I don't think it's Power Bending, as such. If anything, I think it could be an improvement of the technique that we saw from Ty Lee, where she was able to hit certain points to stop their bending.

I was thinking it might be a specialised version of air-bending. Water has blood bending, fire has electricity, earth has metal... Though I'm not sure.

Highly doubt it, my money is on a permanent chi block

It's a good point though, what is the specialized version of air bending?

If you check out the avatar wiki here it tells you each of the special techniques, so for instance bloodbending is just one of several special waterbending techniques, and for airbenders its gliding, air scooters, amplification and cloud bending. Yes reading those they dont seem as awesome as the others special abilities but you have to remember airbending is the most evasive of the 4 styles and thats reflected in all its abilities

Awh! I only just copped it there as you said. What a lovely tribute to the original Iroh.

Yeah it is a lovely little touch, now i have to go back and watch that episode but im not complaining

Any time I see "Tales of Iroh" from Tales of Ba'Sing'Se, I get chills. It's such a poignant moment - for me, one of the best from Legend of Aang.

Another very good episode. I really like the way they do the recaps. Very clever.

    LOVED the
flashes of adult Sokka, Toph and Aang
    . Don't trust
    Mako's new love interest
    though.

There are five bending arts, the fifth is the chi. Only Avatars are said to have the powers to totally remove someones chi, which makes you wonder who Amon is.

I saw Aang alright, but I never copped the others were Sokka and Toph. Went back to watch that part and you're right. I love the little touches like that. Pretty decent episode - thought the sequence in the temple, where the Chi-Blockers were only visible when Korra was firebending was excellently done. Definitely don't trust Mako's love interest, or her father.

I still think it's more a style of chi-blocking rather than an actual bending.

The ability Aang used in the original series wasnt chi blocking it was energybending. He bends someone soul or energy to remove or impart something. Ty Lee used chi blocking and now the Equalists do as well and its up for debate whether Amon is using Chi Blocking or Energybending as the only way he could have learnt energybending is from a Giant Lion Turtle(doubtful) or a spirit(possible) and its not only Avatars who can do it its just Aang was the only person taught the ability in a few 1000 years

The main reason I'm not sure if it is enegrybending is that Amon and the Equalists are vehemently anti-bending, so surely they would be against their leader being a bender?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 8,490 Mod ✭✭✭✭Fluorescence

Besides that, they couldn't teach anyone off the street to energybend, could they?

I kept looking in to prime time cartoons with the hope of seeing a post on this. Didnt think just to check the television forum.

Loving the new series so far. I think I've watched episodes 1 & 2 three or four times now, they nailed the balance between nods to the original series and new material. I am thrilled how different Korra is to Ang but still incredibly likeable as a character.

I think thats what they call a *twist* in the industry :D

Aman could very well be a bender, in fact the very position he puts his hands on the firebenders head etc matches what Ang did at the end of Avatar to the firelord. And the spirits said it was a power that they had before the creation of the avatar.

But if he's a former Avatar then its probably someone before Ang since there cant be anyone between Korra and Ang (it goes earth - fire - wind -water etc)

unless another twist is that Korra's family is actually from the earth kingdom and had escaped to the southern water tribe during the 100 year war and have lived with the water tribe since.

Considering that there were no water benders in the southern tribe except Katarra for such a long time who would know?

So he could be a avatar that was taken out of the cycle.

Gotta be the craziest and wildest speculation ive seen so far tbh.
Ill say again you dont have to be an Avatar to use energybending you just need to be given the power by an energy bender.

Anyone work out the rules of the pro-bending sport yet?

I'm not 100% sure how the point system works...

I found these on this website, but I'm not sure where they got them -

Episode 5 was pretty funny, I really enjoyed it :D. It's nice to have some non-Amon themed episodes in between the heavier ones.

I find it interesting that the father of Toph's children isn't known.

Great episode, really thought we were gonna see the first glimpse of Korra in the Avatar state or her airbending for that final round. Airbending might not be so "legal" as far as pro-bending rules go but as long as she sticks to water bending i see no problem with her getting some glowy eyes action going

    Just gonna say this

ADULT ANG looks like a badass!!!

Yes he does cannot wait for the inevitable flash back episodes so we get to see some grown up Aang gang action.

As for episode 6 it was pretty good, Amon is steamrolling through everything so theres gonna have to be a win on the cards for the good guys soon, also a bit dissapointed with the complete lack of Korra airbending so far

Holy crap. What an episode. The action sequences just keep getting better and better - that closing section? That was like most finales, but it's only the 6th episode. Excellent.

RE: Korra's airbending - I can somewhat understand it. In the Legend of Aang, the only way for Aang to defeat the Firelord was if he fully mastered all the elements, so these were the main focus. However, for this, there is no such need (yet).

Aang does look a bad ass grown up though.

    That......
    was.......
    AWESOME!!!!

The battle at the end. And, as boney said, only 6 episodes in. I would imagine, that when we do see the Avatar State it will be similar to the time at the end of Aang Season 1: I think she also will lose control and that everyone will be terrified and shocked at it's power. That it'll isolate Korra a bit from her friends and will be exactly what Amon was looking for in getting people to his anti-bending side.

Toph's daughter is a badass!!!!!! too. (And loved the briefest glimpse of Toph in the flashback obviously at some trial that links to the current situation/Amon).

    Also, I saw a screengrab/wallpaper
Of Korra talking to adult Aang in spirit form as he used to do with Roku. It may have been fan-made but I suppose it's gonna happen eventually

Since there is only going to be twenty-odd episodes (can't remember the exact amount) I would imagine that it's going to be three books of around 8 episodes so the fireworks will by flying pretty much from now on I suppose

Currently theres 26 episodes over 2 seasons with an option for more

Oh was that the structure? I was thinking it might have been along the lines of the 26 over three books with a couple of long mid season breaks. There's the option for more? Wonder how they'll structure the book/season structure. Surely it'll get other seasons if they want. Avatar was a big ratings and critics winner and even bigger DVD winner for them surely......... (Where's Richard Dower's numbers fetish when ya need it :)

If 26 over two seasons (Each season being a book I presume) then, if they do take the option of another season I presume they would only choose to do one more season ala Aang: have your story, start it, develop it, finish it........ (although it would be great to see a 23 episode Book Three. Loving it so far)
