    Is that locked up on the Kimmage road outside a petrol station? If it is that one it's been there for weeks... the poor thing.

    It's known as "drillium," and was a big craze in the early 70s. It was indeed done to save weight. Some good magazine scans here. I believe Eddy Merckx started it, or at least had a major influence in popularising it. Here's an article about his hour record that shows his record bike covered with drilled components.
