Uyuni to Rio De Janeiro

Sorry moderators if this seems like a duplicate thread, but it's actually two different questions!

Ok, so we're gonna do the Salt Plains in Uyuni and then our next stop is gonna be Rio De Janeiro in Brazil... At this point I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to do this!

Our very loose itinerary for the remainder of S. America is:
    • Uyuni to Rio
    • Rio to Iguassu
    • Iguassu to Montevideo
    • Montevideo to Buenes Aires
    • Buenes Aires to Mendoza
    • Mendoza to Santiago
I'm trying to figure out how to get from Bolivia to Rio without backtracking. Anyone done this? Flights seem to be out of our financial league, so overland would be perfect.

I initially thought of going Uyuni to Santa Cruz and Santa Cruz to Rio. There's a train or something that goes to Corumba, then try to figure out how to get from Corumba to Rio...

But that doesn't really work out from what i've heard.

Other option we were thinking was Uyuni to Salta and then across to Iguassu Falls and then onto Rio. Then Rio direct to Montevideo (if that's even possible?!)

    HELP!!!

we went from Uyuni to San Pedro de Atacama in Chile. stayed there a few days (which i'd recommend for sand boarding etc.). then we got a bus from SanPedro to San Tiago down the length of Chile and got a flight from there to Rio.. The flight was a couple of hundred dollars but money well spent.

Yeah I'd love to be able to get to San Pedro... Isn''t San Pedro to Santiago a huge bus journey though??

A little help with airlines... the cheapest i can find at the mo is $500 pp and that's WAY out of my league...

Is there a bus you can get from somewhere like Salta to Iguassu maybe?

It would make more sense to go Uyuni - Iguazu - Rio - Montivdeo.

    Otherwise you're slightly backtracking.

Here's how long it would take to go from Uyuni to Iguazu:

Uyuni - Villazon (train, 11 hours) *note: this train does not go every day*

Villazon - Salta (bus, 4 hours)

Salta - Iguazu (bus, 24 hours)

Edit: Just found the timetables for the train here: http://www.boliviahostels.com/howtoget/tren.php

Thanks for that info. Yeah, the reason I started this thread is to find an alternative to travelling to Santa Cruz and across... That sounds good except for the 11 hour train to Vilazon. Ugh. Do all the trains in Bolivia go at walking speed??? Is it definitely doable to get from Rio to Montevideo skipping Iguassu?

Was just talking with some Bolivians in our hostel and they suggested coming back from Uyuni to La Paz then getting a bus to Santa Cruz, then train to the border then bus to Rio...

Anyone with info on that? Basically, whichever works out at less travelling time wins for me! Unfortunately my wallet doesn't expand to a flight... :(
