As suggested in another thread, since questions on Classic 911's come up so often, I thought I'd start a thread to keep all discussion in the one place, with links to many of the past threads, links, and any other info and experience from 911 owners.

Nice one! I've updated the forum charter to include a link to your 911 thread!

Well, I finally got my car :D so many months coming together but finally I took delivery last week. As requested in another thread, here are a few photos and some detail on the process for those interested.

She is a 1977 911 "Carrera 3.0" Targa - this is a different car to the very well known 911SC - mine is much more rare so I'm delighted to have been so lucky to find a good one. Have a look at www.911carrera3.com - a site I put together with all the info I gathered while doing all my research on these cars.

She's in great nick, a lot of work was done to get rid of the rust in the kidney bowls and the front wings. Loads of work on the engine was done, lots of little bits and bobs replaced. 92k on the clock but these engines are bullet proof if looked after. The sound of the flax six is fantastic and the way she feels on the road is so unique. No power steering but you really don't miss it at all. The gearbox is a lot to get used you - you almost have to 'learn' to drive this car - taking it very easy in the gearchanges - you certainly don't thrash these around. Gearbox is a little clunky - the 915 gearboxes are known for this - but I have just ordered one of these which seems to get great reviews so I cannot wait to get it fitted.

The engine is very smooth and pulls from 1500rpm no problem so town driving is fine - the clutch is not nearly as heavy as I was expecting. Take it over 3000rpm and she pulls like a train. Had a lovely spin in wicklow and it was beautiful driving the backroads. The seats are very comfy and the driving position is strange but great when you get used to it - the peddles in these old 911's are are off to the left so you kinda sit slightly askew - was only weird for the first few mins though. Targas are known for leaking, mine has not yet but there are some gaps which I'm getting sorted asap. The brakes took some getting used to, felt rubbish at first but its just so different to a modern car, you just need to give it some muscle and then its grand.

She's not great on the juice but I never expected that. I'm told I'll get about 22mpg normally but maybe 18mpg when driving hard. It's a killer with the rising petrol prices, however one of the main reasons I bought this car was for financial reasons. Tax is €55, insurance is €450 (as my main driver - with First Direct) and it's not going to depreciate - actually it should appreciate in the long run. I worked out my last car cost me about 5k per year to run including tax, insurance, depreciation and NCT. This will only cost me a fraction of that. So not only is it a more sensible decision in the long run money wise than spending the same amount of money on a bmw or whatever, but you get to drive a seriously cool car in the meantime too!

So that's about it, really happy overall. She's in getting a few little bits finished off now and I'm really looking forward to a few nice summer days when I can take her top off!

Great idea having a 911 thread with links!

    Zascar,
Lovely 911! best of luck with it!
However, may I suggest that you fit a neat/appropriate set of reg plates? It will change and smarten up the whole look of the car. I would suggest 'large digit' plates like in the pics attached (the Escort has plastic plates). Just my 2c.

+1000 on Bryan Kane, made a great job of my 968.

I'd also add Jon Miller, of www.classiccarworkshop.ie as great with 911's - does a lot of the Club guys' stuff - and but he too did a great job on my manual 968.

    Lightning....whaddyamean, 'fake' ? ! Waterpumpers Rule ! :)

Thanks Galwaytt - yes Jon Miller actually did the original bodywork on my car, the kidney bowls and front wings etc - he's a bit far away though - Co. Clare!

I have my car in with my local mechanic right now - I had a problem with the voltage regulator and the fuel guage/sender which has all been fixed now so I'm getting it back on Friday. There are a few other minor things that I might drop in to a few of the guys listed above and see what needs doing. I have a slight gap in the drivers side of the targa, it may just be door realignment or I may need a new seal. I've also just taken delivery of a new shifter coupler - which apparently when fitted along with new bushes in the shifter makes a huge difference to the gearshift. These 915 gearboxes are known for being a bit sloppy but this tightens them right back up! Can't wait to see the difference!
