    Hi,

can anyone recommend a good studio/portraiture course - one suitable for a digital SLR.

I know that the Gallery of Photography does one, but that seems (a) geared towards film and (b) no spaces available until October.

I was actually thinking of making a short holiday of it and going to somewhere in the UK - so that's an option either. One place that looked pretty OK was photocourses.co.uk - and I could get there via the ferry.

Any suggestions welcome - especially if you have an personal knowledge of them.

There seems to be little commercial interest in providing these courses in Ireland, probably due to the market size. Just an idea, why don't we organize a group of willing amateurs and learn from each other. Either by sitting for each other or by hiring one or more models for a session. Split the costs for the studio and models or do it in somebodies garage...

I done that portrait photgraphy course in temple bar gallery of photography, it was very good and it was geared more towards digital, at the time the instructor was using a canon 1Ds which was hooked up to his apple mac. Each week everyone in the course done a portrait of there choice (ie replicate magazine shots or what ever they wanted) and instructor would set up lightening for that shot. I would recommend the course, it really make no odds if you had a digital or film camera in the studio. If you can't wait till october try this link, from other forms it gets good reviews about the training.

I did some portrait shots with a model in dublin studios about a month or so ago and the guy who owns it is very down to earth and helpful - he mentioned something similiair. Said that the studio could take small groups of photographers who wanted to split the cost of hiring the studio between them - (its 40 euro per hour) and he said that they can also supply models if required. Or if you know anyone who wants to bring them instead. The time I did it he spent about a half hour (before the official time kicked in) running through all the equipment, wireless flash, studio lights, gels filters etc. Definitely recommend it. Here is the website if anyone is interested -

I would be interested in hiring a place with a group, but I would still like to get some sort of formal introduction first. I am reasonably OK with things like landscape etc., but have no idea about how to arrange studio lighting or getting a particular effect.

Once I learn the 'right' way to do things, then I can go and practice my own way !

The Gallery of Photography once still sounds interesting, so I may just put my name down and wait.

    Hi All,

I run a digital photography school in Dublin. I would be happy to put a short course together for Studio Flash photography using our own studio in Park West Dublin 12.

I would put together illustrated notes around all the techniques required and critique shots taken.

Numbers would be an issue but I think I could run a half day course (weekend would be ideal) but with a minimum of 6 students at a cost of about 100 euros each.

Let me know if anyone is interested by sending an email to portraits@digitalbeginners.ie

    cheers

    Dave

    Hi Dave,

sounds interesting in principle, but I can't see that a half-day would allow very much time for practical work - especially with 6 people.

Your website looks good for digital beginners - do you have any examples of your studio portrait work ?

Sure, no problem. I'll post them here in a day or so. I'm away on a shoot for a couple of days, I'll go through the archive when I get back.
