If you start in the first wave and can't run under 3.30, then you are part of the problem. You are one of the runners that everyone else has to weave around.

And for what? So you can see if you're the 3000th runner home or the 4000th? Who cares?

Dead right with the bolded bit.
I've looked into a few more results now and it seems that these guys who started in earlier waves than they should have (on colours) have been nicely rewarded with about 5 minutes off their marathon times . Huge mess up really as I know two guys who will have now qualified for Boston when they didn't deserve to (if it's not remedied of course)

Had a shocker yesterday but learnt so much from it. I think I went into it a little to confident and yesterday gave me a good kick up the ar$e. I didn't have enough respect for the distance. Was aiming for under 3.28 and came in at 3.39. Started way to fast, didn't pace properly and blew up at 17. Never really recovered from that.

The positives to take from yesterday for me is that I will take next year much more serious. I was far to calm during the race and in training. I thought I was something I wasn't.

Thought I was able to this comfortably enough and boy did I learn my lessons yesterday. I'm going to give it my all next year and really knuckle down and take it seriously. At the end yesterday I was embarresed because I knew I could have done some much better if I hadn't pi$$ed about.

    RESPECT THE MARATHON!!

While I do not condone starting in the wrong wave, you should not post that as a response to a runner who started in the right wave. Plus, he broke 3:30, so he clearly would not have been out of place in wave 1.

I've looked into a few more results now and it seems that these guys who started in earlier waves than they should have (on colours) have been nicely rewarded with about 5 minutes off their marathon times . Huge mess up really as I know two guys who will have now qualified for Boston when they didn't deserve to (if it's not remedied of course)

well guys.. there's 2 issues here. Selfish runners and a royal screw up by the race organisers.

On the first issue I agree that runners should be honest with themselves as well as with other runners. But I'd guess 99% of runners who positioned themselves in the first wave genuinely felt that they could do sub 3.30.

When i signed up i put down the second wave, as i was carrying an injury and I thought it was a realistic assesment. However I got a bit of form going as race day approached and asked at the Expo if I could be moved up. They gave me a little orange sub 3.30 sticker to place over my Green number.

I finished somewhere around 3.21 but because of whatever happened with the chips I have no exact time. I was credited with a 3:17.30 clock and chip time. As Diggy originally stated - this is my clock time minus 5. I was also credited with 33 minutes for the first 10k which is good going!

Anyhow, my point is that from another perspective - its the chip timers that deserve the grief here. I'm sure most of the green numbers who joined the first wave had genuine intentions.

Now hang and calm down for a second. "Royal screw up" is out of order.

Firstly, the organisers and the timing company are 2 different entities.

Secondly, these are not the final results yet. Wait and see if they fix the issue before you jump onto someone's throat.

You're bang on with your reprimand on my reference to the organisers. I shouldn't have used word organisers... sloppiness on my part - you'll see i refer to chip timers later in the post. The race organisers are fantastic people... and every credit to them.

On your second point. i have my Irish Indo for the scrap book now with wrong time. It should have been right from the start. i paid my 90 euro.

There was no 10k mat, that's your 5 mile time.

That is definitely a screw up on DCM's part as TDS live have it listed as a 5 mile split....also the 30k split on the DCM results is actually your 20 mile split.

Passed a couple of guys on the North Circular who commented '3:30?, Good Luck!' they were doing at best 9 min miles, the starting position of the pacers were spot on, there could be more obvious visual reminders for people who haven't got the cop on to start where they should though. In saying that, giant balloons didn't help them:rolleyes:.

it finaly makes sense. I was in wave 1 yesterday, after about 7 miles i met a person from my running club who started with the 3:15 pacers but was going bad. We ran together for 5 miles and at mile 12 i went ahead of him. I ran well till the last 6 miles and cramps slowed me down. As i was stretching alot i didn't see people pass me and i checked the results this morning and he finished 2 minutes ahead of me. However i looked at his split times which indicate he was always ahead of me. Looking at the video he was waering a green number and at the start of the race must have skipped to wave 1 instead of going to wave 2. So i actually finished 3 minutes ahead of him. Checked the video's for the finish line and the clock confirms this.

This was a big mistake, i wonder how many went in the wrong wave?

Well done Lex Luther. There's a great pic of you on the DCM facebook page. You are on the finishing straight and look in pain :)

yes I saw the facebook picture ...its very attractive ...I dont look like i'm trying at all do I ?
(there's also some video footage on the results page showing me shouting at myself like a mad person all the way down the last 100 metres ..something else it will take me awhile to live down...:o)
thanks again for your help and support ( and drinks...and encouragement etc etc) along the way...when I lost the pace group at 22 miles I thought I was done for but somehow managed to regroup)

Absolutely agree with that, I didn't mean to infer that anyone was deliberately trying to gain an advantage and reading back on my original message it may well have appeared that way.

Hmm, that's interesting. I signed up for the middle wave, but decided to run in costume, so started right at the back. Does that mean I can subtract five minutes from my time?

    don't understand this post?

i ran under 3.30 but started in the 2nd wave but had to pass out thousands who had obviously started in the first wave.

Sorry, my mistake. I thought you were slower than that but were thinking of going in the first wave in future so your gun time would match your chip time.

Sorry for the hijack but I've no log to post in so just gonna slap it in here.......

Think Im still in shock over what happened yesterday. I trained like a beast for this marathon, some of the things that I put myself through I dunno, I questioned my own sanity on more than one occasion. My body took a battering but it was a calculated battering because as the months went by I found myself getting stronger and stronger. Confidence was sky high, I knew I could nail a good one. However 10 days before the marathon, in what was to be the last session of significance on the program I was following(daniels)I strained my right calf muscle. Nothing major but enough to concern me. Got it treated and didnt run for 5 days, felt it get better so I was back in the game, albeit a bit concerned about whether or not senor calf would hold up.

Anyway enough waffling, its all about the racing. Lined up alongside heffsarmy and off we went. Crusing along at a very very conmfortable pace. After the torture I'd put myself through in training this felt like jogging. Went through 5 miles in 30mins dead so all was going great. The calf was behaving itself and I was starting to think that this was gonna be a great day. But as we headed out of the park through teh chapleizod gate my hamstring gave me a jolt. I thought nothing of it, **** like that always happens to me in races or training. But the hammer started to tighten as time went by. Went through 10 miles in 59xx so all still fine. Felt great, was straining at the lead to let it rip, but I held back and bided my time like I said I would. Pain in the hammer didnt get any worse so I thought I'd gotten away with it, so now I could forget about it and concentrate on racing. We made the turn onto the crumlin road which is a tough drag, but I felt fine. Heff was alongside me still and seemed to be crusing too. We were churning out a nice clip on this stretch, passing a fair few runners as we went along. We were catching those that had set off too fast at the begining and all was looking good. But then as we came down the hill towards the turn left that led up towards superquinn(halfway)the hammer gave out on me. Literally I went from running at 5:50 pace to hobbling in a matter of yards. I couldnt believe it, no way could this happen. So I ignored it as best as I could hoping it would just go away and tried to continue on. I got to the halfway mark and I corssed it in 78 mins but I had to pull off the road as my hammer was gone completely. Vinney muulvey, fair play to him, came running over to me and tried to help me out. I got tried to get going again but I made it to the walkinstown roudabout and that was it, hammer was screaming at me and I couldnt run, had to step off the road again but this time I knew it was game over. My mate was there at the roundabout so he helped me to his car and gave me a lift home. I went back in to town to collect my gear and arrived just in time to see the sub 3 hour lads come through. It was hilarious. I've never been on the other side of a marathon, watching form the sidelines so it was an experience. There were guys coming in and they'd literally stop dead with 250m to go!! I couldnt beleive it, how could that happen???? One guy stopped and everybody shouted at him, there was a dude with a bullhorn and everything trying to get him going again. And he did get going again, which was greeted with a massive roar from the crowd. It was inspirational stuff.......but then he collapsed in a heap after shuffling about 10meters. Cue stunned silence from crowd.
Saw the roadrunner come through with a big ass sub 3:00 baloon stuck to his hand. He seemed to be pretty much on his own but then a few lads who looked in an absolute jock came trailing in his wake. Great stuff.

Like I said Im still in shock about the injury. Stuff like that happens to other people. I never thought I would have to pull out of a marathon. Its my worst nightmare come true. Which I suppose is a good thing, I mean if you experience your worst fear then theres nothing to be afraid of. Anyway I went to the physio and the official diagnosis is a grade II semitendonosis strain. He reckons I'll be back running in 2-3weeks, which isnt bad at all. But its not the physical scars Im worried about..........I'll go again next year, and I'll keep going until I get what I want from that marathon, no two ways about it. But its a bitter pill to swallow, I put my heart and soul into trainning for that race and to have something as random as my hammer go is just cruel. But I suppose thats life, it can be cruel and random and all you can do is pick yourself up and go again.

I have to say a few words about the guy I trained with, Phil kilgannon. I'll try not get overly sentimental, but Phil is probably the most decent, most honest and honourable bloke I've ever had the privilage of knowing. Men like him are very few and far between. I can honestly say that if I ever had to go into battle he would be the guy I'd want at my side. It was an honour. Cheers dude.

and he ran 2:33, not bad at all, unlucky tunguska but love the positivity.

Thanks for posting that, that really makes me feel good now. When I crossed the line with only a handful of guys around me, I wasn't sure if I had provided any real help to anyone.

    Thank you, very much appreciated.

Thomas you, and the other pacers, were a massive help to me also.
For the last 4 miles all I saw were those yellow balloons. There's no way I would have broken 3.30 otherwise. I shook your hand at the finish but thanks again. Sorry I didn't make it to the pub to buy you all a pint.

First marathon, ran 3.27, no way without the pacers... I ran at about 3.20 pace til the half way mark, but found crumlin to terenure fierce tough. I was caught by the first 3.30 pacer at about terenure and watched them go ahead, but I dug in so much and ran with them until the N11. I knew the lungs would hold up but just hoped the legs would keep ticking over, anyway I pushed hard and made it home. If I was depending on the watch and no pacer or balloon or any sort of marker, there's no way I would have been able to focus enough to get home under 3.30. So thanks a load. I'm guessing it TBFubendorfer, i was talking to you briefly in milltown, black cap red vest.

I was debating or not to start in the 3.15 or 3.30 group at the start line. I signed up for the 2.45 - 3.30 thinking that they all started at the same time, I didn't realise that 3.30 started 5 mins after. I knew I would need a pacer, and figured that if I dropped behind 3.15, and was caught by the 3.30, I'd have lost 15+5 minutes, so went with 3.30 - pity the ranking isn't based on RealTime but it's not the end of the world. Onwards and upwards...
