PS3 as linux-based Media Center

    Hi folks,

I've got a PS3 hooked up to my HD projector, with a rarely used Ubuntu installed on it. I want to turn it into a media-center. I've tried to install Freevo on it, but I keep hitting brick walls.

So, does anyone know of an idiot-proof media center distro/application that is compatabile with the PS3? Ideally it would play DVD images, xvid, divx, as well as music and photos. It would also need to play nicely with network-attached storage. Does anyone have any advice, pointers or suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!

Yellow Dog is the official cell optimised distro , I have it installed , it works , and the wireless worked first time too , which is somewhat unusual for a linux distro.

The PS3 has a low amount of memory and a specialised cpu , ergo your standard linux distros like Ubuntu will install , but will perform poorly compared to a PC , YDL uses E17 , or " enlightenment" and not so ram heavy desktop that runs better than most of the other distros on the PS3 , Im sure there are other reasons why it runs better , thats just the one that I know of.

Edit , added link to YDL , you can download the ISO's from here and also there is an installation pdf.

Yep, I've messed around with both Ubuntu and YDL on my PS3. However, it all falls down when I try to install a media center (akin to Windows Media Center or Apple's Front Row).

Can you recommend a media center app for YDL? I'm out of my depth when it comes to Linux, so I wonder is there an idiot-proof option?

    Hi Guys!

Right well I installed YDL on my PS3 a few months ago when it became available.
To be honest it was a complete waist of time as Linux seems to be an OS not designed to be used as an efficient means of carrying out tasks!

Take for instance a programme available to utilize Blutooth in the PS3...ya great I downloaded it but could I f*** get it to install??? what is it!!! just give me an OS that can install an App!?

Back to the question of using the PS3 as a media centre.
Basically I have been using an XBOX 1 chipped and XBMC unbelievable!!! excellent!!!
PS3 well the only reason I use it for media is because it has the grunt to playback High Definition! so with that in mind I used TVersity to issue the PS3 with the shared content library!
I suggest you put down that Linux that takes like 3 minutes to load and 3 years to discover what you want to do with it and use TVersity.
Its not pretty as you basically browse your files but hey it works flawlessly for me. Just make sure if your using High Def its h264 codec is profile 4.1 and audio is the preferred AC3 if you dont know what h264 or AC3 is...well Im sorry to say your gonna have to learn as the PS3 is only compatible with a few video codecs.

    Regards,
    Nick.
