Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Microsoft Studios' Killer Instinct Thursday Stream

    Seems like this went over pretty well last week, so while we had an IG stream today that showed the EVO build of KI, I thought it was time for the next textual stream so we can talk about what's up with KI S2 progress!

    We have a stage ultra in and working and it’s just... great. It’s very much KI in feel and everyone that has seen it gets a big grin on their face. Not every stage lends itself to having one, but those that have them will likely be very popular choices for matches. Each one is very unique.
    Maya’s powered up weapon effects are going to add a very distinct visual look to her combat. You could say that they make the attacks “come alive"....
    We are down to only a few issues remaining on the next update before it goes into certification. We’re intentionally taking more time on testing this update so that it can fly through cert and get out to all of you as quickly as possible. Lobby and gameplay stability are the core emphasis of the update.

    A smattering of forum stuff:
    The focus test at IG this Friday is around balance changes for the S1 cast and potential new tools for each. Once we’re firmer on changes we’ll certainly share with the community.
    We have always planned KI as (at least) 3 seasons. While we understand that everyone is excited / worried on who could or could not be in S2, know that by S3 at the latest, all 13 fighters will return.
    Season 2 will be adding another 1000+ gamerscore to the title. You can expect a similar achievement set for all the new characters (150GS each), plus some new ones for the season overall.
    Character-specific dojo lessons is part of our S2 plan.

    And finally, some teases:
    One of the oldest characters in S2 is just shy of 3,500 years old!
    All characters in S2 are either returning ones or new characters created specifically for the KI universe. No guests.
    We (Microsoft) announced some new games this year at E3. It’s possible a KI character this season will have an alt costume inspired by one of them. What could it be and from which game?

    NOTE (again) that nothing I say in this or in any other textual stream update regarding any specific original characters should be taken as “confirmation” or even “soft confirmation” that they are in or out of Season 2. Only official announcements are confirmation of anything that will absolutely be in S2."

    After a week break for gamescom, we’re back with the textual stream this week.

    What’s up with KI:
    A lot of official information came out this week for KI S2; Official S2 start date (Oct 15th); the return of Mick Gordon for the music; TJ early access for S2 Ultra purchasers (or via retail disc code); KI2 classic with multiplayer for ultra ed.; Kev Bayliss doing the alternate costumes for the S2 characters.
    The patch is still on its way. We’ll deploy it as soon as we can and let you know the minute it goes out.
    The S1 change list is very close and we continue to test everything. We’ll share more on the changes (video / stream or text, TBD) once they’re completely locked down.

    Maya:
    Work on her effects and flow is the current focus. Here’s a fun Maya pressure approach + dagger powerup combo from mid range:
    QCF+LP – throw light dagger
    F,F – dash roll
    (opponent blocks dagger, it bounces & powers up)
    Cancel roll into f+HK overhead kick
    (catch dagger midair)
    Pressure with overhead into a mixup

    We certainly want players to be able to make an informed purchase. You will know more of the features and roster for S2 before launch.
    Air breakers being implemented doesn't mean air combos are being added to the cast. They mean that you can break juggle hits as if they were manuals.
    There are no clowns, mimes, giant apes or giant snails in S2’s roster.

    And finally, teases:
    As we’ve said before, Maya’s trailer teases a new character at the end. That new character’s trailer then teases a returning character.
    Most of Maya’s arsenal returns in some form. That includes mantis, jungle leap, and flip kick.

    Pre-PAX week, it’s time for another textual stream!

    What’s up with KI:
    Our CU rolled out, and looks like everything is much better than it was. If you are experiencing any issues post-patch, please post them in the bug thread!
    Final polish on TJ’s ultra and audio incorporation is wrapping up. Has a very different cadence than the other ultras.
    …and we’ve fixed the unlimited ultra / recapture he had. You’re going to have to work for those 200+ hit ultras now!
    TJ’s theme is… well Mick has given y’all a great tease, let’s just leave it at that!
    Maya is looking really great. Dreads aren’t simmed yet, but the rest of her has translated from concept to in-game really well.

    There is a new progression unlock system for S2 that will allow everyone to get their colors and other accessories without MP ranks.
    That said, there are new exclusive MP rewards too... more on all of this before launch!
    Did you know: you now have a brightness setting!

    Teases!
    There’s hundreds of suggestions for new characters in the forums. One of them is pretty close in theme to a new character this season!
    The 3rd character’s idle is rather arrogant.
    Maya’s end of match victory line: “You were not worthy prey.”

    -The final hit of Shadow Leaping Slash now recaptures an airborne opponent into a ground combo.
    -While the forward Dash is the same duration as before, Sabrewulf gets behind his opponent quicker now so that properly timed punish attempts are less likely to come out facing the wrong way.
    -One additional frame has been added after the Super Flash before Shadow Eclipse hits.
    -Backdash distance reduced.
    -Crouching Light Punch pushes the opponent back further.
    -Fixed a bug that let Sabrewulf cancel Crouching Medium Punch into his -Heavy Chain during Hitstop, which also prevented Manual Breakers from firing correctly.

    Updated Instinct:
    -In addition to its previous properties, while in Instinct Sabre now gains the ability to perform a Feral Cancel (HP+HK) which can cancel any grounded move back to neutral. This has a short cooldown on it but can be performed as much as you want during Instinct.

    Welcome to this week’s post-PAX textual stream!

    Thank you to everyone that stopped by at PAX to get a preview of S2’s character rebalance and TJ’s final moveset. We appreciate all the feedback and (constructive) criticism and will continue to evolve KI as we move into Season 2!

    What’s up with KI:
    *Maya’s theme is a great mix of her KI2 theme and new elements, as you’ve heard from Mick’s vine. ( https://vine.co/v/OuBUq7JVYq0 )
    *TJ’s accessories for his default costume put him in outfits for training and fighting in… other arenas.
    *Kev Bayliss’ TJ alternate costume is both retro and new at the same time. It’s KI2 TJ with some new flair.
    *TJ early access defined

    *On September 23rd, the early access phase of Season 2 includes access to TJ Combo as a playable character. There have been many questions about what else you have access to regarding TJ in early access. Let’s break it down:
    TJ as a playable character with his full moveset and ultra is available on September 23rd. You can use him in practice, survival, exhibition, and lobby modes.
    *TJ’s achievements, fight titles, stage, and use in ranked play will not be available until S2 launch on October 15th.
    *TJ’s dojo lessons are planned for a later update that includes all the other character-specific dojo lessons.
    *TJ’s story mode will also come later in the season along with the rest of the S2 cast’s stories. Story mode comes later because we need all of the S2 cast available to tell S2’s story.

    From the forums / twitter:
    *We love seeing the passion from the community around the S2 system and balance changes. Keep in mind that we will continue to evaluate and watch for circumstances and systems that aren’t working as ideally as we’d like and continue to hone game balance.
    *Microsoft KI streams will be coming back. We want to make sure we have stuff to show and talk to, so S2 launch and onwards expect us to start bringing streams in to the mix of community activities we do.

    Teases:
    *Maya is the biggest and tallest female character in all of KI’s roster across the entirety of seasons 1 and 2.
    *While KI will never be a pure zoning game due to combo structure (eventually you have to get close and combo), there are several characters this season that have powerful zoning and ranged options. Character #3 is certainly one of those.

    Welcome to the post-leg textual stream! With a question for y'all too!

    What’s up with KI S2:
    WE ARE 11 DAYS AWAY FROM EARLY ACCESS FOR SEASON 2! 11 DAYS UNTIL TJ!
    Some lucky focus testers got to go hands-on with Maya the other night. The results? Near-unanimous LOVE for how she plays. She has some of the craziest combos in the game yet – you’ll get a taste of that in her trailer.
    And regarding Maya’s trailer – you will see it before the end of the month!

    More endings, or more story?

    For season 1, we followed the arcade games in having three endings for each character’s story. While it was great to pay homage to the originals, creating multiple endings, two of which are essentially throw-away work because they’re not canon (i.e. the “real” ending for that character that we use into the future) takes time away from adding more story element to each character that matters going forwards.

    So the question I ask of all of you: is the trade-off worth it? If we could get a bit more story into each character’s story mode (say a rival intro and pre-boss scene) by removing the three endings and only having one ending per character, is that worth it to y’all? We’d like to know! Comment in the thread if you want to keep it as-is or would like more story beats in each S2 story!

    From the forums / twitter:
    There are no 3D rotating stages planned for KI right now.
    We’re aware that some countries aren’t able to purchase the Ultra edition of KI in their respective countries’ stores. That is being resolved, and we’ll update you on it as soon as we can.
    For those of you in Germany or using the German store, be aware that due to ratings restrictions in Germany, we can’t sell the Ultra edition in that country’s store.

    To repeat, before launch (Oct 15th) of season 2, you will have much more information on what’s in the season, not by early access.
    We currently have no intention to offer an option to play with S1 balance & features vs. S2 balance and features. Too many core systems and character scripts have been changed behind the scenes for S2 onwards to easily allow a toggle between versions.

    Tease:
    The teaser for the 3rd character (at the end of Maya’s trailer) does something we’ve not done before – you get an early peek at that character's stage too!
    Fun Stuff!

    We use a mix of motion capture and hand animation for our characters. For Maya's mocap, we got Keri Hoskins to play Maya. What other fighting game series has she done mocap for? Hint: They're in Chicago as well..."
