appaerently you download it via the apple menu and update - but its not there

when i try to install an app it says you have java 1.5.x and you need java 1.6

so i went to the apple site and tried several updates that had java 1.6 - yet i still have 1.5.x

has anyone any solutions, please, or a site to download it for 10.5.7

thanks for any responses and help

Go to Utilities>Java>Java Preferences

In the "General" tab can you see "Java SE 6" in the "Java applications versions" section?

I've been installing all updates religiously and I'm still on 1.5:
java -version
java version "1.5.0_16"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_16-b06-284)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_16-133, mixed mode, sharing)

Check the downloads available from Apple's site, including here:
Java for Mac OS X 10.5, Update 1 57MB 2008-04-29
Java for Mac OS X 10.5, Update 1 adds Java SE 6 version 1.6.0_05 to 64-bit Intel Macs.

ah

java doesnt automaticaly use the newest instaled version, you have to do that manualy via the java prefrences after you upgrade it

strange thing to do, if people update they obviously want to use it - should be automatic like nearly everything else

thanks all!

If you have an Intel Mac with the latest software updates, Java 6 is most likely already installed on your Mac, just not enabled.* To set it as the default:

Open Java Preferences in Applications -> Utilities -> Java
drag ‘Java SE 6.0′ to the top of each table shown (see image below).* That’s it!
Of note, Apple has only release Java SE 6.0 for 64 bit Intel Macs.* So if you have a Core Duo Mac or earlier (inlcuding PowerPC), you are stuck with Java SE 5.0 and earlier and should not upgrade to the latest version of JSMS. You should only use JSMS version 4.1.2

Version 4.1.4 will work with Tiger (older Java)

http://downloads.sourceforge.net/jsmsirl/JSMS-4.1.4-mac-os-installer.zip

It will also work on older Power PC Macs.

Note: You should disable automatic updates in JSMS preferences after installing the older version. If it says an update has been downloaded, go to the JSMS install folder and delete the file 'updateArchive.zip' to prevent the update getting installed.
