So we were playing a game in the pub a few nights ago... i was dealer and had just put out the turn. The player who was knocked out last hand offered to deal for the remainder of the game (usually happens, speeds things up.) He thought the board was complete and started to shuffle the cards in his hand, however the river was not yet on the table.... No one knew what to do but we made the top card on the deck the river without a burn.... i actually think that this was the proper method, but then again i'm not sure. Can anyone help on this matter?

I think you should have burned a card anyway... You should try to remember that the purpose of the burn card is to hide the next card that is coming in case somebody spots and recognises a mark on that card (ie. extra information).

Other than that, since the river has been altered now anyway, I guess there's nothing you can do but carry on.

I presume when you say shuffled the cards in his hand that he didn't shuffle the muck (disposed cards) back into the deck? This could change things maybe... a redeal in that case? Maybe not... I'd guess it's very much house dependant.

    Muck cards weren't shuffled.
