A new opinion poll shows Sinn Féin is now the most popular political party in the country.

The Millward Brown poll for the Sunday Independent shows they have increased their support, excluding "don't knows", to 26%.

Fine Gael stands at 22%, Fianna Fáil 20%, Labour is at 7% and Independents and Others at 23%.

The poll was carried out over the past 10 days with nearly 1,000 people interviewed.

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2014/1101/656305-poll-politics/

What happened to the 'irreparable damage' that so many people were claiming to have been done to the party over the last 2 weeks?

    Mod warnings:

Cut out the digs at moderation thank you.
This thread will not be going down the road of the last one, fair warning for everybody.

This thread is not to become a reprise of the "level in the polls" thread. That means it does not become another Mairia Cahill thread (or another McConville thread) - and that means I'm looking at alastair specifically.

We all know what issues might have impacted support for SF in recent weeks, and their truth or falsity is not to be thrashed out yet again here. Please report posts that will drag the thread into such a discussion.

Strictly, with respect to the Cahill affair, those who refuse to accept the validity of an IRA court must use the phrase "alleged rapist", because from your perspective he has not been tried in a court of law, while those who accept the validity of IRA courts should use the phrase "rapist", because from your perspective he has.

Less humorously, everybody should use the phrase "alleged" because the law of the land - which we go by - doesn't accept the validity of an IRA court.

Dan_Solo, your contributions better be substantive.

Failure to follow this warning will lead to summary banning.

    moderately,
    Scofflaw

Civility reminder. Enough with "I know you are but what am I" playground stuff.

    Excellent.

Must have sickened Denis o Brien's INM to have had to pay for the commissioning of that poll.

No doubt it'll be buried somewhere in tomorrow's rag rather than splashed on the front page like it would be if the results were different

I'd say they're flat out right now pressing Cahill for something new for them to print.

Pause for thought for Enda anyway, anymore transparent political games and it could backfire badly on him.

In fairness to Enda, he's only doing what he's spin doctors tell him.

Think its time he hired new ones.

Some of the predictions in the Mairia Cahill thread are looking incredibly lacking in insightfulness now. Sunday Independent and friends will be absolutely devastated - Sinn Feins inexorable march towards governance and being the number one party continues no matter what the naysayers throw at them.

I've never voted for Sinn Fein but this development is as predictable as it is refreshing - nice to see a real powerhouse emerge on the left but what I like most of all about the latest polls is that the same old political establishment bully-boy tactics ain't working anymore and it should make our politicans take notice that the Irish people won't be brow-beaten, manipulated or blackmailed into voting one way or another. Show us your policies and stop playing the age-old "he said/she said/they said" game of negative campaigning, it doesn't wash anymore and it doesn't detract from the real issues.

As 120,000 people protesting today proved, the Irish electorate feel the election is more about things like water charges rather than an alleged rape that happened in a foreign jurisdiction 20 years ago and who did or didn't know about it - so the lesson should be simply that if you want to politicise something to make sure it is politically relevant or it'll backfire horribly - the electorate don't like being taken for idiots. Regardless of the rights and wrongs of the Mairia Cahill affair it should not have been headline news for 2 weeks; that is not to understate or underplay what happened to her but rather to highlight that the allegations should have been investigated in the right arena - the Irish people have seen through the attempts at cheap political manipulation and thankfully these kind of tactics aren't going to win elections anymore, they're going to lose them and for that I am grateful.

I suspect that SF doing well will hurt FF and Labour much more than it will FG.

    This will silence the nay-sayers.

Expect more glossy sensationalist headlines in the coming weeks, (with twenty year old accusations and allegations) and expect the same spectacular political backfiring they will achieve.

Enda and co must be terrified.

Good result for Sinn Fein but they better get that magic money tree fired up and generating the funny money before 2016.

    No need.

The privatisation of IW plan seems to be gaining them considerable traction.

    It ain't a claim Banjo.

As a loyal footsoldier I'm sure you read the SF pre-budget statement also?

Hardly needs saying! It would be a pretty confused voter who would switch from FG to SF, or vice versa.

'Good result' it is a stupendous result for them and signs that the Irish people recognise political football when they see it.
I feel sorry for Mairia Cahill, she has been used politically and to no great end. Time the people concerned for her to advise her to get out of the media circus and pursue this where it always should have been pursued, the Courts.

I missed the part that said they were going to privatize it.

The McConville mud throwing didn't work.

The Blueshirt Branes Trust: "OK lads, we weren't really trying with the McConville stroke. She was probably a grass anyway. No more messing. Paedophilia, that's your man......."

FG drop like a stone in polls.......

What next? Gerry Adams was a cannibal?

If stuff keeps going over your head like this you might consider a career as a limbo dancer!

Funding should be generated through mixed income of which the majority is through public subsidy from the Government, in addition to non-domestic charges, commercial borrowing and equity investment.

We never got to know how much of a privatisation, or to whom they intend to sell to.

But as SF themselves say, under the Shinners, IW is staying & moreover it will part privatised.

So they haven't said it will be privatised.

    That's grand so.

No, just part-privatised, and to what extent we don't know.
(Not sure if that's okey-dokey for SF supporters though?)

The main thing is that the troops know what the generals are up to.

We'll see if/when they flip-flop on the IW share issue.

Labour at 7% thought it would be lower, they are going the way of the dodo, FG will follow unless they sort out the IW debacle.

Now that you mention it, there was a story in a German newspaper about a bearded Irishman in a Berlin bar.........

Considering how FF had to backtrack on some of its promises when it got into power, I wonder how SF will bankroll on all its promises?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,587 ✭✭✭Pocoyo

Non profit government factories that pay the living wage covering costs by producing goods or services.

Labour are approaching margin of error territory - they will be defunct soon.

Labour has an inglorious history in Irish government but were kept alive largely by a Civil and Public Service vote. Howlin has managed to destroy that loyalty. They're facing extinction and they will not be missed. James Connelly wouldn't have touched the likes of Joan Burton with a barge-pole.

Only the women in them didn't get paid anything!

I reckon he's sleeping easy. SF are still toxic on the transfer front, so the real scope for them making inroads come next election will be constrained by that fact. Mairia Cahill will most certainly have damaged them.

No more like the socialist model on a small scale to eradicate unemployment and boost the economy.
