for the last year and a half and when I got the chance to go
back said I would. As I was on jobseekers allowence for 18 months I
thought I would be entitled to the BETA but got a letter last Friday
saying that since I am in 2nd year and not starting off the course Im
not going to get the BETA and since I am in full time education I am
not allowed jobseekers allowence because Im not seeking work. Also they
say that I owe them 1600 euro because I have been claiming jobseekers
since September and even tho I only started college on the 1st of
October myself they are still looking for money back from the 14th of
September as this was the date the college re opened. Im really
frustrated that in this time of resession the system is pushing people
like me back out of college instead of trying to re educate and
upskill us and sending us back to the dole queue again because I
simply cannot survive on fresh air until I am finished my degree.

you need to get some formal advice and opinions on this. if i were you, i would contact the social welfare department, arrange an interview and discuss the entire situation in front of someone other than the front desk official's.
id also suggest you contact your local TD and get some advice off of them.
