Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Just bought a '05 Golf and looking to upgrade the RCD300 in it to an RNS510.

Canyone purchased one recently that can recommend some sellers on eBay? Will also look to have FISCON bluetooth installed too, but probabably at a later date.

If you can wait until January my new car will be coming and I will be selling my one which is tye P version.

How did you get it to show you the SW and maps versions?

power-off, power on while holding setup, it will first show radio fm/am test, keep holding and you get the full setup menu. :)

V11 maps need seperated partitions as the map is huge and I don't think it will work on yours.
    Firmware update will be necessary.

What is the revision number of your head unit? Is yours LCD or LED unit? ( The last letter of the part number? )

You could update to modified 4120 and you will get separated partitions, and loads of other features. Further updates will not be necessary.

Ive the 2 of these on my wish lists:
    http://www.aliexpress.com/item/VAG-K-CAN-Commander-Full-1-4-obd2-Diagnostic-Scanner-COM-for-VW-forAudi-Skoda-Seat/1722787586.html

    http://www.ebay.ie/itm/121407681190?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

The "UK" one says its in the UK, but the seller is in Aus (though the postage specifically excludes Australia).

I don't want to be going off topic but neither of those cables are any good. I can lend you mine anytime if you want allthough it likes XP or Win 7..

Yeah, the partition thing has me concerned, this is what's making me think I need a FW update.

    The head unit is 1T0035680C, HW41, SW2760. 30G HDD

The irony of it all. Driving back from Kilkenny, Sat nav running, and all of a sudden blank screen. Can't boot it up, can't reset it either. It's getting power (black screen is "lit"), but not getting a boot sequence.

Initial googling tells me it might be bricked.

    Sorry to hear that BK.

Have you tried powering up while holding the setup button? If that works there's a factory reset option in the menu.

In other news, I updated the maps in mine to 8117 / 2014 V11, took about 40 mins to load and save to the HDD but no issues. Went for a spin and it now has roads where it didn't before.. win :)

    Great to hear Steve.

If you were looking for firmware, I got mine from this site:
    http://www.rnsfirmware.com

Its modified version by some guys in OZ. Works perfect, tons of new features plus Video in Motion. ( not for you, but passengers;))

Still dead this morning. Time to scower Dublin for a good-willed VCDS owner, and after that tells me the head unit is dead, time to start saving for a new one. :(

Where are you based, I can have a look at it for you?

Don't panic, the unit will not brick itself without some sort of interference.

Quite possible that the display went, which can be replaced for reasonable monies.

Other then that I suggest pulling the radio fuse out for at least 15min ( located in the engine bay, First fuse on the right just above the relays starting from the bottom. 15amp) and see how that goes.

Hi guys. I'm on the trail for a satnav from a 2012 Octavia that was recently crashed. If the insurance write it off and I buy it what do I do for a aerial? Do I try and get the fancy looking roof aerial thats on the car or will I have to buy an under dash aerial?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,865 ✭✭✭✭MuppetCheck

Get a generic one on eBay and plug it in the back. You can pop the air vents on top of the dash and stick it as high up in there as you can.

I did this and never had an issue with getting a GPS fix. If the nav is the Amunsden I wouldn't bother though. It's not a patch on the Colombus and unless you are getting it ridiculously cheap the better unit is worth forking out for.

Yeah. Generic aerial on ebay. Usually about €15-20. I couldnt get mine up near the vents (VW CC) but my child like hands could reach in behind the radio housing and I found a metal pipe. The magnet on the GPS antenna holds it and I get signal straight away.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,585 ✭✭✭jca

Thanks for the replies guys. If I'm lucky and it's the columbus will I need a separate bluetooth module? I haven't seen the car yet it's awaiting assessment but by all accounts it's a gonner.

  • Moderators Posts: 12,385 ✭✭✭✭Black_Knight

I would assume so. Im not too familiar with the Columbus model, but I assume they're all more or less the same. The BT module is usually separate. Its housed under the drivers seat as far as im aware. About €300 I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,309 ✭✭✭Harcrid

Yes you need a separate Bluetooth module with the Columbus. They can be got for around the 150 - 200 euro mark.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,865 ✭✭✭✭MuppetCheck

Has the car already got Bluetooth? If so the Colombus is plug and play. Mine only had the basic swing radio with Bluetooth and there was no issues and it worked immediately.

    Damn VWs are pricier.

Im guessing one of these off carsystems.pl would do the trick for the Columbus.

No it has the basic swing radio without bluetooth. This is fast becoming an expensive exercise..... Thinking about sticking with my bluetooth earpiece tbh.

I got an RNS510 once (actually twice, first one died last month). I now have a reversing camera. Love it!

It's worth it, God knows they're miserable enough places to be without something interesting to play with! You can add the Bluetooth at a later stage if you want. You'll also need a new dash trim for it to fit. That's about 50 quid from a dealer.

  • Registered Users Posts: 232 ✭✭clancger

Mine was stolen for the 2nd time in 5 months last Tue night. They went in the passenger window.
Other the my wooly hat + leather gloves, nothing else taken.
In the meantime it's been recovered by guards, and I'm picking up on Monday.
Not sure if the guards caught the guys concerned, all I was told was it's the result of a car search in Slane Tuesday night.
Anyone that's being blinded by the great "deals" on Adverts, Ebay etc must first be clear that they are generating a market for stolen goods as these are being stolen to order.
If you're not bothered by that, then please do post here when it's your turn to be robbed.

Mine isn't that austere in fairness as it has the cream half leather interior with the fake wood trim certainly much nicer than the drab grey of the standard cars. I don't think I'll go ahead with it as it's going to be a lot more expensive than I thought especially with the bluetooth being an added expense. The threat of it being stolen doesn't help either.

Canbus is above the pedals on the GTI, not sure if it's the same for other Golf models.

There's a few videos on YouTube showing how to replace it

Hi, not sure the Chinese clone would use a Can protocol tho?? ( is a clone or just a chinese variant?)

If the unit is not powering off, you can swap the ignition terminals on the block connector going into back of the radio.
    Hope that helps

After much deliberation I've decided against upgrading. It's really not worth the hassle. With my phone holder and Google maps ill use that method the rare time I need directions.

In the same boat, would be nice to have but they seem to invite trouble and are crazy money for what they offer.

It wouldn't be too bad if it was an all in one unit but to have to pay a lot extra for bluetooth is a choker.

Id like to add BT to mine to complete it, but id rarely use it to be honest, so the expense doesnt make sense. RNS 510 (x2) and an OEM reversing camera is quite enough expense.

Car came with a parrott BT kit when I got it. Its ok.

Anyone ever had problems with the CD Changer? Have a 08 Passat and it doesnt read/swallows the CDs. I want to put in a new radio/sat nav into the Car but want to get this fixed first so it won't start a knock on of problems once ive the new system installed.

I'm looking at getting one through a car forum member, it's an RNS-510 version C though, this is quite an old unit I think, probably not worth the 500 euro asking price, what do people think? I assume I should keep looking for a newer model

You are better of going for a newer rns510's from E onwards as they are LED. Much better resolution, better hard drive partitions and capable of latest SW updates. You can not do that with older LCD versions.

Bought an rns 510 and ace fitted it to my 11 reg caddy. Unit was manufactured October 2012. Basically I've only a single antennae plug in caddy but unit has a sort of twin plug. Antennae still plugs in but reception not great at times! Any adaptor or remedy?!

You need an adaptor and a GPS antenna. The other plug is for Gps.
You can put the gps antenna just behind the radio underneath the dash
