    Went to a local shopping centre which has oneof these skystands.
    Guy tells me sky do a refurb condition A Box for €69 so basically i cancel my sky today,go to him tommorow to re enlist with new contract and get sky+ for €69,installation free.Downtime =3-4 days.

    Next i went to another shopping centre sky stand and they offered my a sky box(20 gig hard drive) and installation for €150.

    So what is true and which would be better?Are the new sky boxs 60 gig?So this must be a refurb box if its 20gig?

    Will sky let me cancel/re enlist with new contract within days?

    Regards,

    Kieran

    A former customer does not usually be entitled to subsidied offers. Unless you lie (which is fraud).

    You can sometimes get good value pestering them as an existing good customer.

    A 20G box is ancient, the common old ones are 40G. New boxes are 160 Gbyte.

    A "refurbised" (i.e. S/H or repaired) box is a bad idea:
    * May have slow software
    * may fail and have lesser G'tee
    * Not enough disk for newer Sky services and decent amount of program recording.

    I'd not go for a S/H sky+ less than 80G, and really wouldn't want less than 160. My non-Sky box is 320G and this summer non-Sky Satellite PVRs are shipping with up to 750G.

    New contract = phone connected for a year. If you buy a Sky+ yourself and get existing card changed to it, no phone line can be enforced after connection.

    I'm pretty sure that the smallest HDD in ANY Sky+ box was 40GB.

    The newest Sky+ boxes have 80GB personal storage (actually a 160GB HDD - another 80GB reserved for Sky services).

    I'd never heard of less than 40G, but you never know!

    Why would they do such a thing?

    Well i suppose once i was out of my contract then there should be no problem cancelling and redoing?
    Am i not within my rights to do this?
    According to the sky salesguy this is not a problem.
    I actually rang him earlier to check and if i do redo the contract then it would cost €69 + €10 admin fee in total.

    Are ye saying that this price is not available to other installers/agents to pass on to customers with a what he classed as a grade A refurb box?

    Or is he talking rubbish?
    I really dont know,was just looking at getting on the sky+ bandwagon as cheap as possible as it is annoying to be a sky customer for years and still not get the offers new subscribers get.
    Are all refurb boxs coming out of sky or are they repaired by the installers themselves and resold,in so far as would a refurb box warranty be with sky or the agent?He advised me warranty was one year!!

    Should i just go with sky themselves for piece of mind?

    regds

    Bear in mind the sales guy is on commission. It costs sky money to set up a new contract so I'd threaten to cancel and see will they offer you a deal on your current contract but I think you might find their definition of new customer is someone who has never had sky before

    Tony is being polite.

    They are not repaired by installers :D

    There are 3 box grades

    * Pinched by installer when someone got an upgrade (folks don't realise they own them)

    * Factory repaired (bad idea)

    * New

    Sky has no concept of "redo a contract" the guy is encouraging you to commit fraud to boost his commission.

    Fraud is obtaining more than is on offer otherwise by deception.

    Sky will give you a good deal if you ring an are persistant. Be polite. Try again on a different number, try again next day. Emphasis how long you are a customer. Talk about how interesting NTL's new offers are.

    If you are not really prepared to cancel and have only free channels don't bother. I really really cancelled twice. 6 months after the second time they themselves offered a new Sky box with a 3 month minimum. I'm still subscribing 18months later, so they didn't waste their money.

    I'm not in a huge rush for Sky+ Maybe in 2008 I maight get HD if there is any more content.

    UPDATE,So i rang sky who now have a office in cork for sky plus,got a price of €224 and was also told that there was no problem disconnecting/reconnecting with a new contract.
    It takes a month to cancel guess this is as we pay a month in advance.

    Time to decide the next move.....

    Kieran

    That's odd, as Sky have always frowned upon a person cancelling and resubscribing.

    Unless of course in means 1 year phone connection for someone that had no phone connection.

    Sky+ is now free for any subscribers from July 1st. You still pay the €149 for the box, but the subscription is dropped.

    The sign up a friend thing is for signing up new customers only, and they get free standard installation, dish and box. The person who persuaded them to sign up gets €75. However, iirc this offer will end on June 30th.

    Could well be the standard digibox will become a thing of the past.

    I think the standard digibox would still have its uses for Multiroom purposes, though I think you'd be right when it comes to the likes of new installs, whereby main TV will have Sky+ box by default.

    So is it possible that all sky installers to have acces to these refurbished sky + boxs in case i decided to buy one and a quad lnb?
    And who or where would be the best place of purchasing them?

    Kind Regards,

    Kieran
