    Hi,

I'm in wexford and my internet access currently is through my meteor mobile and €1 a day/50 megabyte cap, this is through EDGE GPRS..

Now, if I get the USB modem Meteor are doing at the moment, can I still use EDGE until they roll out GPRS in my area?

    Or will i get nothing..?

    Thanks
(its either meteor or 3.. do o2 do pay as you go broadband? dont want to sign up to a contract..)

    Forget GSM/GPRS, it's only 20k to 70k

    GSM/EDGE is 120k to 240k.

3G/HDPA is 50k to 7000kbps. (the new rollout).

Yes the Modem will use GPRS/EDGE and then 3G when it's available. You may however never see much speed improvement, or a reduction or and increase to x10 speed, depending how many other people use Meteor for phone calls and Modems in the future where you live.

Voice GSM/3G Phone calls have priority over phone/modem GPRS/EDGE/HSPA data connections. There only needs to be 10 other simultaneous users for 3G/HSDPA to slow to under 100kbps to 200kbps on average in a sector of a mast (1/3rd of cell area).

Thanks watty, I already knew some of that from reading your other posts.. so here's my next question - if there are more than 9 other users in my 'cell' (i think thats the correct term?) will that degrade performance enough to almost a complete stop?

Also - how big is a cell? I live on a mountain with very few other houses nearby (mostly elderly people) and I'm currently using Meteor EDGE connection and getting speeds on average of 25kB/s down which is enough for browsing the web.

So I was thinking when 3G is rolled out maybe it would be an improvement, & maybe there wouldnt be anyone nearby using meteor phones much. I honestly can't see take up of meteors service down here being very big. Meteor store in town don't have a whole lot of information on it and the carphone warehouse here say they won't stock the modems for another year or two (utter rubbish).

It's just Pay as you go midband I want until I can afford to get DSL, something to tide me over.

    Cheers for the info
