Yes I was going to say that too. UK and Irish approach are just a difference of semantics. In fairness the "lockdown" China achieved is hardly possible elsewhere, so really any other place is looking at semi-controlled spread and hoping for the best. UBI - to reiterate - might enable significant lockdown a la China. Otherwise us goofs trying to cling to jobs are going to inevitably catch and spread it.

IMHO the economic impacts of this will make the 2008 financial crisis look like a minor blip.

And despite this having it's origins in China, I don't think they will be too badly affected by it in the long run economically!

If this hits the USA hard, you could see a very different world with China and possibly Russia taking over! Say what you want about the yanks, but that's a scary prospect.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I can understand why some people think this thing was deliberately released on us.

Comes from a hse worker believe what u will but its certainly facts, young lad in isolation in drogheda hospital so much for it only gets the old.
Nobody said the young can't catch it. It is predominantly a risk to the old and the very old, kids are barely touched and there will of course be those in the U65s as well. The median age of the severe cases is very high everywhere and in general in other age groups just mild cases.

I honestly didn't hear Leo say that 50% of the population will get it? As for the 15,000 cases, that is just an existing situation - 15k will diagnosed by the end of the month because 15k have it now. It is at that point (in two weeks time) that we are hoping the current measures will kick in. My reading of the presser is that at the 15k point we are hoping the upward curve will move a little flatter...

He said it was a possibility. He didn't promise it.

Because the UK put no restrictions whatsoever so now it's rampant and they don't even know how rampant. We put measures in place to stop exponential growth like closing schools and sports events. They were already one week ahead of us too.
thats f all measures, in fairness, kids still out, people out on the streets shops etc, work in factories never stops. and no we dont have any accurate or even remotely close figures just speculation, so UK is doing no worse then here, some might imagine its doing something but reality is as some understand we all get it, and life moves on.since in terms of ICU beds and ventilators means one is **** out of luck and prob wont make it reality most cant twist their heads around, so better herd immunity and have rough estimate then have this go on forever every time new cases spark. as testing is useless if many cases dont show symptoms or are so minor that most ignore them.

Lose your job in UK you get £94 (€103).

    Ireland €203.

We often criticise our welfare state (like myself) but at times like this it's invaluable. There will be consequences down the line in terms of tax increases but I don't mind contributing to those who will and have had their livelyhoods taken from them for the good of the rest of us.

I think the government have done a great job so far.

I know we will pay for it in the long term but people need some sense of security and reassurance at this scary time.

Once the fear wears off community spirit will hopefully come out running, you can already see it with plenty of initiatives and volunteers nationwide.

I hope we continue to care about each other when things get tougher in the coming weeks because the alternative isn't pretty.

You can't institute contact tracing until you have a case. We hopped on the tracing but there were too many independent cases popping up. Doesn't mean it was particularly ****ed, in other types of outbreak it would've contributed to snuffing it out, but this bugger is airborne and hot contagious. So we move on to the next measure.

It's a waste of time if they don't release to the public where each case was found. East of the country, south. ****e

So the public can do what? Flee the village of ballygobackwards or lynch whoever is suspected of having it? With hazmat suits of course.

I had a look at the very first thread on the corona virus and read posts on the first few pages.
