    what a load of sh*t.

just because you're mates with a few Fair City actors you think you're superior to the rest of us.

Said actors who are knobs in real life

Jimmy - already gone there, a scumbag
    Carol - lying bitch
    Rita - a pig
Lana - most annoying person ever

I know none of these people but why aren't they in the tabloids????

So why not take a good look at the production elements on this show and criticize them...

Right so it's the lack of good writing/directors/make-up artists who make the actors wooden and not in any way believable? Sorry but that is completely rubbish. Those things certainly add to the overall crapness but you can't blame those things for the complete lack of acting ability many of them show.

Then of course there are the odd few who actually are decent enough actors despite the things you listed, such as Niamh, Keith, Jo, Heather and Renee. If they can do why can't the rest of them if they are so talented?

    Edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mt9LWqwqd0U&feature=related LOL!

It's pretty obvious even reading the posts here that what's wrong is the quality control. Some of the acting is brilliant, some of it are lousy. Some of the dialogue is brilliant, and some of it is a slow-motion car crash. I presume the same goes for lighting, make-up, and all the other things I know nothing about.

If it was always as good as it has been for the last couple of weeks, I would call myself a Fair City fan. Is there even such a thing? Look at the title of this thread for example. When you tell someone you watch the programme, they look at you as if you escaped from somewhere. Then they check it out on one of the bad nights, and you know you look like an idiot for recommending it.

This is the case with most Prime Time soap operas. We have a tendancy to be down on Fair City without really looking at the unbelieveable story lines of Emmerdale, the down right depressing Eastenders and the dragged out Corronation Street (3 days for one character to tell her partner that she lost their baby, they played it for "dramatic effect").

All soaps have bad actors, some bad make up and some terrible storyline. Generally it not some of the time it is most of the time.

Ros Na Run is a far better soap but some of the acting in that in resent years has a lot to be desired.

I think she's quite good (and I love that ad she's in where she's in the family sports day!)

Niamh's younger sister is woeful though. I'm mesmerized by the amount of head-bobbing she does when she's talking. Almost as captivating as Ursula's ears and Leo's ill-timed hand movements.

I think it should be scrapped and all the actors should be sold as slave labour, they're all brutal!!! Im ashamed to say my aunt was in it a few years back.

I know of someone who was in Fair City for a while. They don't do an awful lot of rehearsing from what I've heard. As long as you can say your lines and not bump into the furniture, it'll be broadcast. Some actors won't appear in the show because it'll be a blot on their CV rather than something to further their careers. Funny that!

I just cant take Fair City at all seriously when there is an actor that is as dire as the one who plays Leo. He is like the irish equivalant of the guy who plays Dev in Corrie but a lot lot worse.

What's wrong with Mags? She's slurring her words for a long time now and it was very noticable tonight. Stroke?

I have been informed that her grandson asked about her slurring, Charlie informed him that she is having trouble with her teeth.

Hard hitting social realism hits Fair City. Of course they are only copying Corronation Street's storyline about Deirdre breaking her Glasses.

In fairness, both storylines are obviously derived from that devastating moment in King Lear when Edgar bangs his thumbnail on the door-post and it goes a bit black.

What were the producers thinking with ther Floyd and Heather story-line? Was it actually needed? Did it effect their ratings at all i wonder  (good or bad)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

    Tuesday 512,000
    Thursday 459,000
    Wednesday 476,000
    Sunday 425,000

If it had anything to do with the Floyd and Heather storyline, they kept their veiwers for the summer months. 512,000 viewers is excellent for July.

    EastEnders top Episode had 408,000
Corronation Street top Episode had 422,000
    Emmerdale's top episode had 253,000
    Home And Away had 165,000

Weekending the 13/07/2008, when did Floyd die?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,894 ✭✭✭Chinafoot

Ok now I havent seen it in a little while but where the hell did Rory reappear from?! Himself and Carol are still going out? Or did they get back together? I'm incredibly confused!

What about joe (lookit) Durmetts wife? She is forever whinging and moaning about silly things. Instead of taking her to the pub to try and stop her whinging he should take her to bed and give her a good hard riding to shut her up.

maybe it has something to do with the times they are on,the later the show the more viewers they get

Perhaps but I haven't included BBC1's or UTV's viewership for Emmerdale, Coronation St., Or EastEnders. (50,000 to 120,000 extra viewers).

Fair City is indeed the biggest heap of crap ever and no other country would have the cheek to broadcast it.
But it is very very unintentionally funny. They are probably the worst actors ever (most of them having been knocking around RTE for ever appearing in every piece of crap ever produced ) they over act everything, the walls shake when doors are closed. Sum of the funniest are the two police men who decided in order to be like real policmen they should squint all the time. I saw someone saying about Ritas bad acting. If you look closely you will realise she appears to be reading her lines over the shoulder of the person she is talking to, pure class. I agree Ursula falling down the stairs was hillarious but my fave scene was when Harry Molloy was killed after being hit with what appeared to be a twig. My big question is why does Bella have a limp is draging his hip, prostate, bladder???

Has anyone ever seen the Fairly ****ty crowd being interviewed the guy that plays Bella always defends it to the last.

Do people have a favourite character?

Just a little correction to your post. We didn't see Harry Molloy's death, he commit suicide in Cork while on bail for murdering the young lad who had the 'E' that his daughter took and the actor that plays Bella had a hip replacement a couple of years ago and it was written in as a prostate story line! I don't watch Fair City that often, but there was nothing else on last night and I was wondering, is Suzanne or the actress who plays her pregnant? She deffo looked it when herself and Damien were talking to Mike outside the Bistro.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,651 ✭✭✭Captain Slow IRL

I was fortunate enough to watch it last night, it has to be one of the funniest soaps I've ever watched. (hearing Daniel O'Donnell on about it on the Ian Dempsey breakfast show had me actually wanting to see an episode of it!)

Why do they have to pick the ugliest women in Dublin to star in it?

    Yeah I thought that too!
I thought it was hilarious when Geraldine smashed up the Bistro- you see her smash some crockery and wreck a painting and then Mikes told it's over 40,000 Euro worth of damage?!

Haha - yer wan in the cafe/pub is a bit of a cnut, I was creaming myself when the guy broke it off with her

"Get me an ashtray.........NOW" And the 2 gobsheens went scampering!

How many years have Geraldine and Mike been together? Two black sacks doesn't say much does it, were we meant to believe that all her stuff and Eoins were in them!

Ah that explains Bellas limp! It must have been sum other time Harry was beaten up that I remember. The guy who used to play the son of the Odanzie family was in Mamma Mia, for sum there seems to be life after f.city. As for the ugliest women surely Susanne would have to win that with her abnormal ammount of teeth :p

Stupid statement. all Soap Operas are bad, dreadful etc and English Television is over run by them, they are the reason the are very few good English Drama's any more. Yes, The Bill, Holby City, Casulty, Heart Beat, The Royal are all soap operas. English drama used to be good until they started going over board on soap.

I don't watch it normally. The last time I watched it Delores was taking over the whole show and God was she boring. She was so boring that I ended up nicknaming her De bore us. It's no wonder Harry comitted suicide.

Though I'm not a dedidcated viewer I do think Cornataion Street is quite a good show, well written and acted. The other soaps aren't half bad either. None of them are as pathetic a fair city the difference may be employing people who can act.

It might have been a few years ago but all of the soaps suffer because they are on 24/7. There are times where corronation street is just painting by numbers where scripts are put together just to make a new episode.

Fair City is one thing but compared to Shortland Street, the kiwi hospital "drama" RTE also screen its like The Royal Shakespere Company.Recently my missus text me to say a dog had been knocked down in that days episode and...the dogs acting was the stand out.

Is it not the purpose of a script to make an episode? As for shortland street I've watched it a few times and it is a real gem in the vein of fair city.

Shortland Street is compulsive because its so bad.Watch one episode and you can nail the plot lines for the next month.Every so often people start speaking Maori and everyone knows whats being said even the non-Maori characters. Its brilliant stuff.

That's a bit rasist New Zealanders learn Maori in school. Tá beagnach gealige ar gach duine i Éire, agus fios ag gach duine beagnach gealige. Nach bhfuil me cheart? (Ta bron orm don mo gealige!!!! L? agus G?). But I will take northers out of that statement. Bilingualism!!!!!

A good story coming from a script would be nice. You cann't just film people doing nothing (oh wait Big Brother :( )

Soap Operas are dreadful no matter who makes them, they are compulsive by their nature. I could even get trapped into watching EastEnders only that show makes me vomit.

I am not suggesting that any soap is better then any other soap. I just have issues with EastEnders in the same way many people have issues with Fair City. But I could watch an episode of Fair City or Shortland Street long before an episode of EastEnders.

Yeah I think that Today FM have given Fair City an audience because of "Daniel O'Donnell's" obsession with Fair City. I think they may have said this on the show, I haven't been listening in a while.
