Place to Stay and Visit In Venice

Planning a long week-end, Thursday-Sunday, in Venice in September. Has anybody been ?
Looking for advice about places to visit and places to stay.
Had a quick look at some websites and it looks like 150euro per night for a double room.
Do you know of any decent places to stay?
As, we'll be out and about most of the day, I'd be looking for somewhere cheaper.
    Any advice ? Thanks.

the island itself is very expensive to stay. We stayed in treviso about 20 minutes from venice by train, its the town where ryanair fly into but call the airport venice :)

the best piece of advice i can give about venice is just wander around and get lost, walk down the little alleys off the tourist trails, sit by the canals and watch the gondolas and watertaxis go past, bliss.

in terms of touristy things; st marks square (Piazza San Marco) including a trip to the top of the campanile tower, rialto bridge, Doge's Palace, and Burano are some of the main sights

Place to visit: the Doge's Palace is wonderful, and great at noon when it's hot outside as the Palace is so cool instead hehe. :)

I'd recommend bringing in things like a bottle of water/snack as it's often pricey to pick stuff up in the main areas, also shop around for souvenirs.

    Thanks for the advice guys.
Anybody got any advice for places to stay.
Not looking for 5*, need a decent place to crash after the ice creams and gondolas.
I think getting a place outside Venice would be best. Looking at 60yoyos a night instead of 150.
Which areas are safe and best ? I'll check out the Treviso area. Are there others ? Airport hotels tend to be international.
Would like something that feels Italian, if you get my drift. B&B, pension, with a good Italian mama to look after us.
    Thanks.
