A New Year but alas it's not yet improving on last year. Indeed it has rapidly moved in the other direction

Here's hoping they can get that vaccine programme rapidly expanded

    Mod warnings:
    1. Please interact in a civil manner
    2. Do not tell others what to do, or what to post
    3. It is against site rules to seek or offer any medical advice. Please do not post here about your symptoms asking what to do. Contact your doctor by telephone and they can advise you as appropriate
    4. If you have a problem with a post report it and leave the modding to the mods

    In terms of thread content:
    • Treat everything you read here with caution. Anything posted is from an anonymous internet poster. You cannot assume anyone has any "specialist" knowledge whatever they claim
    • Statistics are important to some (and I personally pay a lot of attention to them), but they are of very little use to anyone who is already caught up in this, or indeed knows of people who are caught up
    • Whatever your own views are please recognise others are entitled to different views., Even if at different extremes please do not try and repeatedly ram your views down the throats of those who have differing views
    • Cut out any cover-up/conspiracy stuff. If you have a reliable source quote it (not just their words but provide a link to a reliable source) - otherwise your claims carry little if any weight. If you wish to discuss conspiracy theories we have a dedicated forum for that and it’s not this one
    • If the likes of the HSE have a verified Twitter account we can assume what they post is accurate. Randomers on here or elsewhere cannot be considered "official" or "reliable" sources
    • If people wish to flout the restriction rules that is up to them. They cannot complain at the consequences, be that direct action from the authorities, exposure in Social Media (not here) or being shunned by locals, friends, family etc. If they post about it here, or encourage others to flout the rules, trying to appear macho, or thinking they are above the rules or simply being a smart arse, posting privileges will be removed
    • If you don't want to see discussion about Trump perhaps stay clear of this thread between the hours of 22:00 and 01:00. This is a thread for "breaking news" so please do not expect posters to discuss things happening "now" in other threads. It's not discouraged but equally posters expect to discuss such issues in this thread (added 14/04/20)
    • There is absolutely no good reason top try and forecast or predict daily numbers, so do not do so

All threadbans carry over, but we will reconsider if anyone wishes to discuss it further via PM

I suspect that all hospitals will be in surge by the weekend.

That's not good at all. Will this wave cripple the health service?

I rarely get to do this, but I found some good news.
Our google mobility data suggests that from Christmas Day onwards, the Irish people have copped on and realised how serious this is and from then on we increasingly altered our behaviour.

We haven't seen a dislocation from normality like this since March. I can say with some confidence now that any restrictions applied should work well and maybe even kick in a little earlier than restrictions usually would.

The private hospitals are on board now for capacity

We will have a scary 2 to 3 weeks and it will be absolutely awful for health staff on the frontline

Then hopefully it will start to.drop

Stay calm and stay at home, get shopping delivered.

I do realise that not everyone can stay at home but it will help those who have to.

Time for solidarity is now. No messing.

22 ICU beds left is grim. Do private hospitals have many ICU beds?

Presume surge capacity would have to be activated now? Any idea what it would go up to? Guess staff would be taken from others to staff these beds too so will have knock on impacts.

    Dear God the hospital numbers.
Increase of 103 hospitalised in 24 hour period from 8pm last night to 8pm tonight.

Increases in almost all hospitals 26/29 except Letterkenny which has decreased by 4. Donegal likes to be different.

Biggest jump is in Galway. Increased there from 47 to 67 in 24 hours. CUH 64 to 78 and Mercy 14 to 22.

It's very good. Sometimes a longer post doesn't receive the thanks it should. People sometimes go 'ahh too long'.

Think public beds can go up.to 350 ICU beds

If they moved non COVID ICU patients to private hospitals that would free up a fair few beds

IcU in April peaked at 160 iirc

Think ICU beds are not just beds but staff. If the staff are not available to work the 'bed' is not an ICU bed

It's not just the hospitals or beds though, staff is becoming s real issue, CUH are down 100 at the moment I believe

Is there a way to get a breakdown of specific regions within a county on the Covid data hub?

Most of us will get through it unscathed
Some of us will have long lasting effects
A lot of us will die

People on these threads wrongly only focus on the first and third outcomes

Yep ICU beds have a 1:1 nurse ratio and the nurse must be ICU and ventilator trained.
