Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Anyone else finding Ken Early's voice a bit irritating? I have no problem with his regular speaking voice but he frequently breaks into this fake pseudo shouty voice on the podcast. Adds nothing & it would be much better if he cut this out i think. Apart from this I do like the show though

i've said it from the start, they need to sort out the volume with his voice. i used to listen to this with earphones, and would have to turn it up occasionally, only to be deafened by the shouting a few seconds later.

they're quite lucky with their timing. they started the football podcasts at the start of this season, and have the world cup to carry them on into the summer. i wonder would they cut back on them if it was a free summer, esp since they don't dare talk about the LOI?

I think there's a problem with the volume in general.

I have to turn it up to full volume so i can hear it in the car. Have to listen to the radio on my earphones in the gym, because i can't hear the lads over the piss poor half arsed Ibiza music they seem to think everyone wants to hear in there.

I think Richie often sounds like a guy down the pub having a bit of a rant. Often starts asking Eoin/Ken questions which i don't think works. As a guest he shouldn't he be the one providing the expertise. The GAA contributors like Oisin McConville come across much better.

I like the voices Ken does when he quotes someone. Adds a comedic element to it, which I quite like.

Good point. Why do they never talk about League of Ireland? Perhaps they never watch it, but then they could bring someone in who does.

Ah no, Murph is back on the football show.

Ah Ken is brilliant, loved his line about Moyes a few weeks ago 'when he's in his bathroom winning the argument he should have had with Rio Ferdinand' or something along those lines.

the last two shows with murph hosting has lots of background noises coming from someones computers, pretty rookie stuff. Sounds like gchat messagea and skype opening up. Come on guys turn off the computer sounds.

To be fair, that happens a lot even when Murph isn't hosting.

I actually thought Murph did a very good job hosting the Football Show on Tuesday. Think it suited him a lot more to be hosting than trying to contribute to it.

i agree, i was listening to it and thought ah shyte when he started off, but he was pretty good. didn't seem to cut in as much as eoin usually does. seemed to flow nicely.

This was fierce annoying, but Murph was decent to be fair...

Was half tempted to leave todays football show when I heard Murph was filling in for Eoin, but he was surprisingly alright. His annoying Republic of Telly like sense of humour was definitely toned down too.

Think the football show (and Ken) are both just more suited to having two people contributing instead of three.Eoin/Ken and Murph/Ken are both grand, but it gets a bit messy when all three are involved and competing to get their voices heard.

That's coming from the contributers comouters, was it Miguel Delaney on the line, he obviously has Facebook open, nothing the lads can do about that.

On another note....has anyone signed up to a KBC savings account or is that just an utter waste of time?

It wouldn't be too hard to ask all the contributors to mute their computers and phones before the interview starts.

Their audio issues do let them down too often.

Headsets would also solve the problem, and stop Miguel Delaney sounding like he's in a big empty kitchen...

I don't get that. It's not live - so they have time to fix things by stopping and starting again, but even if the line is really awful they seem to just plough on regardless. It could just be down to not having a sound engineer, which they would have had on the radio show.

Indeed. They should pay for headsets to the contributors.

I thought last nights football show was excellent - best one for ages. Good interview with that guy who wrote the book on penalty kicks, quality preview of the Champions League final and some good interplay between Eoin and Ken.

I thought the monkey chat just about overstayed it's welcome.

Some really great episodes lately alright. The penalty interview was particularly interesting. I still hear the odd computer sound and it's not from miguel (he is actually my least favourite guest).

Eoin and Murph will be hosting a weekly GAA show on Radio 1 at 6pm every Sunday from June 22nd according to Second Captains Twitter.

Ken's own radio 1 philosophy hour can't be far away now!

Good news. Will be interesting to see how they will go down with much of Radio 1 listeners I.e. the 50+. But I assume that has been thought of and will be tailored to suit a wider audience than for there podcast

There was already a GAA show on at that time so they are just replacing that

Got to agree with this. I still tune into the OTB show on Newstalk because it's live but I'd love an alternative. Hopefully this is a good omen. I can't see RTE ever airing a 2-3 hour nightly sports show though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,418 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

When they said on show Thursday that there'd be a big announcement I figured it might be something to do with the world cup, but it's GAA instead... Fairy nuf, GAA is big, but alas I am not a fan.

With OTB getting BOD I wonder are they feeling the heat? Or do they consider themselves in any competition now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,674 ✭✭✭✭Ol' Donie

Are they doing any world cup specials? Surely Ken is going to do more than the usual two shows, considering he's going all the way over for it?

(I understand The Guardian Football Weekly with James Richardson will be daily during the tournament. I've only started listening recently, I heartily recommend it to anyone who doesn't listen.)

They haven't said anything about doing anything different for the world cup. I suspect Ken will be doing more writing than just his usual monday column though. His piece on England's lost decade during the week was brilliant.

am i the only one who can see this being the end of the second captains as a 5 man team. eoin and murph are taking over the 'take your point' slot which is kinda like 606 on 5live. RTE have no use for the other 3 at this point on the radio.

Mark Horgan will be part of the radio show as well and the TV is going to be on 3 nights a week in the autumn. So...I think any talk of their demise is a bit premature. Who knows, RTE might have other plans for them on radio once the gaa season is over.

    Nothing's confirmed yet...

but it was the same journalist who broke the original story about them being in talks with RTE over a TV series.

ah.. completely missed the news of the tv show being on times a week.

That was only mentioned in one report, in The Irish Sun a few months ago.

I would be sceptical about it until it is confirmed. It's hard to see how they would have enough material for three programmes a week.

There is no need for Ken, who is a complete one trick pony soccer and soccer only. His ignorance of any other sports is incredible and when I hear him talking about other sports I fast forward.

Not to be totally negative Horgan is an excellent presenter in his own right

Quite a few more people listen to the football podcast than listen to the general sports one. Ken is their biggest draw. I bit surprised that RTE haven't figure this out yet, then again RTE does tend to move in mysterious ways.

Ken's the most entertaining part of SC for me.He's a soccer journalist so why would to know much or talk about other sports in depth?

Murph is the most dispensable imo. He's essentially a culchie version of Eoin (not nearly as good as him) with a crap 'trying too hard to be funny' sense of humor and a penchant for interrupting people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,009 ✭✭✭✭wnolan1992

Calling Ken a "one trick pony" just because he only really knows about soccer is a bit harsh IMO. He's excellent at talking about soccer, that's all that matters. I'll often skim through the first show picking out segments to listen to, but I'll almost always listen to the entire Football Show. Granted that's also because soccer is the sport I'm most interested in, but Ken's a big draw too.

It will be interesting to see though, as time goes by, will they continue to do four shows a week when this new radio show starts and if a new series of the TV show begins...

Football podcast up early this morning as Ken is heading to the airport.

They announced they'll be doing two extra World Cup shows every week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays as well as the normal football shows on Monday and Thursday.

4 hours a week of WC coverage from Ken - very, very happy :D

Jaysus between that and Football Weekly podcasting daily there won't be enough hours in the day to listen to everything. A good complaint I guess.

Richie Sadlier's story about how the Ireland Under 20 team relieved their boredom in Nigeria was entertaining.

That's the kind of revelation you wouldn't get from Richie when Bill O'Herlihy is grilling him on RTE!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,805 ✭✭✭Swan Curry

Once again Richie was the highlight of the podcast,he's got a great ability to explain what he means simply without using soundbites.I don't think I've ever not enjoyed a segment with him.I even watch the RTÉ panel if he's on,and I'm not particularly interested in football.

I hope and fully expect SC pod to be better than football weeklys WC daily. They have basically just recapped the results, play a few national anthems and make some predictions. Very short pods with barely any discussion or analysis. Very disappointed in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,718 ✭✭✭Cartman78

Not sure if I heard him being interviewed on Second Captains, OTB or Football Weekly but Fernando Duarte's book "Shocking Brazil: Six Games That Shook the World Cup" is available for just 99p on Amazon at the minute.

Catching up on a backlog of podcasts now....still decent overall quality but starting to find the GAA coverage a bit lifeless/flat
