    Welcome to this week’s post-PAX textual stream!

    Thank you to everyone that stopped by at PAX to get a preview of S2’s character rebalance and TJ’s final moveset. We appreciate all the feedback and (constructive) criticism and will continue to evolve KI as we move into Season 2!

    What’s up with KI:
    *Maya’s theme is a great mix of her KI2 theme and new elements, as you’ve heard from Mick’s vine. ( https://vine.co/v/OuBUq7JVYq0 )
    *TJ’s accessories for his default costume put him in outfits for training and fighting in… other arenas.
    *Kev Bayliss’ TJ alternate costume is both retro and new at the same time. It’s KI2 TJ with some new flair.
    *TJ early access defined

    *On September 23rd, the early access phase of Season 2 includes access to TJ Combo as a playable character. There have been many questions about what else you have access to regarding TJ in early access. Let’s break it down:
    TJ as a playable character with his full moveset and ultra is available on September 23rd. You can use him in practice, survival, exhibition, and lobby modes.
    *TJ’s achievements, fight titles, stage, and use in ranked play will not be available until S2 launch on October 15th.
    *TJ’s dojo lessons are planned for a later update that includes all the other character-specific dojo lessons.
    *TJ’s story mode will also come later in the season along with the rest of the S2 cast’s stories. Story mode comes later because we need all of the S2 cast available to tell S2’s story.

    From the forums / twitter:
    *We love seeing the passion from the community around the S2 system and balance changes. Keep in mind that we will continue to evaluate and watch for circumstances and systems that aren’t working as ideally as we’d like and continue to hone game balance.
    *Microsoft KI streams will be coming back. We want to make sure we have stuff to show and talk to, so S2 launch and onwards expect us to start bringing streams in to the mix of community activities we do.

    Teases:
    *Maya is the biggest and tallest female character in all of KI’s roster across the entirety of seasons 1 and 2.
    *While KI will never be a pure zoning game due to combo structure (eventually you have to get close and combo), there are several characters this season that have powerful zoning and ranged options. Character #3 is certainly one of those.

    What’s up with KI S2:
    WE ARE 11 DAYS AWAY FROM EARLY ACCESS FOR SEASON 2! 11 DAYS UNTIL TJ!
    Some lucky focus testers got to go hands-on with Maya the other night. The results? Near-unanimous LOVE for how she plays. She has some of the craziest combos in the game yet – you’ll get a taste of that in her trailer.
    And regarding Maya’s trailer – you will see it before the end of the month!

    More endings, or more story?

    For season 1, we followed the arcade games in having three endings for each character’s story. While it was great to pay homage to the originals, creating multiple endings, two of which are essentially throw-away work because they’re not canon (i.e. the “real” ending for that character that we use into the future) takes time away from adding more story element to each character that matters going forwards.

    So the question I ask of all of you: is the trade-off worth it? If we could get a bit more story into each character’s story mode (say a rival intro and pre-boss scene) by removing the three endings and only having one ending per character, is that worth it to y’all? We’d like to know! Comment in the thread if you want to keep it as-is or would like more story beats in each S2 story!

    From the forums / twitter:
    There are no 3D rotating stages planned for KI right now.
    We’re aware that some countries aren’t able to purchase the Ultra edition of KI in their respective countries’ stores. That is being resolved, and we’ll update you on it as soon as we can.
    For those of you in Germany or using the German store, be aware that due to ratings restrictions in Germany, we can’t sell the Ultra edition in that country’s store.

    To repeat, before launch (Oct 15th) of season 2, you will have much more information on what’s in the season, not by early access.
    We currently have no intention to offer an option to play with S1 balance & features vs. S2 balance and features. Too many core systems and character scripts have been changed behind the scenes for S2 onwards to easily allow a toggle between versions.

    Tease:
    The teaser for the 3rd character (at the end of Maya’s trailer) does something we’ve not done before – you get an early peek at that character's stage too!
    Fun Stuff!

    We use a mix of motion capture and hand animation for our characters. For Maya's mocap, we got Keri Hoskins to play Maya. What other fighting game series has she done mocap for? Hint: They're in Chicago as well..."

    What a week! TGS! Maya trailer! New character tease! A peek at the new UI!

    Let’s get to it!
    S1 Ultra and Combo owners, YOU get a deal on S2 Ultra Edition!

    Starting on 9/23 with Early Access, and ending 9/29, all Season 1 Ultra or Combo owners will get an automatic 10% discount on the purchase of the S2 Ultra Edition! It’s our way of saying thanks for being part of S1 and believing in Killer Instinct.

    Even if you buy S1 (Ultra or Combo) during that week, you can immediately take advantage of the discount on S2 Ultra Edition!


    Early Access and the S1 balance update
    On Monday the 22nd, the balance update for S1 will be pushed out and your game will be updated. On Tuesday the 23rd, early access starts. You will not have the ability to purchase the S2 Ultra Edition and get early access to TJ until the 23rd, so DON'T PANIC if you get the update on Monday but can't buy into S2. We wanted to make sure everyone had the update first.

    By now, you’ve all seen Maya’s trailer. She’s an incredible character with a ton of combo and juggling options that make her amazing not only to play but to watch, too. You have only around a month before you get to play her! 60FPS version of her trailer and Ultra coming soon!

    The next character teased!
    We gave you a very early glimpse of the next character releasing this season. His name and origin will remain a mystery for now, but his stage, cluttered with the artifacts he’s gathered over the centuries for his dark research, is called The Forbidden Archive. You’ll know this character’s name and more of his background by Season 2 launch, and you can look for him and his trailer to arrive in November.

    Maya is playable at TGS, and we’ll be having streams and more detail on her moves and mechanics soon. We’ve got this whole S2 early access thing launching in 5 DAYS, so let’s get through that first, eh?


    New UI!
    Yes! There is a new UI that goes in line with the theme of this season’s story, “The Rise of Ultratech”. We’ve shown it to you a bit early at TGS, and you can look for it to be evolving up to S2’s launch and beyond.

    New Progression mechanics
    As some have noticed in the new UI preview at TGS, we’ve overhauled the ranking and leveling system for S2 to make it more friendly towards earning your costumes, accessories, and other badges of honor. A player will have a character level for each individual character, and a player level for overall progression. Every mode you play (except dojo / lab) contributes to character and player level, so you’ll be earning progression towards specific unlocks (for the character you’re playing) and global unlocks any time you’re playing KI in any way. We’ll have more on the new progression system before S2’s launch.


    S2 characters first for Ultra Edition owners
    Last season, Ultra and Combo owners got new characters on the same day. This season, S2 Ultra Edition owners will get each new character first. Several days later, S2 Combo pack owners will get them. Sometime after the combo pack gets them, they will be available for individual purchase.

    Boy, with all the info already this week, what could I possibly tease? How’s this:

    At the end of TJ’s teaser, he was lit up by someone or something behind him. There’s only two characters from the original KI that could have possibly created a glow like that. Whichever one it was, they are returning this season. What about the other? We’re not saying yet if they’re coming this season or next. Continue the speculation!

    Welcome to this week's textual stream! We're only 20 DAYS from S2 launch!

    Lots to cover! Let's dive in!

    Early access!

    We hope everyone is having fun with the new changes and TJ. There's a few balance tweaks coming with the launch of S2 (e.g. Sadira has less KV on air attacks) and we will continue to play, watch, and listen to feedback, so please continue to (constructively) contribute to KI's development here on the forums!

    Matchmaking & “the spinal patch”

    Many players have commented that after the release of Spinal during S1, matchmaking became more difficult. Before the Spinal update, we were much more tolerant of >50ms pings in matchmaking, supporting pings of up to 200ms. That changed after the Spinal patch, getting a lot more restrictive on pings beyond 50ms.

    We’re addressing this. Right around the launch of Season 2, matching search criteria will look at a larger range of pings (up to 150ms) and be less exclusive as it generationally searches for good matches between players. This should result in an easier time finding a match anywhere in the world . Of course, we’ll continue to adjust until we get it right so that everyone worldwide can play anyone else and have a good game.

    S2 Progression systems

    First things first – SPEND YOUR KP NOW!

    We are moving away from a point bank & spend system (KP) and instead embracing an earned XP system based on you just playing the game in any non-practice mode. The new system unlocks items based on player or character level, so you’ll automatically earn your colors and accessories just by playing. The level system will continue to grow over the season, so there’s lots of stuff to chase for each character, including 9 colors (yep, 9! For both S1 and S2 characters!) and other prestige items.

    For items that you already own from S1, you will automatically have them unlocked rather than having to hit the character level to access them. This is why you should spend your KP before S2 starts.

    “KI Gold”

    While all non-premium accessories are available by leveling (i.e. for free), we’re also going to be offering a way to shortcut the level requirements of some accessories and colors through an in-game currency that you only purchase with real money called, appropriately, KI Gold. So if you really want color 6, but don't want to wait to level up to get it, you can buy KI Gold and spend it on the color instead of leveling up and getting it for free. For those that don’t buy the S2 ultra edition, KI gold is the new way you’ll also buy the premium accessories if you choose to do so - you don't buy them directly any longer.

    Note that you get a much better deal buying the Ultra Edition than you do buying the accessories individually, just like last season.

    And since we believe that there should be badges of honor that you absolutely must earn, things such as color 9 are ONLY available through leveling.

    KI soundtracks

    The delay in launching the soundtracks was over the offers – we have two albums and a double set, and we didn’t want anyone to buy one individually and then realize there was a double album with a discounted price. We decided to remove the singular albums for now and feature one two-disc 25 track version that features remastered versions of all the Killer Cuts tracks (they sound amazing!), plus all the KI Season 1 music in one package (also amazing!).

    THE DIGITAL 2-ALBUM SET WILL BE AVAILABLE ON TUESDAY OCTOBER 14th. We’ll have more information on the outlets soon.

    The Season 2 launch trailer

    Shortly before Season 2 starts on October 15th, we will release a launch trailer. The trailer features TJ’s track (it’s… really, really good) and gives you a very clear picture of which of the remaining original characters are returning this season, plus drive speculation on the new ones as well!

    Is Bayliss fixing/updating/changing/etc. any S1 costumes?

    No. Kev is busy with the S2 alternate costumes. I wouldn’t call them retro exactly, but they certainly reflect Kev’s signature style.

    Hello everyone, and welcome to the textual stream for October 3rd… 12 DAYS FROM S2 LAUNCH!

    This week we’re focusing on UI and fight titles and how things are changing in S2.

    Fight Challenges (Titles)

    As we talked about last week, the new progression system that launches with Season 2 allows you to earn all character unlocks regardless of how you like to play KI. Fight Challenges (formerly known as titles) now contribute XP to your character and player levels every time you earn one.

    Here’s some of the highlights of the new fight challenges system:

    *All Fight Challenges now earn you XP every time you complete a rank in one.
    *Fight Challenges such as special moves and aerial attacks now progress by executing them, not only when they successfully connect. Numbers required on the challenges have been adjusted to take this into account.
    *Character-specific Fight Challenges like combo breakers award XP that goes both to your individual character level and your overall player level.
    *General Fight Challenges like total matches played award XP to your player level only.
    *The total XP you can earn from completing all of a character’s Fight Challenges alone will net you over 50% of the XP to reach a character’s maximum level!

    So now the one bummer in all of this – we have to reset the levels of all S1 Fight Titles and Trials. However, the things you have already earned in S1 will NOT be reset. This includes Concept Art, Player Taunts, Skins, and Profile Icons. When you boot up S2, you will automatically be awarded the S2 Trials and Fight Challenges that are associated with those items, which means you will immediately be awarded the items plus XP for your player level and character levels for any of these you’ve already done. This is why we want everyone to spend their KP NOW.

    We want everyone to be able to get to max level with every character, and one way we’re doing that is by adjusting the numbers on some of the Fight Challenges that were rather… epic… last season. For example the final (10th tier) old Fight Tile for a character’s Ultra required performing 3000 Ultras. That’s well over 30 hours of actual in-game time. In the new system, the final level of the Ultra Fight Challenge requires 200 Ultras to complete the 10th tier. This is more obtainable while still requiring a dedicated effort to obtain.

    Level unlocks & KI Gold

    I talked about this last week, but I’d like to reiterate that KI Gold is a cash-only currency that allows you to skip getting to a level to unlock an accessory or skin. You in no way have to use KI gold to get anything, except the alternate costumes and premium accessory sets you don’t already own.

    You’ll notice in the image below that there’s room for a lot more content for Jago… expect a bunch to be filled in over the course of the season!

    Recently, there’s been a lot of non-constructive posts on the forums that are attacking the game or individuals without engaging in any kind of discussions. We want and respect all of your feedback, but constructive feedback is what we respond best to. Describe the problem; give examples; suggest options; respect your fellow posters, don’t swear at them or attack them personally, and understand they may not share your opinion and that’s completely OK. There is no “us or them” on this forum. We’re all part of the KI community, and we’ll be enforcing that ideal to maintain the site as a place that promotes respectful discussion.

    The Pre-S2 launch Textual Stream!

    Hello everyone, we’re back with a quick textual stream this week, as everyone at IG and MS are getting stuff set up for S2 Launch next week!


    Characters:

    We’re hard at work on characters 3, 4, 5, and 6 at the moment, all in various stages of design and art, plus the unique new coding that each one requires.

    Character #3 has two clear mastery levels. Basic attacks are simple to learn and will be understood rapidly, but once you strive to push the boundaries, expect to be extremely challenged. This is not a character that embraces “easy to master”.


    Fixes & balancing:

    In addition to adding new content, we’re addressing bugs and will release patch notes right before each update. Y’all have been great at finding bugs and inconsistencies and reporting them. THANK YOU! We will certainly address them as we move through the season – I can’t promise we got them all for this month’s release, but we will continue to fix issues as we go.

    When it comes to balancing (not just outright bug fixes), we’re going to be moving intentionally slower on changes. We want the players to have a bit more time with the current systems before we make any sweeping changes. Please continue to provide your feedback, and know that while we don’t respond to a majority of the threads, we are listening and reading.

    TJ Combo and Maya full themes

    RKosmik has released the two themes on his youtube channel. He records all the music clips in game and then edits them together to get the full tune. He has done this for every theme when Season 1 was releasing characters.

    Booted this up after the update, and I have to say it looks very fresh and polished - almost like a new game.

    Will probably just get the 16.99 upgrade again to unlock the characters. Not pushed about accessories.

    Am liking the Orchid changes.
