UK Outlook for Saturday 18 Dec 2010 to Saturday 1 Jan 2011:

For the remainder of December and into the start of the New Year, temperatures look set to remain well below average for much of the UK, with often widespread frost and ice. Precipitation amounts are expected to be generally around average for many, with further snowfall a distinct possibility in some places. However, western parts of the UK may see more in the way of drier weather. Amounts of sunshine should be around or slightly above average for many.

    Have you got a link?

Sorry, no link. He was just being interviewed as part of an article on the bad weather in the UK on the BBC News channel. It may be on again at 12.30am or 1am.

EDIT: thanks to Musicman2000. Link posted above.

There was an interview with John Hammond (one the weather forecasters on the BBC) on the BBC News channel. He said there was no indication whatsoever of a return to an Atlantic westerly regime and even hinted at current conditions (blocking anti-cyclone setup) lasting into the new year!

The problem is mainland UK has different weather to what we have here in Ireland. We have that huge electric blanket called the Atlantic next to us, The UK has the fridge/freezer of mainland Europe next to them!!

That is true, but the outlook doesn't mention milder conditons in the west or southwest UK, and if it's still cold there then there is a good chance there isn't much of an Atlantic theme going on.

The East of Ireland is different again, I suppose in terms of weather we are kind of a half way house between what the Uk get and what the West of Ireland gets. For the next week we are due to remain considerably colder than the west of Ireland with temperatures similar to western Uk, altho we will see very little if any snow.

I must say the uk met office outlook has been spot on so far since this cold period started.
They flagged this cold outbreak well in advance too. I recall that some seasoned model watchers over on netweather were somewhat skeptical of them doing so at the time.
They did mention it getting less cold at times in the west and southwest in their updates, but nothing significantly milder. This is exactly what we are seeing now.
If they're right about the rest of the month, then as snaps says we will unfortunately still get periods of less cold from time to time, but it's doubtful we'll see any significantly milder weather anytime soon.

On a side note M2 in the Irish sea has dropped nearly 2 degrees in 8 days,
looks like a cold winter is coming

Anyone notice that huge front/bank of cloud approaching SW now? Models seem to have that a long way away?
