80's fancy dress - Would Ya?

I have to put together a party for Mrs. Keefg - she said she wants something special for her big ........well I wont give away her age.

So one of my ideas is for an 80's themed party (she is old enough to remember the 80's in great detail ;) and is a fan of 70's & 80's music), maybe even splashing out on getting an 80's band in (Human League etc) because there are a lot of them reforming & touring nowadays. Having a "proper" 80's band there I think will really put a spark in the night.

If I do go with the 80's theme, is it too much to have it as a fancy dress party?

I know some people just wont bother to turn up to a fancy dress do, or if they do it will be in "normal" clothes which is just as bad. No point just having half a dozen people in fancy dress, I think it will ruin the atmosphere.

    So, any comments/suggestions?

    80's theme or not?
    Fancy dress or not?
If I do go with the fancy dress idea, should it be optional or compulsary?

On one of my birthdays I just threw a party and gave the DJ explicit instructions as to what to play. What made that night for me was the people who showed up and the really great music. A band sounds like an excellent idea.
However given that you are talking about a party for people old enough to recognise eighties music I would say the fancy dress might be a bit much unless you think most of the people would be up for it. I've always reckoned that fancy dress is for specific occasions, not really birthdays, but maybe the decorations could work. Have fun with it.

I'd say go with an 80's theme.

play only 80's music and get folks to dress up.
Was at an 80's new year party and it was great - if it was juts music with no fancy dress - it would not have been as good.

The fancy dress parts seems to break down the whole - I can't dance barrier - thats there at a normal party - to a certain degree.
