Satellite Broadband - equipment compatability

    Hiya,

    Quick question:

Will the satellite broadband equipment I have for ABB/NBB work for digiweb? I know the alignment would need to change, but is the modem and dish ok?

Just looking at options for changing without having a large equipment outlay...

    Thanks

    NO.

The NBB gear is Astra2Connect only.
    • The ODU is very cheap low Power, 0.5W, Professional ODU gear is 1W to 4W (the block on arm)
    • It's just a TV quality dish, won't take professional ODU, will take a standard LNB for TV.
    • The Modem is built down to a price and only works with the Astra2Connect Service's Hub.

The two coax cables will work if proper quality was used.

There are basically the following INCOMPATIBLE systems. These all need different modems and in many cases different ODU.
    1. Pre 2009 iDirect (DVB-s type)
    2. Later iDirect (DVB-s2 type)
    3. Certain Hughes systems are not DVB-RCS on Transmit
    4. Astra2Connect /Newtec (dish /ODU mount also incompatible with all others)
    5. DVB-s with DVB-RCS
    6. DVB-s2 with DVB-RCS
    7. DVB-s2 with DOCSIS Ku band
    8. DVB-s2 with DOCSIS Ka band (different dish/ODU system)

All are in use in Ireland except (8) which is next year.
Some satellites need 1m dish to 2m dish depending on location in Ireland.
All generally need larger dish higher speed, especially higher upload Speed.
The Astra2Connect is most limited in upload speed.

While the Digiweb gear is more expensive it's actually more subsidized than the Astra2Connect which is an amazingly cheap system.

When I was first installing ISDN for dedicated Internet use a VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) satellite system was about €10,000

All the systems above are VSATs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VSAT

The ODU (out door Unit) is a BUC (Block upconverter , the transmitter) and LNB (Low-noise block converter, the Receiver) combined to a single horn using a Orthomode transducer. The Astra2Connect is an all in one ODU, which makes it very cheap, but also very low power, thus slow for upload.

If you use the Modem RX cable on a Satellite Receiver or Sky Digibox and align the Astra2Connect dish you can get all the free channels at 28.2 (BBC, ITV, c4 etc). Just leave the TX coax unpluged and put a way the modem in case the agents of NBB liquidator come looking for it.
