Hi I was just wondering could anybody give me a low down of what the course is like in 1st year? Has the course been modernised in recent years? My sister graduated from Trinity in 2000 and they had to do physics and maths in 1st year which had nothing to do with pharmacy! Is it still the case that tcd fosters a traditional science method of teaching? or are subjects like pharmacy practice in the 1st year timetable?

I'm a 3rd year pharmacy student and by the sounds of things, had the same setup in 1st year as your sister. They did update the course for the year after us and the claire's link above is the current subjects for the newer course. I know there's at least one member of this board who is doing the new course so I should probably let them answer any specific queries.

    Hey,

Im in first Pharmacy and they have indeed re-vamped the course in the last year or two (I think the current second years did the same course as us in 1st yr, but not the current third years).

In term 1 we had Biology, Biochemistry, Practice of pharmacy, Physiology and Pharmaceutical chemistry lectures. In addition we had a 3 hr biology lab and a 3 hr Pharmacuetical chemistry lab each week. The hourse steadily increased each week from Oct. to Dec until we had 27 hrs in dec.

In term 2 we have maths lectures as well as Pharmaceutics lectures (not sure of their exact name) and in place of the bio and Pharmaceutical chem lab we have 2 other labs quite similar to the Pharmaceutical chem lab.....Hours and 35ish a week and we dont finish until 6 every day except wednesday when the labs are alternated alphabetically....

We have 2 projects due for the end of term and our Biochem exam is in march, not the end of year, so thats an added bit of work.

We have maybe 2 online exams in physiology every month ans theyy conreibute to our grade at the end of the year. Their multiple choice and theres 20 Questions in every exam...

Alot of the Chem based lectures are quite difficult and the maths is a little bit harder than LC higher-level...

    But the craic is mighty!!!

    Hey

I'm going to be starting first year Pharmacy this year. Does anyone have any idea roughly when the exams are held at the end of the first semester? I presume there are exams at Christmas...

Trying to organise something for around Christmas time.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Hey I'm in 3rd Year Pharm, and I'm pretty sure that even with semesterisation this year, you don't have any Christmas exams. You have a Biochem and Physiology exam at Easter (This may be moved earlier due to semesterisation).
