pc monitor as tv?

I'm in the process of buying a dell media centre pc and just can't make my mind up on what monitor to pick. I want to use the monitor as a tv and am looking at the dell 20.1" ultrasharp widescreen and the 22" budget widescreen. Both are roughly the same price and while obviously the 22" is bigger, the 20" is better quality I guess.

Can anyone tell me if the quality of tv on a pc monitor is any good?

    Any advice would be appreciated!

i have a 21inch crt tv, before i bought the scart connector to join the mediacenter to my tv, i used the monitor, it looked absolutly rediculous :o (and my other tv is only 28inch)

buy a normal monitor, and use your normal telly for mediacenter,
i'd expect that its easy enough to set xp up to use both

Thanks mukki, but the problem is my tv is well past it's sell by date! I've seen the dell 24" monitor used as a tv & it looked good but the price of them is rediculous which is why I'm looking at the smaller ones that are less than half the price!

tv as a monitor can look great, it really depends on where the stuff your watching is coming from, eg a basic tv tuner card, a digital tuner card, dvds.

I have an ultrasharp display on my laptop, and the extra resolution is worth having for me anyway, it's what i'm used too and wouldnt go back to the lower resolution.

The main advantage I can think for going for the ultrasharp over something with lower resolution for tv use, is that youre getting something which should look better with 1080p hd content (eg hd dvd/bluray). If the two monitors are the same resolution, the bigger monitor might be a better choice

One thing you might want to check is the aspect ratio of the monitors, to see if it's 16:10 or 16:9 just to know what your getting.

If you'll be sitting back from the monitor a good bit, the higher resolution probably won't look any different to the lower resolution, so maybe the bigger screen size would be better.

Have you considered getting something like a 32" lcd, pricewise they seem great value for the size of tv you're getting, and for use with a mediacentre should be great. But I'm guessing it's not what your looking for

It wasn't but I'm coming around to that way of thinking now! I got Dell to quote me the pc I'm going to buy without the 24" monitor and the difference is 800 euro (ex vat). I don't want a huge tv, 32" max, so I guess I should be able to find something decent for the money I'm saving on the dell monitor?
