Just noticed diesel @ 159.0/lt at ESSO on old Airport Rd. I thought most places were 144 - 149 approx. or is this a special for tourists returning hire cars to the adjacent hire companies?

Well, Topaz in Ballindine Co Mayo were 1.39 for diesel and 1.47 (iirc) for petrol yesterday: cheapest I've seen.

OP that station is there to catch out Hire Cars on their way back to the airport! It's been like that since I were a lad.

Garage on the headford road in Galway were 1.35.9 for diesel yesterday - That's the cheapest I've seen in a while.

There used to be a Texaco filling station on the Upper Drumcondra Road near the Skylon that had the same reputation and for the same reason.

And on the topic of ripping off tourists....

Up to a few years ago when French tourists with cars came off the ferry in Rosslare they were usually driving on vapour because at the time petrol was cheaper here than over there so they usually arrived with an empty tank. Naturally they bought fuel in the first filling station they came across but within minutes of driving up the road it became obvious that they had been royally ripped off.

Doubt they are trying to catch people out considering they are two doors up from one of the cheapest stations around.

I would say it's the same situation as the usher quay station used to be. Extortion prices on the pumps as they probably have a large number of accounts with all the rental and dealer companies around them and use the high prices to keep the forecourt clear for these customers and give discount prices to the accounts.

Like any business, the filling stations are free to charge any price they like.

I'd like any member to state what percentage margin profit they deem acceptable for fuel retailer.

There's a place on the Lower Ballymount Road in Ballymount Industrial estate that has Diesel for €1.35.9. Cheapest I've seen.

Cold engine is probably a bit harder on fuel.
It's only 5k away, you could walk some days. would make the task easier.

The last figures from the CSO that I can think of were
from October-ish last year with two thirds of new cars
diesel, it used to be the other way around !

The CO2 linked car tax has got rid of the need for the lower duty
rate as was given in an answer in the Dail sometime in the 80's.

No it hasnt, there are still a lot of pre 2008 diesel cars, so we should just convinietly forgot them these?

A friend of mine got Diesel today for €1.33/L, mind you he did buy 1,200 litres of it and filled his home tank. Buying in Bulk and all that I suppose.

I'm not forgetting about them, my car is one of them.

The ideal solution which everyone/nearly everyone
agrees with is no cax tax, all duty on fuel, active/inactive cars
logged by NCT/Insurance database.

However that's not going to happen any time soon, so
with the revised CO2 car tax system and without an equalisation
of duty rates we're distorting the market again.

which could equally mean a reduction in petrol duty
but that ain't goinig to happen any time soon either.

The old "put all taxes on fuel" chestnut again.
I need to commute and I'm glad prices are coming down (Tesco in Limerick diesel at 1.369), can't see any of these loony schemes getting adopted by the government, thank christ.
So at least a tiny bit of light at the end of the tunnel for me at long last.
And in the end it's six of one and half a dozen of the other.

That's outrageous. The price I quoted was just before I got home. Passed through the village, stopped at Tesco, posted the price on boards.

Haven't seen any petrol station in Cork city below 1.489 recently. Looks like the recent drop gave us a skip! No doubt this weekend's increase won't.......

alot of garages have raised their prices but some remain the same> 147.9

I notice it at well.... They are like sheep... Once 1 garage goes up they all follow... There is no competition IMO... There are 2 garages in particular on my way to work and when diesel was at its highest one was 148.9 and the other 144.9. 4 cent in the difference. Today they are the same. They have both just put up there prices by 2cent from 138.9....
