Hopefully someone can get my mind straight re this problem. Myself and a friend decided last year to go to South America for Christmas. My mate’s been there before and said her mum would put a deposit on flight tickets to secure them. I was a little wary as I usually like to book all my own stuff. My mate texted me in May to say this had been done. I offered to pay my share of the deposit, however she said we’d wait till Sept and I could pay her the full amount them. A few weeks ago I asked her to confirm that she was absolutely sure it was sorted and that she’s definitely be going so I could book time off work. She said definitely so I did. Now however she’s saying that she doesn’t think she can afford to cos the flights are too dear. I got a bit pissed off with her and said that she told me she’d put a deposit on so the tickets were booked and surely if this was the case he mum would lose the deposit. Before this I kept asking her for details of the flight etc and she said she’s get back to me but never did. I would never have considered going except that she asked me. I’m tearing my hair out cos my boss won’t change my holidays now so I’ve nearly 3 weeks off and possibly going no-where. I’ve been looking and can find a flight that is in her price range, but dunno whether to push it as we’re meant to be staying with her cousin out there and I don’t want to seem rude. But at the same time I’ve missed out on two holidays already cos thought had to save my time off for this holiday.I feel that she’s been pretty rude about the whole thing to be honest. What should I do??

You may just have to chalk it up to experience - it's a pity she didn't let you know earlier though. She doesn't come across as a very good friend in your post.
You should check out whether your boss is entitled to keep you to these dates for your holidays too - it sounds a bit unreasonable to me.

There's nothing you can do. So I guess the best thing to do is to get over it and get on with your life.
    She's not going on holiday.
    You're not out of pocket.
You learned something about your friend.

    Go on your own.

Was out there last summer and met loads of people.

Would actualy prefer to go on my own again instead of with friends. Much more freedom and you'll meet more people.

i think your friend is stringing you along to be honest. I would seriously doubt that there is any deposit on those tickets (and your gut tells you that aswell).

Tell your friend that it is fine that she isnt going that you were thinking maybe it was for the best. Tell her that you are a little put out but that at least you have nothing lost (money wise). She doesnt deserve to be reimbursed for the deposit (thats if she paid it at all which is highly unlikely). She is the one letting you down so she should have to suffer. She will learn her lesson aswell.

you could always see if any of your other friends wanted to go somewhere around the time of your holidays otherwise negotiate your holidays again with your boss - if she/he is anyway decent they will accomodate you. Its a few months away!

Dont look at this as a bad experience - see it as a learning process and in future either do your own booking or be with the person when they are booking the holidays.

Tip about friends - over time you get to know the ones that will let you down and the ones that dont....Concentrate more on the friends that dont let you down and you cant go far wrong, know the other ones for what they are and as the saying goes - believe it when you see it :)

Good luck i hope it all works out - :)
