I'd nearly say that the new card is worse than the old one in some ways. A low end card would most likely have a 64-bit memory bus whereas the 76xx NVIDIAs have a 128-bit bus. The rating would also depend on the type of video RAM on the card (DDR2 vs GDDR3 for example).

Proof in point, my laptop scores 6.4 on the WEI, it's a 512MB GeForce 9600M GT. My cousin has a 1GB 9600M GT but his card gets a much lower score. The reason for the discrepancy is the video RAM type, mine has GDDR3 while his is DDR2.

    Just finished upgrading.

I've scored 7.9 for graphics , 7.3 for CPU and 7.5 for Ram.

    I'll upload the screenshot later.

    ASUS 6970 2GB BTW.

Unfortunately that was after messing about with overclocking settings a bit... Temps went up to the early 70s:o
Next purchase is definitely going to be a decent cooler and an SSD:p

not too dissapointed tbh considering it was a budget build. i did get lucky with the processor though, it unlocked to a phenom 2 X4 with the juicy L3 cache.

also, there's an SSD in the pipeline somewhere.

    cant wait to see flaccus's.

just a bit of tweaking, mild OC on the GPU and whatnot, thought id give an update :)

Don't mean to burst your bubble, but I was of the opinion that OC'ing does SFA to WEI and upon seeing this, my opinion hasn't changed. Dedicated graphics memory hasn't changed yet it's score went from 7.3 to 7.5. Accordingly, I would suggest that the score for the graphics card went up due to a (possible) update from microsoft to whatever it is that determines these scores.

Of course you can prove me wrong by undercloking your card and see what happens.

well i havent done any windows updates in a while, so i dont know when MS got the opportunity to update their WIE.

and you're very wrong about the OCing anyway.

ive just done a little bit of OCing on my CPU (from 2.9ghz to 3.35ghz and its gone up from 7.3 to 7.4. i had it @ 7.5 with the OC @ 3.45ghz but the system was unstable, so when i cut back i reran the test and its at the 7.4 again.
my SSD is showing as 7.3 instead of 7.7 now :( but that i suspect is because of intel's aggressive TRIM commands, causing the first few seconds of read performance to fall below 200mbps (which is when WIE does its tests.) before being at a smooth constant rate.

Why in the hell would dedicated graphics memory change with OCing? It's not like you can just will more RAM into existance.

Yes, it should have stayed at 7.3.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

Yes, it should have stayed at 7.3.

That's assuming that the WEI is a stable, reliable and trustworthy benchmark which will return the same results twice in a row... It isn't!

Just look at my results from page 5 and 7 if you want further proof! (before and after an OC which had nothing to do with the GFX card)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

So you're saying the score should have stayed the same, with or without an OC... right...

    My point exactly.

My score. Standard sata Hard drive as you can see from score. Might upgrade to SSD but then again i dont really see the point. Graphics card isn't the best but it does me as i don't game on this machine, i use my xbox 360 for that.

    Score-1.jpg

Below my 4 or 5 year old laptop could be even older when ever Dell inspiron 640m came out i got it then. Can any body tell me why my hard drive scored so bad. I upgraded the CPU and put the max amount of RAM this machine can hold. If only you could install a graphics card.

odd that the CPU info doesn't show the OC for some reason (@4Ghz). :(

made a bad choice on an 8gb ram upgrade, but i'll be fixing that come payday. :)

    What was the bad choice?

    What was the bad choice?
    two pairs of these. :(

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-177-OC&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1516

they will barely run at all at the stock detected motherboard settings, so i got onto their forums and was told to mess around with the timings to fix it, but although initially it seemed better and i could boot normally, it didn't help in the end once i started stressing the system.

i did some memtests on them and one of the DIMM's was throwing up a shedload of errors, so i got an RMA from OCZ and they sent me back replacements and one of them kept throwing up errors in memtest too, so i've given up and am sending both kits back for a refund.

any recommendations for an 8gb kit (2x 4's or 4x 2's) of DDR3 10666 RAM that would work well with a bit of an overclock on my i5 750 in an MSI P55M GD45 mobo?

Yeah OCZ failed pretty hard with their DDR3 RAM. I think they had a 10-12% chance of failure per module!

This is a great bargain atm, 8GB for €47 shipped:

So true OCZ are pretty much killing all of the RAM stuff. Focusing more on the SSD market.

G.skill are the brand to now follow in RAM. Pretty aggressively speed rated memory on offer. Better brand to follow.

ha thought this would be fun...

this is the laptop i use to watch pron when not on my phone or PC.

running windows 7 (just!) because the wireless card no longer likes XP even after hours of trying to fix it. works fine in W7 on windows generic drivers :eek: but installing its proper drivers crashes it again.

trade off was that the GPU (POS ATI 128mb something or other) isnt supported in W7 and also has to run off the generic vga drivers, making it slow and glitchy in anything half intensive (hates flash). youtube is fine though..

depressing when the highest score goes to a PATA 40gb HDD...

still though, got it for free and all that.:)

O.O Even my netbook does better than that. Would you get a better score if you installed directX?
