Why aren't there 4 places paying each way in the Arc? I'm pretty sure it's only handicaps the pay 4 places or more but should it not be the same in stakes races?

its a good question but in a handicap all horses are weighted to
have a chance and the cambridgeshire today is a good example
Results Name Racecard No. Jockey SP
    1st Supaseus (9) T Block 16/1
    2nd Tartan Gigha (25) J Fanning 33/1
    3rd Nanton (6) D Tudhope 33/1
    4th Applause (2JF) (31) William Buick 10/1
    5th Shavansky (35) Kirsty Milczarek 100/1
All horses in a handicap are weighted to have a chance of
    winning
whereas in a stakes race all horses are running off level
weights so a no hoper really has no chance and often in
these top races like the derby and arc etc etc
horses at 100/1 and the likes are often only put
in as pacemakers to help their more fancied stablemates.
take the arc for example tomorrow
outside the top ten in the betting for 2moros arc its 100/1 bar
its nearly impossible for any of these horses to win it
yet alone be placed so really its a 10 horse races
The bookies will never offer four places for races like
the derby, king george or the arc given how unlikely
it is that the top 16 in these races will realistically
have a chance of winning or being in the first four.
maybe in the likes of the guineas it should be different and maybe
they should there (if they dont already but i dont thing they do) as its
a wide open race compared to the other classics as a lot of horses
in the guineas wont have run since their 2year old days so its impossible
to know how a horse has progressed from 2-3
