Anyone know if there is HTC Hero's in stock on Pre-pay with Meteor?

I asked one of the sales guys in my local meteor and he said there are no Hero's on pre-pay in stock anywhere...only on Bill-Pay

I reckon he is just tryna get me to sign onto a contract!

Hey. I have been trying to get one off them on prepay too this week. I got the same story. Now the word is that Sigma, who I think are Meteor's suppliers, have gone belly-up, or they're having some difficulties, so there might be a supply issue. However, the staff didn't seem to be interested in me unless I sign a contract with them. They have the handsets on billpay of course. They told me to try the online store (which has been closed since last week). So we might have to wait a week or two :(

I just use the one APN setting, works perfectly

    APN: internet
    Proxy: 62.40.32.40
    Port: 8080
    Username: <Not set>

    MCC: 272
    MNC: 02
    APN Type: internet + mms
    Authentication Type: Normal(PAP)

Those work for me on o2 prepay (albeit on the Samsung Galaxy Spica, rather than the Hero)

MMS are sent through the internet data connection so make sure you have network data turned on.

    The program ignores system apps.

I m not sure what program you're using, if its Advanced Task Manager, it does not ignore the system apps.
Also keep in mind some system apps are different from android phone to another. It sounds strange that the app you're using knows what is what.
checking the provider of the app wouldnt help either or it would be ignoring Google maps as well..

I don't know if I saw it here or some other forum, but someone suggested to turn the pin code lock off. I know it is not the best solution, nor the safest, but I didn't have any "No service" message in three days (since I did turn the pin code off). It doesn't mean it fixed the issue, but I think phone is logging to the network automatically.

If anyone else can try this and see if it is really working or I was just lucky for the last couple of days.

i have been testing this since last night. Previously I was constantly getting the no service problem at home - since I have simply turned off the pin request (and switched the 3g access back on) it has been fine.

There's no such thing as a "System App". Anything that's vital to the Android system runs as a process, not an app. If you end the messaging app, the next time you get an SMS, Android will restart it. The messaging app isn't what "receives" the SMS, it just reads the database where it's stored. I'm not certain, but I believe the Gmail app works the same way, that's why if you click the Process tab in Advanced Task Manager, even if you end the Gmail app, there's still a Gmail Storage Process.

And if an app doesn't show up in the list of ATM, hitting End All won't make a difference to it

It's Advanced Task Killer. The closest thing it lists to a system app is Settings.

The only difference between the apps list in Advanced Task Killer and Advanced Task Manager is that ATM lists the running widgets as well as the apps

Having a few problems getting my mail setup right.

I'm using the gmail client, set via the gmail web page (on the PC) to poll two other POP accounts that I have. The gmail app in the phone then should get "push" mail via this.

However, there can be a significant delay in the mail arriving at the phone. Eg, at 13.10 today I received an email on the PC, but the same email only arrived on the phone at 14.51.

What gmail setups are people using? (I have the IMAP and POP disabled on my gmail settings which I access through the google site on the PC) which I believe means the gmail app reverts to push syncing.

I have my pop email routed through gmail. Emails land in my on-line mailbox & on my phone simultaneously....

I finally got it sorted with the settings mentioned below. I went on to a site called talk202 and they seemed to sort it out for me. Now I dont know what they did but I can send and receive mms messages now anyway

whats Google Partner setup on my magic then?
    Market?
    google mail?
    messaging?
yeah some of them have services as well. it doesnt change the fact that if you terminate the app, it wont show you the new messages (in case of messging app).
    I was oversimplifying.

It's pretty handy, the exact settings are available in your gmail settings.

I was just checking and sent a test, it arrived into my gmail mailbox when viewed on the PC (took a manual check of the pop3 account but that seems to be the norm, gmail sets the polling frequency based on usage), however, the email didn't appear on the phone until I manually hit refresh.

The phone is set for background sync, sync all for inbox etc etc.

When your phone receives a message, the service that handles messages starts up the default messaging app (whatever the default app is set to, stock, Handcent, whatever), which then notifies you. It doesn't matter at all whether the actual app was running when the message was received

As for the Google Partner Setup app, I have no idea what it does (try switching to it), but it's obviously not too crucial, since it's never running on my phone (Samsung Galaxy Spica running stock Android 1.5). From looking around, it appears to relate to the actual setting up of an account for syncing with Google

its what is needed to synch everything to google. you terminate it, and 24h after your phone will force close until you reboot it.
the components can be services and apps. it is not true that the service will restart the app. the two things are in most cases not related. the service will still be connecting and synching the databases but if the app is not running you will not get any notification.
try killing the Alarm app and see if you wake up in the morning.

I dont know how its called on a Spica. this is a Hero thread..

    Hmmm.

My Hero has started to run a bit slower now, and just checked, everything seems to be stored on the internal memory, with the SD card virtually empty, apart from some songs I banged onto it.

Is there a way to change the primary storage, or do I have to root it to do this?

Haven't rooted yet, still running stock Hero rom.

Also, when it comes to rooting, do I need to get a micro SD adapter?

Modaco rom supports A2SD (apps to SD) but you need to root to install it.
You dont "need" an adapter, but i found that in some cases makes things easier (transfer of large maps for example). they are very cheap and come with most micro sd cards..

Cool so, Modaco, here I come.

More specifically, do I need the adaptor for rooting the phone? Thought I read somewhere I would.

Have one, but I don't trust it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Don't want to start rooting to find out the damn thing isn't working.

I have rooted one.. but no, it wasnt necessary.
(i noticed the newer ones are more reliable, the old ones may fail with bigger/newer micro sdcards)

    Hiya folks,

Great tips and tricks in this thread.

I've just had my UK Orange Hero unlocked and it is working grand with my Irish 3 SIM. However does anyone have the settings for the internet/3G on Three.ie. I tried the search function and found the settings for Meteor/O2 et al but none for three.

    All help appreciated.
