I was asked by my boss to look at a choice of 2 different PC's to buy. They are essentially the same but 1 has an Intel chip and the other an AMD.

He wants to know which is better (i.e. faster)

    Options:

    Intel Pentium D (3.00GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2x2MB L2Cache, Dual Core Technology)

    AMD AthlonTM64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200

Everything else on PC is exact same. The cost is slightly lower on the AMD (by only €10)

I don't know much about processors, i think the intel is faster (3GHz against 2.2GHz (according to amd's site) ) but not sure...

I would go with the Intel Chip. However just because it is capable of higher speeds 3.00GHz, doesn't mean this will mena your computer will be faster. Could depend on what type of connection bus is coming with the AMD machine and compare it to the 800MHz of the intel chip.

Most of the times an intel chip is the better option.

    Hey dulpit,

Just check out the link below and you can compare the two Processors.

    Definitely the X2.

    Faster does not mean better.

It's all relative, really, relative to what the intended use is. If it is simple day-to-day office tasks, then the difference will be negligible.

    They're both X2.

Personally I go with AMD, but have nothing against Intel. All depends on intended use in the end. For these, I'd doubt you'll see any real difference so just pick one and go with it. Since the price difference is negligible there's no real difference.

To satisfy the boss, just tell him the one you picked is better, whichever one you pick, he won't know the difference.

    The x2 4200 is better.
Only in the area media encoding will the pentium d be up there with x2.
The x2 4200 is a great chip but it nonsense to be buying a new pc and not be going for core duo processor.
Eseentially the entry model core duo processor will cost the same price and these processors are truly a cut above the other two (pentium d and x2).
So tell your boss to buy a core duo pc. And remeber when comparing amd and intel clock speeds mean very little days.

Core2Duo is Intel's piece de resistance, and is the most popular processor range for new performance machines. Has been for almost a year. If a processor from the C2D range is out of the question, an AMD chip will eat a similar Intel chip for breakfast.

My advice would be look for a machine with a C2D processor but failing that, go for the AMD 4200+.

Yup , as posted above , in this case the AMD is way better , Intel were lagging behind AMD until they released the core2duo , so go for the AMD , the pentium D chips were power hungry beasts and were inferior in all ways that matter.

How does that make sense? One is a Pentium D, one is an AMD X2...a Pentium D is not called an X2.

I'd go with the AMD from those two.
