Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

You don't have to zoom in that far ... 500m on the scale down in the bottom right corner. It's not that difficult.

Like I said, you need to know the location you're zooming towards and then of course its not that difficult

I would suggest you go eat a Snickers you diva, but I empathise with you seeing as there is no MSA in which you can purchase said Snickers.
Your not you when you're hungry .....

I might add that the service area near junction 3 has no outdoor seating - bit of a drag if you want a fag on a fine day :(

J1 is the split, J2 was never built.

Junction 2 is reserved for that faraway day when you can turn left joining the M7 from the south.

Doubtless that will cost a multiple of what it would have if it was included in the original J1 in the first place.

I dont like our numbering of motorway/motorway intersections. In France for example they are signed as intersections and exits are numbered.

That way the same intersection can't have different numbers depending on the direction of approach.

I hate the way in which radial terminals are numbered as 1 - that IMO is stupid. For example, the M50/N4 interchange should be just M50 Jct 7 with N4 Jct 1 being the Liffey Valley Interchange. That to me would make far more sense.

That's a practice we copied from the UK. But if the Red Cow was just J7 - what would Newlands Cross be now?

    Junction 0.5?

On the M11 heading North you are told the turn-off for the M50 is J17 and Exit 17....bit of a surprise as you've just passed Exit 5!

Works if you consider that the eastern bypass would be M50, so

    M11 J1 = Sandyford
    M11 J2 = Carrickmines
    M11 J3 = Wyatville etc
    M11 J4 = M50/current M11 spur (as currently)
    M11 J5 = Bray North
    etc

Apparently applegreen/tedcastles are challenging topaz over who will operate the petrol station. They must be very brave guys to challenge one of Big Denis's operations given his litigiousness nature.

    That's October 13th
How the hell can a judicial hearing/review take so bloody long?
Three months later and not a word on the three MSA's in question

Any update on the online station between Athlone and Moate? Haven't seen any activity there since October.
The offline station at J16 Kiltullagh looks set to open next month. Texaco fuel rather than Topaz.

Moate/Athlone MSA is briefly mentioned here aswell. Three MSA's in limbo because of the judicial review/courts
    Kilcullen being the third one

In Poland the road authority only builds parking lots and slip roads, and reserves space for filling station and restaurants.
Then it looks for companies which build proper services.

Sometimes they can't find company which would like to build services but we have our Polish solutions :pac:

Why must they stay behind a fence?

The road authority didn't give the permission to set up on the road agency property. So, they set up the bar on the private property just outside the road authority jurisdiction.
Motorways, expressways and parking areas along them are fenced in Poland to stop the wildlife.

there was a case of this happening in Germany too somewhere in the east.

spoilsport officials have tried to ban it but they struggle on. Worse still, its the oldest motorway service station (built in the 1920s, opened as a motorway station on 20. December 1936), but it was fenced off in 2004 after a widening of the motorway.

I was digging into the Rathimorissy services idea and found this thing:

    Rathmorissy services 3 proposed sites
    by Geogregor*, on Flickr

It seems that building services at the junction is still an option. Is that true?

Let's say yes. How they can make it accessible from the roundabout while they have designated left turning slips:

    Rathmorissy Junnction services proposal

I guess the only option would be underpass or overpass over that slip road.

The images are in the PDF rom Galway County Council website:

No point in building a service area there without the GCOB. It's far too close to the city, and secondly the M18 service station under construction and the almost open station at J16 on the M6.

Also tacking it on to Rathmorrissey would be ridiculous as it would stifle opportunities for expanding the junction if it ever becomes over-capacity

The existance of existing service area's has not stopped the tii from building their own ones with our money.

The M1 Lusk service area is 2km from the existing applegreen at J5

The new unopened area between Moate and Athlone is only a few km from Athlone, with Kilmartins, and the Applegreen @ B&Q

There is now to be a service area between Pat Mcdonaghs one and Galway on the M6

Is there any TII one on the M8 at all?

There has been some duplication and waste by TII/NRA, but in general, theseareas are directly accessible from the motorways and have great facilities, and stop rat-run and wasted driving time going into towns to find services.

anyone know of any progress on the M11 at South Gorey, I thought the case was to be fas-ttracked in the commercial court, presumably this case is now holding up the other two stations associated with it

Was Applegreen Balbriggan off J5 not built after the NRA MSA ones ?

    Nope.
the IT says the nra msa opened in Sept2010
    http://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/motors/out-of-services-1.651168

the Applegreen on the r132 was open in 2008

    Sabre roads confirms this

If I were the TII I would be more concerned with getting the already built service stations open than opening more on empty motorways. The level of traffic on the M18 at night is tiny, and the M3 is a commuter motorway, which may not need services as bad as other motorways.

Because a poorly designed motorway junction would be better served with a service area to make it worse

I'm sure they could design it for minimal impact on traffic flow, especially given that traffic volumes won't reach design peak for a decade anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,036 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

Ah here, this trench 4 is a joke. I would be surprised if anyone would even agree to build and operate these without an income guarantee, such is the level of traffic on these roads. The one on the M6 might be viable if it served both the M6 and M17/18, otherwise it is too close to Galway for it to be worth stopping. The same can be said about M3, no point in stopping after Dunshaughlin and a service station is being built around Mulhuddart after the motorway ends. You could also argue that these will make the roads less safe, there are enough junctions on them without squeezing in another.

    STILL no official M8 one.

Listening to 2fm and Today fm nearly all day this week and one of the most prominent ads on then stations are one for Topaz/Supermac's Ballacolla J3

Obviously aren't doing as well as predicted or as they'd like

    STILL no official M8 one.

Or an official M7 one. Which we could do with seeing as how busy the one at J14 always is.
