Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

technically it doesn't become the M1 until after the first exit after the santry exit, until then it's the N1 (iirc). I use that stretch of road - it's certainly not motorway there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,520 ✭✭✭Alek

He continued forward, photo taken just before that. I turn left here daily.

    (I wouldn't write this if I was on M1, hey? ;) )

    [edit]

You are absolutely correct Lenny! My bad. Dammit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,458 ✭✭✭lennymc

I used to think it was motorway too, until I checked it out. I use that stretch now as it cuts out santry and the omni and all the associated hassle.

    Hi all,
No point starting a thread for this so i said i'd ask here instead.

Am i supposed to get race numbers with a limited competition license?
I can't seem to see anything about it on the CI website

Nope, just a license card, any race that requires them will provide them AFAIK

Technically the M50 is beneath you. I never used that stretch of road myself. Heading Northbound it always looks too tight when cars are passing cyclists.
I'm always knackered anyway by the time I get to the lights at Whitehall after the drag up from Drumcondra and I slink off to recover around the rat runs towards Oscar Traynor rd.:)

Looking at Street View it looks quite tight alright - single outbound lane and a joke of a hard shoulder.

And I think its a 60 limit, so expect cars to be accelerating to 80!

Fair play to this fella from NI.
A morbidly obese man who piled on the pounds thanks to a twice-daily takeaway habit and 'hated leaving the house' because of his looks has lost 19st in just one year.

David Rush, 33, from Lisburn, Northern Ireland, felt that he 'shouldn't go out' because of his size but lost the weight after plucking up the courage to start cycling.

At his heaviest, he weighed 34st and was forced to order specialist XXXXXL clothes on the internet - the result of topping up his takeaway-heavy diet with six bags of crisps and two bottles of full-fat Coca-Cola a day.

Hey a 'Thank You' to the cyclist on the Malahide Road, Thursday morning, who pointed out that my phone wallet was about to fall out of the back pocket of my cycling jacket.

If you're reading this, I didn't get to thank you enough man ~ my phone, money, cards and work I.D. would have been lost.

Silly me had forgotten to zip up my pocket.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for information on replacing these cables?

Turned out to be beyond saving...total bummer. Thanks to the lads in Thinkbike for having a look at it. I hadn't pinged that the shifters weren't indexing. BB was zapped, back wheel was badly out of true but was also buzzing.

I would normally have suggested using the frame for a nice s/spd build with a cheap back wheel but the frame was corroded.

9.23 start time? They did their best to let the car win. 8.23 they'd have probably seen buses go past full, and not been able to get the car out onto the N11!

just wish they would improve the cycling paths etc on that road as they are shockingly in need of work on that road

Apologies for being pedantic but it only becomes the M1 after the M50 interchange. The stretch from there to Dublin Port (via tunnel) is all still the M50. If you were to travel from the Red Cow interchange to Dublin Port via DPT you never leave the M50. It's the N1 from Santry to the DPT exit/entrance.

Not pleasant to cycle on Alek. Motorist traffic is very close and you'll get the odd horn blast from drivers assuming you are cycling on a motorway.

what do people bring with them gear wise when going on a long 100km+ spin
obviously a spare tube and multitool
but how much water and what else?

Went there yesterday. Not too bad to be honest, and much faster than going via Santry.

Not a pleasant one by any means but usable if I'm late to work :)

What you mentioned and then a couple of bars and a couple of water bottles, phone, bit of cash, pump, tire levers. If it looks like it might rain then I'll bring a raincoat.

From bitter experience: patches, a proper tyre boot, chain tool and possibly missing link.

I don't actually bring these things (apart from patches), but I would if I learned from my bitter experiences, for instance being stuck up a mountain in Donegal in gale force winds and rain with no mobile signal, repeatedly and desperately trying to use folded cash to boot a tyre as each note in turn bursts through the hole, finally having to descend on a flat tyre to a petrol station and call a taxi, shivering and swearing.

Also: don't start a 100km ride when one of your tyres "looks a bit dodgy".

Only problem with that "singing road" is that the rumble strips would be awful on a bike + they run them tight to the outside edge of the road. shame they didn't build them near the centre so that cars would be incentivised to leave space on the right and to keep them out of the way of cyclists.

I saw a tip: cut up (and clean) an old toothpaste tube to make a boot. Just cut out about 10cmx4cm. Indeed, I found it does make a good boot. (This preparation is at home, as a permanent addition to your toolkit. Not much use when you're actually stranded up a mountainside in Donegal.)

What about these to get you home on a puncture or are they just a gimmick?

I used one on my wheel barrow just to see if they were any good and they work
It has stayed up fully hard for the last year or so there is about 30PSI in the tyer.

Interesting thanks, Theres probably a lot more volume to fill on a wheelbarrow tyre aswell. For less than 3 euro I think Ill chance a couple, always a bit nervous about never carrying tubes or tools when I go out.
