Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Keep an eye on the main newspapers, North and Republic. Recruitment campaigns are anounced in the press or you can look at http://www.selectnipolice.org .

    Hi All
Always wanted to apply for the Gardai, now considering PSNI. I am in a job at the moment and the contract does not finish until December 2009. So was wondering once you apply to the PSNI how long does the entire recruitment process take (assuming you are successful at each stage). Also is 20/20 vision a requirement and if so is laser surgery acceptable?

The next recruitment for the PSNI isn't until Spring 2009. The following link gives you a breakdown of the whole process.

    http://www.selectnip.org/indexREGapp.asp?id=app_process.asp

Please note that vetting, for example, can take up to a year to complete.

As for eyesight requirements, you must have Binocular vision 6/6 aided or unaided (if visual aids are used must have 6/12 or better in best eye).

Follow this link for more info; http://www.selectnip.org/indexREGapp.asp?id=app_req.asp

Laser surgery is acceptable, but you have to have had it done well in advance of your medical (6 weeks minimum, I think).

C13 is short for Campaign 13. We are currently in the middle of Campaign 14 (C14). There's a bucket-load of abbrieviations to get used to.

Looks like GCBC (another abbrieviation!!!) beat me to that one!

No free parking I'm afraid. I parked in a multi-storey round the corner. Cost me £9.40!!!!

In the end I was glad I parked there because as soon as I sat down in the waiting room I realised that I had left my letter in the car. I know, what a dumbass! :o I had been reading over it before I went in and left it there because I was so hyped up about it all.

Really glad I paid for near-by parking. I nearly got the bus that day!

Hi Smyff just wondering did your optician take the eyesight requirement "if visual aids are used must have 6/12 in best eye" as being 6/12 when your wearing your glasses or when you're not? It's been puzzling me!!!

ammmmmm, well, ive got 20/20 vision with the specs on.

i took my glasses off and he asked me to read the most lines i could.

the 6/12 in the best eye thing is with your glasses off, because we have to assume that you have 20/20 with your glasses on!!!

are you colour blind at all mate? book an appointment with the optitians and see what the craic is with it.

Do you mind me asking what you could read (how many lines) without your glasses? The eyesight bit has been worrying me a bit - have yet to see my optician and ask his professional opinion but will do so soon. TIA :(

2 lmaoooooo. but i could sorta read the 3rd if i squinted a bit. my eyes where a bit sore n i was tired, since 9am monday, n that was tuesday at 3.30pm. hada do a nightshift in work!!! but he said that its borderline/a bit better than it.

just book an appointment asap, n get it off your mind!!! are you colour blind at all?!?!?!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 254 ✭✭inspector71

I got my eyes tested before the IST.
I'd managed to get a bit of metal in one in february and I started to panic that it might ruin my eyesight and chances of getting in the police
I must be very lucky, coz it didn't do any damage at all.
    scary stuff though!!

I heard they were strict on colour blindness! I got checked and it's worth it to put your mind at rest!

Just find it odd because the eyesight requirements are exactly the same as the english forces except their 6/12 is aided or unaided whereas people here seem to be saying that it's definitely 6/12 unaided which of course is a massive difference to someone like me who might just miss out and is scared stiff of getting laser! No I'm not colour blind but looks like I'm gonna miss out anyway because of my eyesight. Last time at opticians I was 6/20 unaided in best eye!!!

    hi psni,
i'm new to this whole setup and dont really know how the this posts/treads stuff works. i was reading your comments and really found your advice great.
i'm hoping to apply to psni next time it comes round, any idea when that is?
also, i'm married with kids living in tipperary, dont really want to move them closer to the north, and was concerened about the shifts worked. there seems to be confusion as to weather or not it's 4 days on/off or 8 hour days or is there a choice?
thanks in advance. i hope i've written this in the right place?!

Alrite guys i just have a few questions to ask,

Im currently 16 and living in Armagh its been my dream, you could say to join the police since we got a visit to the school by the police when i was 4 and now as im getting older im trying to do as much research into the job as i can and i need some questions answered if you dont mind..

    - What age do i have to be before i can apply to join?
    - I've always wanted to get into the dog handling section, is it hard to get into?

Thats pretty much it, any advice would be greatly appreciated. :D

Hi there TheMoj and welcome to the board!

Sadly for yourself you must be aged between 18 and 57 on the application deadline date, so it looks like another 2 years max til you can apply.

I'm not sure how difficult it would be to get into the dog handling section, i think you need to be out of your probationary 2 year period before you can apply to be a dog handler..someone feel free to correct me.

    Hope this helps you!:D

    Thanks,

Yeah I had a feeling it was 18 but didn't know if it really was or not and I've no problem waiting until then. Thanks for verifying that for me :D

I was told that I would have to wait a while before being able to apply for the dog handling section and yet again I've no problem waiting. I've grew up all my life with German Shepherds so I'm no stranger to dogs and as soon as I knew that I could work in the police along side dogs my mind was made up.

I just hope that when the time comes I wont have much difficulty in getting into the police. Have any of you guys got any advice on what sort of obstacles I could face when applying?

You seem like a good kid, and i do wish you all the best when you do apply.

I checked myself and it is after 2 years probationary, that you can start applying for specialist units...ie dog handlers.

Well there are quite a lot of obstacles that you shall encounter. The first is your test at the initial selection test centre where you have multiple choice questions. Then if you pass that there is the interview stage at the assessment centre, where you are given different situations that you must role play on the spot basically. Next comes the vetting forms and medical...just make sure you don't take anything that looks like lemsip, up your nose in a clear plastic bag!! Then after all that...it's a waiting game my friend!!
    :D

Haha, I wouldn't worry about me taking anything dodgy I've stayed clean from that sort of stuff and plan to stay clean.

Yet again thanks for your advice I really do appreciate it, it's good to talk to somebody that has some knowledge of the job to share with me.

I guess that's pretty much me sorted, now all that's left is the wait.. :D

    Thanks again.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 721 ✭✭✭goodcopbadcop

best advice I have for you is work hard at school so you have a back up.... and stay out of trouble, the next couple of years there will be alot of times when it will be easy to slip up and get on the wrong side of the law when out partying etc, just stay neutral and dont get involved with anything that could affect you getting in.

    No problem mate,

This board will surely be here when it's your turn to apply! And there will be more helpful people to answer all your questions!

I'll just be finishing my probationary period when you apply, so i do wish you all the best!!:D

Hi there TheMoj u have been given some sound advice there all i can add to that is as soon as u r 18 apply if i can be of any help to u like the other guys on the board feel free to give me a shout ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4 TheMoj

Yeah i plan on applying when i hit 18, which will be in Jan. 2010 so still a fair bit to go until then..

I'm going to try my best to stay out of trouble, shouldn't be that hard for me i'm usually working weekend nights so that keeps me from partying and things, im not much of a party person anyway. All my mates are pretty sensible guys so I doubt we'll get up to anything we shouldn't be doing.

I've finished up with school now and my results are all pretty good so i don't think that will be a problem but if it is i've no problem in going back to try and better them.

No mate, there's no requirements for education for the PSNI, it's all assessment based. It doesn't matter if you left school with 3 GCSEs, or spent 4 years trying to destroy your liver and hump the leg of every girl you came across at university, a person is judged on their merits as they relate to the job.

On your own in C15?! Not likely! There'll probably be about 8,000 applying again. Including most of us from C14 who haven't been called up by March.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 161 ✭✭Sadie OOO!!!

is march the final calls. so if we haven been called by march its a dear john then.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,258 ✭✭✭carlty888

No. The calls will probably go on to December or thereabouts.

C15 starts March/April 09, so anyone who hasn't had a call for C14 by then would be advised to reapply for C15.
