Right time for a new speedtest thread as the old one created by Mike is over 12 months old, however lets have some rules so to give more information to everyone :)

    Rules:
    - State who your ISP is and type of Broadband (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
    - Provide a graphical test result from http://www.speedtest.net
    - Provide ping test results
    - Line Noise, SNR levels & sync rates are optional but are helpful :)
    - Location is also optional but is also sometimes helpful

    See example below
    Provider: UTV Internet 3MB ADSL*
    Location: N/A
    Line Noise:
    Down Up
Line Attenuation 16 db 4 db
Noise Margin 27 db 19 db
    Sync Rate: 3072 kbps / 384 kbps

I think this is about as good as you could expect from the mobile services.

    Results to the Dublin server

    Not as good.

Have Smart 7Mb at home, will do a test later on.

Down speed a bit on the low side, it varies a bit. Works better from wired connection.

    NTL cable broadband
    Location Coolmine/Clonsilla D15

I've always been happy with the NTL service. Generally I always get the full download speed and ping is good for gaming.

Their support lines on the other hand sucks.. long wait and all they can do is ask you to reboot your modem.

Thankfully, the speed is holding OK'ish this evening. Not the usual situation, since early last week. Hope it lasts, and gets back to normal soon, but I'm not optimistic!

Anyone know if being on wireless would make a difference to the results? I'm a bit away from the router. Think I'm supposed to be on a 3Mb line, I'm gonna ring them to double check that though.

The wireless router *shouldn't* make a difference to the speed but for some reason with my router the speed is almost halved! It's a new router on the market and I'm hoping that firmware updates will solve the problem..

It will affect your ping slightly but not by much, max 10ms..

The make a model of a router can often make a difference, some chipsets used by routers are better then others, same for firmware versions too.

Another aspect of this is using a wireless connection to your router may also affect results as your wireless signal may have interference, for best test results its preferable to connect via ethernet to your router

Not looking too good there, minikin.

Mine is a lot better with the wired connection, even with top signal strength and 55Mbps speed, the Internet speed is knocked from what should be 7Mbps down to less than 5Mbps.
    325625164.png

Going wired Ethernet, through power line adapters, I get this now
    329021862.png
which is more like what you'd want from a 7Mbps line.

Wireless can really hamper the speed, even if it's speed is well above the broadband speed. It can probably depend on the router you use too, and possibly the quality of the WiFi adapter on the PC.

Tried to ping www.boards.ie and gives me request time out on 4 out of 4 packages (don't know how to copy/paste from Command Prompt).
It's a little different, but very easy none the less once you know.

All you have to do is right-click your mouse on the Command Prompt window, and select Mark from the context menu. Then use your mouse, accompanied by holding down the left mouse button to drag and spread the white colored highlight to select the area of content you wish to copy. When you're satisfied, let the left mouse button go. Then simply hit your Enter key, which instructs Windows to copy the highlighted content. All done, the data is now in clipboard, and can be pasted anywhere, as normal.
