Hi, Going to Cork on Thursday. I'm just wondering is there much of a difference between first/business class and standard. There's €20 in the difference for a return fare.

    Cheers

    Very little difference.

The big difference used to be that you were guaranteed a seat in first class, but these days you can book a seat in standard class on the Dublin-Cork trains so no difference there anymore.

The other difference that I know of is that they'll bring food from the dining car for you to eat in first class, but that probably won't make much of a difference to you either.

In terms of comfort, I don't think there's any difference with the seating. You have to go Citygold before you get better seats.

Its not as vast a difference as it used to be. Standard class is quite comfortable once you've booked your seat.

I think all first class coaches on the new Cork trains are identical, be it a City Gold service or not. The seating is slightly more comfortable than standard.

The seats also tilt forward (not backward) which is just wonderful.

Same as on the Enterprise. When you get on in first class, the seats are in a position which could be described as "fine".

There is a control then to adjust it to have your back bolt upright and your arse nearly sliding off the seat.

The only benefit I can see is to have you sitting uncomfortably so that when you go back to the normal position it seems a bit more comfortable than if you hadn't started messing in the first place.

    Hmmm could be :D

I think it is so you can sit forward for a laptop etc. That's was just what I needed on an early morning train to Cork with a hangover and wanting some sleep. Thankfully IE first class has chairs to make this difficult... I'm actually wondering if you're right about the chairs.

There are slightly wider (and adjustable) seats in 1st Class - it's 2+1 instead of 2+2 abreast in Standard Class.

There's at seat catering in 1st Class, with full meals available on the following trains:

    0700, 0800, 1200, 1300, 1500, 1600, 1700 and 1800 ex-Dublin.
    0630, 0730, 0930, 1230, 1330, 1630 and 1730 ex-Cork.

Other than that, it's probably a bit quieter than the rest of the train.

Bear in mind that pricing varies depending on which trains you take. The following trains are priced at EUR 20 higher per leg for 1st Class than all of the others:
    Ex-Dublin: 0700, 0800 and 1700
    Ex-Cork: 0630, 0730 and 1730

    Thanks a million guys.
Think I'll just go standard. It's not too long anyway.

    Cheers,
