We took a trip up to Dunleer today to visit a well known toy store there.

We decided to stop by Port Oriel (aka Clogherhead)

Some lads spinning on the end of the pier and using feathers.

    Nothing happening at all.

3 lads on the rocks also casting feathers and nothing happening.

Showed a polish lad how to cast propperly (his 1st time ever at sea fishing)

I cast out as far as I could for him, showed him how to jig and reel, and low and behold,I caught a small pollack for him.

He was well delighted with the catch and very happy that I showed him to cast and jig propperly.

By the time I got to the camera the chap had thrown it back in.

2 seals swimming in and out of the harbour while we were there.

I think they may have had the Blessing of the Fleet yesterday,as all the trawlers were in,and all had bunting up on them.

It was very busy there today, festival like atmosphere......even an ice cream van on the pier doing great business.:)

Cheers Faigs are they dirty fish like mullet or are they edible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,204 ✭✭✭dodderangler

Looks more like a young coalfish to me
It's eyes look different than a pollock

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 800 ✭✭✭faigs

Pollock is definitely edible but if it's a coalfish I'm not sure. Not a great authority on it to be honest! Other lads here would have a better idea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,204 ✭✭✭dodderangler

    They are perfectly edible

West Pier is too crowded, people who dont have a clue how to cast and they cross your line, tourists in your face every second.

Kids runninhg everywhere and nearly getting hooked in the feathers.

Then add in all the pleasure craft and jet skis whizzing in and out close to the harbour and its an even worse place to try and fish from.

    Don't forget the seals.

    A few caught there yesterday.

    Seals I'd say.
I've hooked my fair share of them fat ba5tards on both piers out there. Bullock harbour is te worst for seals

What happens when you hook a seal , how do you know its happened ? what do you do then ?

You'll get very excited in thinking that its a tope that's taken your mackerel as you feel your line scream off until you see that big fat head rise up eating your mackerel. Generally you won't physically hook the seal but he will take the mackerel and swim with it. Only thing to do is fight it back to save your line.

ive also seen 5 0z weights being shot out of the water like a bullet when a seal grabs you mackerel..moves a bit and lets go..be careful out there:-p

Still a bit of a chill in the water if this has already been said does it affect the mackerel arrival?

Local lads around Bray weren't get many at all recently but maybe that's changed now.

P.S. Went on my first trip about a month ago trying to catch razor blade fish and even with shells in the area had no joy. Tide was out and used salty water to lure them out past Booterstown while the tide was out. Any advise on best time, area, method? Thanks!

Can I urge and advise everyone going angling (be it shore or boat fishing) to please check the weather forecasts in that area that you are going fishing.

Try to be prepared and make sure you let people know where you are going and what time you expect to be back home at.

    Thanks.:)

Mackerel now being caught on the rocks/cliffs just after the large grey/white house at Balscaddan Bay,Howth.

Was out there at lunchtime for around 10 minutes, and watched 2 lads down on the rocks pulling in 3 at a time.

Not huge size, but good enough to eat.

Caught 8 mackerel in the space of an hour this morning at Balscaddan Bay,Howth.

Fished the tide as it was on the fall.....(full tide was 10am).

A few other anglers down on the rocks fishing.

The seal was jumping out of the water chasing the hooked mackerel in to the rocks. He managed to nab a fair few mackerel too.:D

Big thunderstorm out there at about 3pm,quite a bit of fork lightening over the bay,as the storm came in over land.:)

Wasting time there mate. The hotspot for the mackerel around bullock is in between the mainland and the island with the goats on it.
Il be there hopefully on Saturday rain or shine.

Woukd somebody be able to put up a photo of their fishing rig for catching Them please ? I'm new to this game. Have feathers and big weights and 12 beach caster. Any help and I would be delighted.
    Thanks :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,204 ✭✭✭dodderangler

    It's pretty basic.
The feathers you have should have a swivel on the start and end of feathers. Tie you line on the start and on the end should be a swivel to put a 4 or 5 oz weight onto it.
    Simple enough

  • Registered Users Posts: 560 ✭✭✭robclay26

Just back from Balscaddan Bay in Howth.

Absolutely hammered the Mackerel out of it today....casting about 90-100 yards out into a small narrow gully.

2 small boats about 200 yards off shore also hammering them out of it.

Several seals and also a pod of porposes in close to the shoreline.:)

Myself and pullandbang took close to 70 between us at clougherhead today..........on the kayaks.

Most of mine were/are catch and release.:)

I keep a few for a nice fish supper and some for bait for the shore angling/casting.

Alri. I was just wondering because there's lads moaning about there being no fish and are being overfished yet have no problem taking over a hundred home with them.
Il admit I done it myself and found that it was a waste of fish.
So now 20-30 will do me fine and I'd probably use bout ten of them to fish for something else. Dogfish or ray if I knew where they are :)
Still yet to catch a ray

A nice fresh peeler crab or a large sandeel will catch both.:)

I only fish for the sport of it.:)

I very rarely take home my catch.

Only time is the odd nice codling or when its mackerel season and I want a nice fish supper or some frozen mackerel as bait for winter shore fishing.

Out of 37 mackerel caught today I took home 11...which is enough for me.

Simple answer YES, I keep what I'll use. I keep x amount for myself then give some to family and friends along with keeping some for bait.

Its hardly overfishing taking 30 fish!

If your not going to use them, put them back. I don't fish for mackerel for the fun of it (tho it is enjoyable) I fish to feed myself along with others that enjoy the fish. I course fish for the "fun" element and all fish are returned.
