    Anyone know a good site for a definition of area under curves ?
    I know how to do it , but the explanation of what is going on in Strouds book
    ENGINEERING MATHS leaves some detail out ?

    It's saying that, as you approach the limit, the area of the full slice is essentially the same as the area of the rectangle, so that the area of the slice divided by its width is the same as the area of the rectangle divided by its width, which is its height, y.

    (I think that if that doesn't satisfy you, then the bit you don't understand isn't the bit in red!)
