I have a Hp-pavilion-zt1122s laptop running Ms Xp which has a s-video port on the back. The tv I have as a s-video on the front, have connected the laptop and tv together with the s-video cable but am not getting anything on the tv screen.Off hand does anyone know if you have to alter any settings or should you see on your tv what is on your laptop when you connect via s-video. The general idea was to play my dvd's/divx movies through the laptop onto my tv.

    Thks

You generally have to tell the laptop to output to the TV port.
In Contorl Panel/Display\setting press the advanced button. One of the tabs will have an option to output to the TV (on my compaq it is Displays but it can vary)

Here you select to output to the TV or S-Video port.

Also not there is a chance you will get the output in Black and White on the TV. This is because TV actually have two types of S-Video input (can not remember the details) got something to do with the lumance or Chromance not being connected on older models
You can get a adapter from Maplins to convert the S-video plug to a phono plug and hey presto it works.

Of course it may be easier to buy a DVD player for €69

Generally you should look in the Display Properties -> Advanced Options (right click) on the desktop and go from there).

Also, a common thing on laptops is to hold the function key ([Fn]) and press F5 or something.
look for a small icon/pictogram on the keys that might look like a screen or the phrase "TFT/TV" or something.
You might have to hit it a couple of times depending on whether you want LCD, VGA-Out, TV-Out or some combination of the 3.

Try and get a "registered" version of Tv-tool.
You will need the integrated no-macrovision to play the DVD's.
Otherwise it will be all flickery and pointless.
Also Tv-tool removes the black "letterbox" overscan lines around the tv image.
Im using tv-out now. Tv-tool kicks ass.

Omathuna you were spot on and as you said it comes up B+W, I will probally get that jobby from Maplins as you surely wont get a cheap dvd player that does the dvix combinations for €69 would you ?. I am actually just waiting for the Ex v3 chip for the xbox to be realised so I can do all this on my xbox so this is a quick fix. Forgive my noobness but I take it s-video only does video as I was not getting sound, so I will have to run a seperate cable for sound?.
You were spot on SyxPak, as said those keys were present, but for some reason when I click on Tv as the output the laptop screen goes black which is no big deal as I use the tv screen to see what I need to click on the laptop.
Thanks Nick Oliveri got a copy last night and will have a play around with it to day, when you say "You will need the integrated no-macrovision to play the DVD's" is this a particular version of Tv-tool or is it another device. Does it also affect dvix's as this is what I will be playing most

All help and input was much apprectiate lads :D

Most laptops i seen could show both screens at same time fine , sound can be a bitch to get working ,a line out to 2 phonos means the tv will have sound on one AV and pic on other (very annoying).

Line out to 2 phonos plugged into a stereo kinda makes using the laptop and very messy thing with wires everywhere.

Use speakers coming out of the laptop they usually better sounding than the ones built in.
