Anyone familiar with her or her band? I stumbled across some songs on the net and I was immediately impressed. Unlike some jpop/jrock bands who can be kinda gimmicky, these guys really have some amazing talent.

Ever since the original Ouendan (and before) I've been keeping one eye on the japanese scene, as best as I can. This is the first time I thought, here's a band who should have a big appeal outside of Japan (despite the language barrier).

I've been a Shiina Ringo fan for a few years now. Her album 'karuki zemen kurinohana' is one of my top ten albums. Its perfectly produced, arranged, written and played. Her masterpiece. A bit like Bjork/radiohead/countless other influences. Got it brought back from Japan. The Japanese music scene is a strange one. You're right, you have all that j-pop pants, but if you dig deep enough you can find some gems. Flipper's Guitar and Blankey Jet City to name a couple more.

Oddly enough, few ever bother with the rest of the world. All I can think of is Cornelius, or possible the Boredoms and 5678's but not so much, as an artist that has really taken off in the west. Probably because Japan is enough commercial-wise. It's a huge industry. A shame because most people miss out on stuff like Shiina Ringo.

I'm not so much in to Tokyo Jihen though. A few good songs, mind, but not nearly as good as she was on her own.
