Useful bits and pieces of info for Enigma2

The Spark Image on these boxes have limitations and so, a proper Linux Based firmware seems to provide more possibilities and it could be said, has been supported better than Spark.

    Some reasons for considering Enigma
The Spark code is being updated now and again with features being added gradually.

    Satellite 7 day EPG
    Recording by programme name
Recording from both Terrestrial and Sat simultaneously
FF and Rew working without freezing
Resume playback from last point watched
Series Link (sort of - using an Auto Timer plugin) - See below
Streaming of TV channels to both PC's, laptops, phones
Program the Timer when out and about with an Android Phone App

    And then there's CCCam / C-Line compatibility !!!

Full Setup Guide in Post #2

    http://linuxsat-support.com/amiko-alien-2-images-e2-spark/

    CoolTVGuide
Allows for a combined Terrestrial and Satellite EPG

    AutoTimer Plugin
Allows the box to search the EPG, both Terrestrial and Satellite, for a programme name, within any timespan, and automatically add it to the Timer for recording.

    Full Setup Guide by PogMoThoin

Full credit to PogMoThoin for this excellent write up which many users have used to successfully setup their Spark boxes with Enigma2
    PogMoThoin wrote: »
For this guide I'm assuming you have basic FTP knowledge, if you haven't I suggest you Google or get the help of someone who does.

First of all, go to Menu-->Spark-->Upgrade Software. Do a downgrade to 1.2.51 E2 Boot Upgrade. You can flash back to the latest Spark later if you wish to continue using Spark.

    2012-12-31151443_zps76102288.jpg

Then you need to install the e2upgrade plugin, it's available here in this pack. Extract the plugin to your desktop and use Filezilla to connect to your box and copy both the bin and keys folders to the /root/plugin/var directory (overwrite). You'll find the IP of your box under System-->Net setting-->ipconfig, the default FTP login on Spark is username "root", password: "root".

    ftp_zps187a5d46.gif

Grab the Enigma image and copy the Enigma2 folder to the root of a usb key, the enigma2 folder should contain 2 single files.

Reboot the box with the USB inserted then go to plugins and enable the e2upgrade plugin. You will see a Start OSD option with the red button (you may need a reboot after enabling the plugin if you don't see it at first), select this and navigate to the enigma2 folder on your Usb and you will see an upgrade Enigma2 option on the red button.

    2012-12-31151627_zps86e9c58d.jpg

Next we set the box to boot to Enigma, there is a simple way to do this in the settings menu, menu-->system-->factory default-->Boot to E2. Also note that holding the ok button on the box for a few seconds while toggling on the power switch at the rear to boot the box brings up a boot menu where you can use the arrow up and down keys to swap between E2 and Spark using OK to select.

The default HDMU E2 image does not have 28.2e in it's satellites.xml, we will need to upload a new one that does. You can grab mine from here or make your own from here. You will need to FTP that to /etc/enigma2. The FTP IP address should be the same but the login is now username "root", password "HDMU". You will need to reboot the box after for the satellites.xml to be read

This part of the guide ramps up a pace, I couldn't be arsed doing step by step, therefore I'm assuming people are tech savvy and are comfortable with FTP and Putty.

Jump through the configuration, but just go as far as getting the network setup, you quit after that, we'll setup the tuners and scan later.

    Skin
First things first, we want to get rid of the horrible Christmas theme, menu-->plugins then press the green button to open a download menu where you can download lots of stuff. Get a bootlogo and a skin. Once downloaded to enable the skin go back to menu-->Setup-->System-->Skin. PLI HD is the nicest, but there are plenty of others to choose from.

    Remove crap Bouquets
Now to delete the default bouquets, you can easily delete them on the box or use DreamBoxEdit, set it up with the FTP info, IP, username and password. To do it on the box, press OK to bring up the channel selection (it will be blank), blue for favourites, then by highlighting and pressing menu you have a remove bouquet entry option. I deleted all bouquets except Favourites (TV) before I did a scan.

    Configure Tuners and Scan
Next we will setup the tuners. To do this we go to setup-->service searching-->tuner configuration. Set Tuner A to Europe DVB-T frequencies. I have an inline UHF amplifier so I enable power for that. Setup the satellite tuner B like in the images below, Tuner C gets set to "Equal to Tuner B". Setting the satellite tuner to clear before scan will remove all the channels already stored but not working.

    2012-12-31165729_zps6d5eb03f.jpg

    Autobouquets
After a full scan it's time for autobouquets.
    • Extract dvbsnoop from zip file and ftp across to /usr/bin change permissions for this file to 777
    • Extract autobouquets.zip and ftp the directory Autobouquets to /usr/lib/enigma2/python/Plugins/Extensions/
    • Change permissions of the autobouquets_e2.sh file in the Autobouquets directory to 755
    • Then restart Enigma2 and then go to Plugins and you should see Autobouquets installed. Run autobouquets and it will create lots of bouquets of channels in the same order as Sky UK, it will take 10-15 mins.
    dvbsnoop
    autobouquets

    Picons
Here is a complete pack of decent picons, I downloaded a nice pack online and used a software to make the few that are missing and added terrestrial ones. Extract the picon folder to /usr/local/share/enigma2

    Storage
Next for the storage, Plug in an NTFS or FAT32 formatted usb drive or key then Telnet into the box using Putty and run the following commands to format it to ext3 and mount it:
    mkfs.ext3 -L RECORD /dev/sda1
    cd /autofs/sda1
    mkdir movie

    CrossEPG
You will find CrossEPG in the plugins download section. I find that it works fine with OpenTV enabled for the 28.2 satellite but there is a bug I listed in an earlier post, once configured to store on the drive we added above don't open configure again or it will change the path to local flash and cause the box to get laggy. I've it set to download daily at 9.00AM which works fine as long as you don't open configure. You can check that it's set correctly by viewing the crossepg.config in /var/crossepg/, the first line should read db_root=/media/hdd/crossepg

Other Plugins to check out are Cool TV Guide and Autotimers (series link)

That's basically it, let me know if you find any mistakes

I've added some screenshots of it all setup. (Don't ask how I got Sky channels working, I will not answer, not even to pms)

    Hi to All.
First big big thank you championc, you post help me a lot installing enigma 2 to my amiko alien 2 triple.
Following you post I came to satellite scan, and here I have a question
How I can setup my system to scan multiple satellite
My system is like that I have 2 satellite dishes 1 with 2 lnb for (thor & sirius) and the second has 5 lnb (28, 23, 19, 16, 4.8)
all are connected to Centauri 8x1 DiSEqC Switch then from there only one cable is connected to receiver, and then loopthrough to second dvb-s tuner
In advance setup third line LNB I should put 1 lnb or 7 as I have myself
I enable DiSEqC mode to version 1.1
    Could you explain please.
    Thank you.

First of all, the credit should go to PogMoThoin. I just copied the details out of the big Alien2 thread because the other thread is mixed with Spark and Enigma2 talk.

I am no expert but I think Pog at one stage confirmed to someone that they cannot use DiSEqC currently with the HDMU image or the box will crash. - but hopefully someone more qualified that me (or someone with a similar setup as you) will be able to confirm what is and isn't possible.

First you will need to update satellite.xml so you will have access to all satellites, assuming you are using HDMU image. The xml i posted here:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056707402&page=37

Post 551 has all satellites you need. When you have this done, in satellite config, go to advanced and you will find all your required satellites there. HDMU image works perfectly in mode version 1.1. I have 39e, 28e, 23.5, 19e, 16e, 13e and 9e working fine on HDMU image.
For each tuner the satellite at input 1 on your Diseqc will be lnb 1, Sat at input 2 will be lnb 2 and so on....

The Amiko Alien 2 has caught my interest. I've played around with the DM500s. Went thru steep learning curve to get it up & running but pretty much forgotten it at this stage.
Is the Amiko similar in setting up to the DM500s?
What is the difference between Enigma2 and Openpli for this box?
Is it easy to set up the bouquets? Can these be downloaded from net?
Would it be a good replacement for the sky+ SD box? (Use the skycard in the Amiko. And have a mixture of pay in SD & the freeview HD channels.)
How good is the EPG? Does it show a mixture of the 3 tuners or do you have to switch between tuners for their EPGs?
How does the EPG/recording functions etc. rate against the Sky+ SD box?
Is the software robust? Once it's set-up is there much tweaking or having to reflash memory to keep it up & running properly.
Does the remote work properly? (my dm500 has a bit of a mind of it's own sometimes)
Sorry for the silly questions, but looks like it would cost the cuts of 300E between box & decent size Harddrive to get going. Don't want to fork out that sort of money & discover it's not fit for purpose.

CoolTVGuide ver 6.4.0 (stops the Popup window from 6.0.3)

Download and unzip the following to your PC - https://www.box.com/s/8a7kukqe0cbz2ng0og9f

Use Filezilla or whatever FTP client you like and copy the contents of the ZIP file over the /usr/lib/enigma2/python/ directory.

    Once done, reboot the box

    Folks,
anyone using one of these receivers with a wifi ethernet bridge?

I tried to use a Netgear WNCE2001 Ethernet bridge on my Alien2. It partially works in that I can access the web interface from the LAN, telnet in, stream from a channel using VLC or the Dreamdroid android app.

But the receiver side access is losing ACK packets back. So it can ping some but not all of the LAN hosts. Any attempt to ping external Internet addresses fails.. also it cannot update itself or download plugins. While it can ping my living room dreambox, telnet in etc, it never managed to mount the HDD share. The network browser saw the host, share and let me set up the share.. but it never seemingly mounted it.

If I wire the receiver directly to the router, it works fine.. all internal hosts can be pinged and Internet access works fine. I've ran wireshark tracing on the LAN between the router and UPC modem. You can see the ping requests go out and ACKs come back. But they never make it to the Alien2. I've also managed to replicate the issue on one of two laptops I have. so I'm as positive as I can be that this is a compliance glitch on the bridge rather than some setting on the receiver. It is running the latest firmware and messed around with older versions and got the same results.

So alas.. the bridge goes back to Currys tomorrow.. but I was hoping someone can confirm they got another make/model to work with the Alien2. It would even more puzzling if someone reported the same bridge was working fine for them.

    Update..
I switched the bridge for a newer model at Curry's but the same issue was there. So after some messing around, I managed to get it to work by removing the static DHCP entry for the Alien2 and also for the other laptop that wasn't working. Whatever the DHCP lease has for these static IPs, it causes the bridge to mess things up. So I just configured the Alien2 with a fixed IP and now its all working. My share is mounting.

Just some queries from a dreambox user now using one of these boxes..

    1) On my dreambox remote, I have a PVR button that brings me straight to the recordings. On the Alien2, I've had to use the folders button which launches this HDMU Music, Video media app. Is that the way it is or can I get the normal Enigma2 PVR interface.

    2) I could swear that the OpenPLI theme is slower than the stock HDMU image theme.. I keep seeing the spinner when transitioning between channels etc. When I switch back to the stock theme, it feels a lot more responsive.. anyone confirm the same observation and possibly know why this is the case?

    3) In terms of flashing the receiver, by following PogMoThoins guide, I could never the red button start OSD to do anything where you try to use the E2 plugin (I think one other use reported this same issue). I tried a variation of 4 USB sticks, all correctly formatted as FAT32 and with the correct MBR partition tables.. each time, the red button did nothing at all when pressed. I ended up flashing by rebooting the receiver, selecting Enigma2 (down), Factory reset (right) and pressing OK with the USB drive in the rear port. This works but I can't successfully flash the latest image. The most recent one I could get to work was
    HDMU_10780_E2_spark7162_211_git_5385_nodebug_Diff0_gst_Flash

    the two newer images..
    HDMU_10846_E2_spark7162_211_git_5400_nodebug_Diff0_gst_Flash
    HDMU_10847_E2_spark7162_211_git_5410_nodebug_Diff0_gst_Flash
... both failed. The flashing would begin.. "U LD" flashing on/off and Exxx bit appearing every so often. But it would eventually hang with "U LD" on permanently. I also noticed that the size of the enigma2 folder is much larger for these newer images. The 5385 one that is working is ~50Mb. the latter two images are 60Mb and 127Mb

Has anyone managed to get these newer images to flash?

Here are two good plugins for the Alien 2/Triplex.

Rat's Bouquets allows you to download regularly updated bouquets for 28e off a server and load them onto your box, n.b. it overwrites the existing bouquets .
I prefer this plugin to Autobouquets as it groups the +1 channels with the parent channels and the channel order is alot better.
    Give it a go.

    Rat's Bouquets Plugin

The second plugin is Rat's Picon Plugin
This will locate the picon folder on your receiver and update them to the newest set for 28e,it wont overwrite plugins for other satellites.

    Rat's Picons Plugin

Just extract both zip files and ftp to the corresponding folder on your receiver.

All credit goes to Rat on http://www.digitalworldz.co.uk

^^That work with all enigma images?

Seems to work with a lot them, couldn't say if it works on every one as I haven't tried. Some images don't handle certain plugins so well.

Does anybody know if there are any Spark Plugins that are similar to IPTV or TSMedia?

Failing that how do I find and add channels to the Web TV section on Spark?

    Thanks

There isn't really anything similar on Spark to TSMedia, the built in SuperIPTV will be close to it for sport, but it will be (is) subscription based.

    For Web TV, you can try loading on the following file;

    Web TV

Just unzip and place folder on a USB, go to Web TV on the box and press the folder button on the remote to load the xml file. I'm sure some of channels don't work on it anymore as it's quite old but it gives you an idea.
