also euro discount or euro price store opening soon in the commercial centre out by kfc in killeens .... situated right beside DID electrical ....

also found out the other day that a new supermarket is being opened in the westpoint business park... there is signs up there displaying new supermarket opening here soon .... anybody got any info on that ??

I think the old dunnes is big enough with the upstairs and downstairs to house a few units. Similar to shaws with topman, dorothy perkins etc

Even a fancy bistro on the ground floor or top?

The upstairs is in really bad condition the floor and roof are severly damaged no one will rent the old Dunnes with these issues. Dunnes had planned to gut the building and rebuild it in 2006 but changed there mind and decided to close it though it took a few years before it closed.

new hairdressers "brash" opened up by subway... looks like the shop beside it is getting ready to house someone new as well ...

also seen work ongoing in the old 3g mobile store in the middle of the main street .... so somthing new to go in there as well ....

thats all the goss for now... looks like business is picking up big time... lots of new shops opening.

I'm actually not too sure if they are going to be running it or not now. The news changes daily. lol

Apparently they are just renting half the store...:o

cost right sofa's or somthing similar opened in the industrial estate by joyces...used to be furniture depot.... and also a new grocery shop back open on the corner of georges street lower... by whites ! used to be a little sweet shops years ago.. and i happily see it back now as a small corner greengrocers!

i see the new and refurbished Mooneys back on the quay! very clever move by the new owners... will certainly bring nostaliga and a clever marketing ploy by them .... i presume itll be a late bar?? or does anybody have any info ??? woudlnt think theyll have it as a nightclub and charge in ?

anybody any more news on upcoming wexford progression???

I've been looking for a retail unit on the main street for a while to open a small speciality shop but the rents are crazy. Looks like only large multi-nationals can afford to set up shop in Wexford!! Not much chance for locals who want to make a go of it :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 180 ✭✭doleman2010

Have to agree with you ELIZA 1 , the main street in wexford will look like any high street in the uk soon eneough.
All this does is just soak money out of the local economy, ok they employ people on the minimum wage and a manager gets MW +20%. they do nothing to support other local business , IE stock , shopfitting and supplies.
Still must be plenty of well heeled mugs left to support them in their quest to drain our economy with their over inflated prices compared to the uk.

Was in a branch of Fatface recently-Pennies quality clothing at Arnotts prices, not what Wexford needs really. That discount store at Byrnes is up and running, the way the economy is gone thats all that will be any real success.:(
Even so,at least Wexford town is getting a few new stores, try shopping in Enniscorthy-won't take you long to be jumping in the car and heading elsewhere.

  • Registered Users Posts: 293 ✭✭WexfordWarrior

eliza thats a pity not being able to afford the rent... i know prices are meant to be crazy rent wise and its a pity some spaces are left unused because of this reason... you'd think some rent money would be better than none but thats the way this crazy country has gone i suppose....

new shops open in selskar with ALIEN 8 ... a book store with an eye for specialty comic's from DC Marvel etc etc... surprising to see but excellent at the same time... nice speciality comic's ....

also red square pizza now open the bottom of rowe street beside that coffee shop on the corner...

New toy shop open south main street .... forget the name.... new shop going into where the Silk connection was beside argos and a shoe repair /key cutting/ art exibition coffee house opening beside chocolate bar with split level so i seen ....

nice to see the garden area of the stores back again too...looked absolutely aweful when it was a derelict site for a while during that debacle.

    any more shops opening ?

Where is this new toy shop ?

Bridges never had music or anything like that and that did no harm to there business. Heck the only harm Bridges did was to childrens necks from looking at the ceiling.

Its between Coleman Doyles and Barkers - on same side. Shop is laid out well but badly needs some background music (nothing noisy). TV screen in window would really catch the kids eyes.....just my opinion..

new womans boutique on the main street inbetween dv8 and barkers ..accross from pennys ...forget the name... Emobile also opene on the main street and "the blinds boutique" opened on the corner of cinema lane formerly "lulu's" ...

new barbers beside pettits in town in the old l&n carpark.... and new unnamed shop beisde diva salon in the same area ...shops accross from the bean and berry selling womens accessories of some sort !

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 341 ✭✭Mocrie14

That new toy shop down near Heatons seems to have closed up already. Anyone known the story?
I thought it would do well but it did'nt feel like a toy shop - no music playing, no kids videos playing in shop etc. Silence in shop was actually off putting

I think there was one there last year and the year before maybe not the exact same location but they were on south main street. They only seem too open up just before christmas and then there gone, probably discount type stores maybe?

There's a great furniture restoration shop in The Forge, Baldwinstown near Kilmore Quay. I got 2 chairs restored there recently and they're fantastic, very reasonable too. They have alot of old furniture and antiques. Love love love those kind of shops!!!:D

Not the best location where they are - they might have done better around near Woodies/Hickeys etc.

Just seen the headline, but will find out for you..think i still have the paper at home...

i was in the new mooneys nightclub and to be hoenst its springsteens with a few disco lights.... very disappointing...it still has the feel of an american roadhouse and the opening night was just full of farmers basically... people in baseball caps and the sort.... we had a look in the new mooneys bar area just before and nobody in there.... band playing to themselves.

shocking. this was onthe friday night though... dont think they dont much advertising about it....

ive been aorund town a good bit the last few months and the pubs are dying a death.... friday nghts have gone completely i think except for the few usual strongholds.... maggie mays, sky and the ground, mackens and an ok crowd in T Morris..and stores of course... but pubs whwre there usually was a bit of a crowd seem to be empty.... only night now really is saturday night but i dont go out saturday nights much these days but know peoplre who do and they say its always packed....

i guess people are just saving money now...drinking at home... going out late, and doing it once a week now instead of 3 or 4 times like it was ....

recession has hit wexford hard alright... shops closing down... blue mountain gone etc.... needs investment badly now.....

wonder how that court proceedings is going regarding right of way in the old tesco site and when that will finally come to a head !!

dunnes are mad to move out of redmond square but is there any builder willing to even do a small scale shopping centre in this town.... the only town in Ireland without one id say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,283 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

Disagree re Mooneys, its very similar to the way it used to be and the new upstairs bar part is cool.

  • Registered Users Posts: 293 ✭✭WexfordWarrior

i like the upstairs bar part in mooneys and the place has potential definately but they havnt done anything with it since it was springsteens... its the very same with some lights down the back.... zero vision !

place could be a great little small club if done right.... and in my humbled opinion...it isnt done at all ! what was it like when you were in there??? friday or saturday night ??? and was there a crowd???

also why doesnt someone open late in wexford on Tuesday night... chocolate have monday and wednesday ... stoes the other nights... but tuesday is just a no goer... if you had free entrance into the club and late opening i think there is potential to draw a crowd....

the emergence of CARLOW i.t in the town means there students waiting to get drunk .... someone should exploit that and also give us regular punters somewhere to go on tuesday as well or at least have the option ! :)

Dunnes is moving out of there?

Hmmm the shopping centre idea is a tough one, its been branded around for a while eg. Trinity Wharf. But we have a really unique Main street I think a shopping centre would absolutely kill it. There are three problems for shop owners on the main street. 1. Rents. (they have not fallen). 2. Rates. (the CC do nothing to help people with high rate bills). 3. Parking. too expensive and the best carpark is at the most southern south of the town, meaning Selskar/north main street suffers. Both Dunnes carparks are always nearly over crowded.

I agree a shopping centre would kill the main street. Just because everywhere else in the world has shopping centres doesnt mean Wexford has to. Every town in Ireland is already starting to look like every town in the UK.

I would like to see someone building some sort of roof on the main st :pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 293 ✭✭WexfordWarrior

ok well the shopping centre thing is a "whatever" for me at this stage but the rates and rents thing especially being "only upward" is ridiculous... half the reason so many places have closed down... its a different climate now and whoever came up with this idea of "upwards only rent" ... absolute scandal!

  • Registered Users Posts: 59 ✭✭Eliza1

I think upward only rents are now illegal for new leases? Although I guess there are many locked into long term leases still with this clause. I didn't realise Dunnes were moving out of Redmond Sq - where are they going to??

The Main Street is better than any shopping centre as for Trinity Warf it was never going to happen there was too many problems with it to build it, Rents won't fall to many differant owners, People do park in Tesco and shop on the town which is something Tesco don't like and will probably do something about that soon and there is ony one Dunnes carpark in Redmond Sq the Keyser Lane's carpark has nothing to do with Dunnes Stores.

Parking has become a large problem for people the feel that they have a human right to a parking space

The Pub trade has been declining since the 80's through various changes so its nothing to do with the recession a ban on cheap alcohol prices in supermarkets would help this area. Shops allways close up in the new year window between feb and april its the worst time for most retail, easter going into summer begins to pick up with christmas been the peak time thats why so many places open between september and december.

Dunnes are not moving so I don't know why you make this remark if it wasn't for those B'N'B's Dunnes would have built a massive retail store with more parking spaces and all that jazz.

Yes no exact date was given though a couple of weeks ago they said 6 weeks so a month perhaps. The reason they gave for the closure was a poor trade in december due to the snow but realistically I would put the closure down to poor location outside the town centre and the decline in the toy trade over the past few years children tend to want the newest phone, ipod, and laptop etc etc around Christmas not toys.

That's been on the cards for a long time as they are exiting the main toy trade and putting more work into their books, stationery & newsagent business.

I don't think it was any surprise to the staff.
